Energy flow and charged particle spectrum in deep inelastic scattering at HERA

Global properties of the hadronic final state in deep inelastic scattering events at HERA are investigated. The data are corrected for detector effects and are compared directly with QCD phenomenology. Energy flows in both the laboratory frame and the hadronic centre of mass system and energy-energy correlations in the laboratory frame are presented. Comparing various QCD models, the colour dipole model provides the only satisfactory description of the data. In the hadronic centre of mass system the momentum components of charged particles longitudinal and transverse to the virtual boson direction are measured and compared with lower energy lepton-nucleon scattering data as well as withe+e− dat from LEP.

Measurement of total and partial photon proton cross-sections at 180-GeV center-of-mass energy

Photon proton cross sections for elastic light vector meson production, σelνp, inelastic diffractive production, σndνp, non-diffractive production, σdνp, as well as the total cross section, σtotνp, have been measured at an average υp center of mass energy of 180 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The resulting values are σelνp = 18 ± 7 μb, σdνp = 33 ± 8 μb, σndνp = 91 ± 11 μb, and σtotνp 143 ± 17 μb, where the errors include statistical and systematic errors added in quadrature.

Inclusive charged particle cross-sections in photoproduction at HERA

Cross sections are presented for the inclusive production of charged particles measured in electron-proton collisions at low Q 2 with the H1 detector at HERA. The transverse momentum distribution extends up to 8 GeV/ c . Its shape is found to be harder than that observed in p p collisions at comparable centre-of-mass energies √S γp ≈ √S p p ≈ 200 GeV , and also harder than in γp collisions at lower energies √ S γp ≈ 18 GeV. Results from quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations agree with the measured transverse momentum and pseudorapidity cross sections.

Observation of gamma gamma ---> phi rho0 and gamma gamma ---> phi omega

Two-photon production of the hadronic final states K + K − π + π − and K + K − π + π 0 π − has been studied using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY. The cross sections of the reactions γγ → øϱ 0 and γγ → øω have been measured for the first time. In addition, angular distrubutions have been determined for the reaction γγ → øϱ 0 → K + K − π + π − .

Evidence for color coherence in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.8-TeV

Color coherence effects in pp¯ collisions are observed and studied with CDF, the Collider Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We demonstrate these effects by measuring spatial correlations between soft and leading jets in multijet events. Variables sensitive to interference are identified by comparing the data to the predictions of various shower Monte Carlo programs that are substantially different with respect to the implementation of coherence.

Two-Photon Production of Charged Pion and Kaon Pairs

A measurement of the cross section for the combined two-photon production of charged pion and kaon pairs is performed using 1.2~$\rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected by the CLEO~II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The cross section is measured at invariant masses of the two-photon system between 1.5 and 5.0 GeV/$c^2$, and at scattering angles more than $53^\circ$ away from the $\gamma\gamma$ collision axis in the $\gamma\gamma$ center-of-mass frame. The large background of leptonic events is suppressed by utilizing the CsI calorimeter in conjunction with the muon chamber system. The reported cross section is compared with leading order QCD models as well as previous experiments. Projectile fission at relativistic velocities: A novel and powerful source of neutron rich isotopes well suited for in-flight isotopic separation

Projectile fission of 238 U was investigated at a bombarding energy of 750 A·MeV using a Pb target. Forward emitted fragments from 80 Zn up to 155 Ce were analyzed with the Fragment Separator (FRS) and unambigously identified by their energy-loss and time-of-flight. The magnetic selection of the largest momenta acted as a trigger of the low-energy fission component. More than forty new nuclear species were identified. The related isotopic production cross-sections are presented.

A Large Solid Angle Study of Pion Absorption on He3

Measurements have been made of pi+ absorption on He3 at T_pi+ = 118, 162, and 239 MeV using the Large Acceptance Detector System (LADS). The nearly 4pi solid angle coverage of this detector minimizes uncertainties associated with extrapolations over unmeasured regions of phase space. The total absorption cross section is reported. In addition, the total cross section is divided into components in which only two or all three nucleons play a significant role in the process. These are the first direct measurements of the total and three nucleon absorption cross sections.

Observation of enhanced subthreshold K+ production in central collisions between heavy nuclei

In the very heavy collision system Au197+197Au the K+ production process was studied as a function of impact parameter at 1 GeV/nucleon, a beam energy well below the free N-N threshold. The K+ multiplicity increases more than linearly with the number of participant nucleons and the K+/π+ ratio rises significantly when going from peripheral to central collisions. The measured K+ double differential cross section is enhanced by a factor of 6 compared to microscopic transport calculations if secondary processes (ΔN→KΛN and ΔΔ→KΛN) are ignored.
