A measurement of the spin asymmetry and determination of the structure function g(1) in deep inelastic muon proton scattering.

The spin asymmetry in deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarised muons by longitudinally polarised protons has been measured over a large x range (0.01< x <0.7). The spin-dependent structure function g 1 ( x ) for the proton has been determined and its integral over x found to be 0.114±0.012±0.026, in disagreement with the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule. Assuming the validity of the Bjorken sum rule, this result implies a significant negative value for the integral of g 1 for the neutron. These values for the integrals of g 1 lead to the conclusion that the total quark spin constitutes a rather small fraction of the spin of the nucleon.

Cross sections have been measured for the reactions p¯p→π+π− and K+K− at 15 incident-beam momenta between 360 and 760 MeV/c with significantly better statistics than previous experiments in this momentum region. No significant structure has been found in either channel. The values of 90%-confidence-level upper limits for the possible resonance cross sections are given.

Search for Narrow Peaks in Inclusive $\pi^0$ Spectra From $\bar{p} p$ Annihilation at Rest

By using modularized NaI(Tl) detectors, we carried out a high statistics measurement of inclusive π 0 spectra from p p annihilation at rest. We did not observe any narrow π 0 peaks arising from baryonium production, p p →π 0 B . The σ upper limit of the yield varied between 10 −2 and 10 −4 depending on the mass and oncharge multiplicity. Three narrow peaks at 2 σ levels were seen at approximately the same masses as in the previous measurement of p p → γ B .We also derived the yield of p p annihilation into π 0 M for M = ø , η ′, ω , ϱ 0 , η and π 0 .

Exclusive $\rho^0$ and $\phi$ Production in Deep Inelastic Muon Scattering

Data are presented on exclusive ρ0 and ϕ production in deep inelastic muon scattering from a target consisting mainly of nitrogen. The ratio of the total cross sections for ρ0 and ϕ production is found to be 9∶(1.6±0.4) at 〈Q2〉=7.5 GeV2, consistent with theSU(3) prediction of 9∶2. Thet dependence for exclusive ρ0 production is found to become shallover asQ2 increases and, for largeQ2, thet dependence is typical of that for a hard scattering process. Furthermore, the ratio of the cross sections for coherent: incoherent production from nitrogen is found to decrease rapidly withQ2. Such behaviour indicates that even for exclusive vector meson production the virtual photon behaves predominantly as an electromagnetic probe.

Measurement and Analysis of the Reaction $\gamma \gamma \to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^-$

We have measured the cross section of four charged pion production in photon-photon interactions in the invariant mass range 1.0≦Wγγ≦3.2 GeV and up toQ2=16 GeV2. For 1.2 GeV≦Wγγ≦1.7 GeV the process is dominated by ρ0ρ0 production with a rapid rise in cross section around 1.2 GeV, well below the nominal ρ0ρ0 threshold. The observed distributions in the two particle masses and in the production and decay angles are well described by an incoherent sum of the phase-space subprocesses γγ →ρ0ρ0, →ρ0π+π−, and →π+π−π+π−. A spin-parity analysis of the ρ0ρ0 system showsJP=2+ to dominate, although 0+ is also possible forWγγ≦1.4 GeV. Negative partity states are excluded.

High Mass Dimuon Production in anti-p n and pi- n Interactions at 125-GeV/c

We have studied muon pairs with an invariant mass between 4 and 9 GeV/c2 produced in p¯N and π−N interactions at an incident momentum of 125 GeV/c. The experiment was performed at Fermilab using a tungsten target and a special beam enriched to contain 18% antiprotons. We compare differential distributions as functions of the dimuon invariant mass, Feynman x, transverse momentum, and decay angles of the dimuon to the predictions of the Drell-Yan model including QCD corrections. Quark structure functions for the p¯ and π− are extracted. Comparisons of the antiproton data to the Drell-Yan model are significant because the cross sections depend principally on the valence-quark structure functions which are accurately determined by deep-inelastic scattering measurements. The measured absolute cross section (integrated over positive Feynman x and all transverse momenta) is 0.106±0.005±0.008 nb/nucleon for the p¯N interaction and 0.107±0.003±0.009 nb/nucleon for the π−N interaction, where the quoted errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. Normalization (K) factors that are required to bring the naive Drell-Yan and first-order QCD predictions into agreement with the measurements are extracted, and the uncertainties involved in such comparisons are examined.

The Nonsinglet Valence Quark Distribution From Neutrino - Deuterium Deep Inelastic Scattering

The deep-inelastic scattering reaction νμN→μ−X has been studied using the deuterium-filled 15-foot bubble chamber at Fermilab. The data have been analyzed under the assumption of isospin invariance to extract x(uV-dV) for the proton, where xuV(x) and xdV(x) are the valence up- and down-quark momentum distributions, respectively. The results are compared with other data and with different theoretical fits. The ratio νn/νp as a function of x is also presented.
