Quark and gluon jets with the same energy, 24 GeV, are compared in symmetric three-jet configurations from hadronic Z decays observed by the ALEPH detector. Jets are defined using the Durham algorithm. Gluon jets are identified using an anti-tag on b jets, based on a track impact parameter method. The comparison of gluon and mixed flavour quark jets shows that gluon jets have a softer fragmentation function, a larger angular width and a higher particle multiplicity, Evidence is presented which shows that the corresponding differences between gluon and b jets are significantly smaller. In a statistically limited comparison the multiplicity in c jets was found to be comparable with that observed for the jets of mixed quark flavour.
B-jets are identified with the lepton-tag analysis.

Previously published and as yet unpublished QCD results obtained with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 are presented. The unprecedented statistics allows detailed studies of both perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of strong interactions to be carried out using hadronic Z and tau decays. The studies presented include precise determinations of the strong coupling constant, tests of its flavour independence, tests of the SU(3) gauge structure of QCD, study of coherence effects, and measurements of single-particle inclusive distributions and two-particle correlations for many identified baryons and mesons.

Distributions are presented of event shape variables, jet roduction rates and charged particle momenta obtained from 53 000 hadronicZ decays. They are compared to the predictions of the QCD+hadronization models JETSET, ARIADNE and HERWIG, and are used to optimize several model parameters. The JETSET and ARIADNE coherent parton shower (PS) models with running αs and string fragmentation yield the best description of the data. The HERWIG parton shower model with cluster fragmentation fits the data less well. The data are in better agreement with JETSET PS than with JETSETO(αS2) matrix elements (ME) even when the renormalization scale is optimized.

Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed production of the charmed-strange baryon Ξ c + and its neutral isospin partner, the Ξ c 0 . The Ξ c + was reconstructed in the final state Ξ − π + π + , while the Ξ c 0 was seen in decay to Ξ − π + and Ξ − π + π + π − . The average Ξ c fragmentation spectrum has been determined, as well as the production cross section times branching ratio for each decay mode. The charged and neutral masses were measured to be 2465.1 ± 3.6 ± 1.9 MeV/ c 2 and 2472.1 ± 2.7 ± 1.6 MeV/ c 2 respectively, corresponding to a mass-splitting, M ( Ξ c + ) − M ( Ξ c 0 ), of −7.0±4.5±2.2 MeV/ c 2 .

Using the ARGUS detector at DORIS, we have observed the production of F ± mesons in e + e − annihilation at a centre of mass energy of 10 GeV through their subsequent decays into φπ ± and φπ + π − π ± . The values obtained for [ R (e + e − →FX). Branching Ratio] are (1.47 ± 0.32 ± 0.20)% and (1.63 ± 0.42 ± 0.41)% respectively. The observed mass is (1973.6 ± 2.6 ± 3.0) MeV c 2 . The F momentum spectrum is as expected for the fragmentation of c quarks into charmed mesons, but is somewhat softer than for fragmentation into D ∗ mesons. The relevant angular distributions are consistent with a spin-zero assignment of the F meson.

D ∗± production via e + e − → D ∗± X was studied at CM energies near 34 GeV. The charged particles produced in the hemisphere opposite to that of the D ∗ were used to investigate the fragmentation of charm jets. All spectra studied show a close similarity between the charm jet and the average jet obtained by summing over all quark flavours. The spectra of particles produced in the D ∗ hemisphere were used to study separately first rank and higher rank fragmentation.

Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e+e− storage ring at DESY, we have obtained evidence for a new charmed resonance which decays into D*±(2010)π∓. The observed mass and width are 2420±6 MeV/c2 and 70±21 MeV/c2, respectively. The fragmentation function is found to be hard, as expected for a state containing a leading charm quark produced by nonresonant e+e− annihilation.

We present improved measurements of the differential production rates of stable charged particles in hadronic Z0 decays, and of charged pions, kaons and protons identified over a wide momentum range using the SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector. In addition to flavor-inclusive Z0 decays, measurements are made for Z0 decays into light (u, d, s), c and b primary flavors, selected using the upgraded Vertex Detector. Large differences between the flavors are observed that are qualitatively consistent with expectations based upon previously measured production and decay properties of heavy hadrons. These results are used to test the predictions of QCD in the Modified Leading Logarithm Approximation, with the ansatz of Local Parton-Hadron Duality, and the predictions of three models of the hadronization process. The light-flavor results provide improved tests of these predictions, as they do not include the contribution of heavy-hadron production and decay; the heavy-flavor results provide complementary model tests. In addition we have compared hadron and antihadron production in light quark (as opposed to antiquark) jets. Differences are observed at high momentum for all three charged hadron species, providing direct probes of leading particle effects, and stringent constraints on models.
Production rates of all stable charged particles. The statistical and systematic errors are shown separately for the momentum distribution. They are combined in quadrature for the other two distributions. The first DSYS error is due tothe uncertainty in the track finding efficiency and the second DSYS error is th e rest of the systematic error.

Low x deep-inelastic ep scattering data, taken in 1994 at the H1 detector at HERA, are analysed in the Breit frame of reference. The evolution of the peak and width of the current hemisphere fragmentation function is presented as a function of Q and compared with e+e- results at equivalent centre of mass energies. Differences between the average charged multiplicity and the multiplicity of e+e- annihilations at low energies are analysed. Invariant energy spectra are compared with MLLA predictions. Distributions of multiplicity are presented as functions of Bjorken-x and Q^2, and KNO scaling is discussed.
