We present results on .~--p seattering at kinetic energies in the laboratory of 516, 616, 710, 887 and 1085MeV. The data were obtained by exposing a liquid hydrogen bubble chamber to a pion beam from the Saelay proton synchrotron Saturne. The chamber had a diameter of 20 cm and a depth of 10 cm. There was no magnetic field. Two cameras, 15 em apart, were situated at 84 cm from the center- of the chamber. A triple quadrnpole lens looking at an internal target, and a bending magnet, defined the beam, whose momentum spread was less than 2%. The value of the momentum was measured by the wire-orbit method and by time of flight technique, and the computed momentum spread was checked by means of a Cerenkov counter. The pictures were scanned twice for all pion interactions. 0nly those events with primaries at most 3 ~ off from the mean beam direction and with vertices inside a well defined fiducial volume, were considered. All not obviously inelastic events were measured and computed by means of a Mercury Ferranti computer. The elasticity of the event was established by eoplanarity and angular correlation of the outgoing tracks. We checked that no bias was introduced for elastic events with dip angles for the scattering plane of less than 80 ~ and with cosines of the scattering angles in the C.M.S. of less than 0.95. Figs. 1 to 5 show the angular distributions for elastic scattering, for all events with dip angles for the scattering plane less than 80 ~ . The solid curves represent a best fit to the differential cross section. The ratio of charged inelastic to elastic events, was obtained by comparing the number of inelastic scatterings to the areas under the solid curves which give the number of elastic seatterings.

Experimental results are presented on $\pi^+ p$ interactions at 850 MeV/c incident momentum. Cross sections for the various reactions are given. The elastic differential cross section has been fitted to a polynomial in, cos$\theta$ and the resulting coefficients are compared to results at neighbouring incident momenta. For the one-pion-production reactions, the (N$\pi$) effective mass distributions and the ratio of $\pi^0$ to $\pi^+$ production have been compared to the predictions of several theoretical models.

Differential cross sections for the reaction $\gamma p \to n \pi^+$ have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged photon beam with energies from 0.725 to 2.875 GeV. Where available, the results obtained here compare well with previously published results for the reaction. Agreement with the SAID and MAID analyses is found below 1 GeV. The present set of cross sections has been incorporated into the SAID database, and exploratory fits have been made up to 2.7 GeV. Resonance couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations. With the addition of these cross sections to the world data set, significant changes have occurred in the high-energy behavior of the SAID cross-section predictions and amplitudes.

We present results on $\pi^+$-p interactions at 500 MeV from an experiment performed with the Saclay 35 cm hydrogen bubble chamber. A total of 1840 events have been observed. The branching ratio for elastic events is equal to 0.883$\pm$0.008. Eight events are unambiguously attributed to the reaction $\pi^+p\to\pi^+p\gamma$. Cross sections for the various reactions are given. The elastic angular distribution has been determined up to cos$\theta$ = +0.975 and shows evidence for S, P, D waves in good agreement with the results obtained in other experiments. For the one-pion production reactions, the ratio of $\pi^0$ production to $\pi^+$ production is found equal to 4.1$\pm$0.8. This result and the corresponding distributions for momentum and angle of the secondaries are compared with the predictions of the isobaric models.

The interactions of 775 MeV (kinetic energy) π−-mesons in a hydrogen bubble chamber have been studied. Total and partial crosssections have been determined with the following results: σ (total) = (39.0±1.6) mb, σ (elastic)=(14.8±0.7) mb, σ (π− + p → all neutrals) = (9.0 ± 0.5) mb, σ (π− + p = π− + π+ + n) = (9.8 ± 0.5) mb, and σ (π− + p = π− + p + π0) = (4.8 ± 0.3) mb. The elastic-scattering angular distribution has been fitted with a Legendre polynomial series terminated at the fifth order. Various angular and effective-mass distributions of single-π production are presented and discussed in terms of the Olsson-Yodh and O.P.E. models.

A bubble chamber investigation of π−+p elastic scattering at 1 200 MeV (K.E.) is reported. The total and differential cross-sections are determined. By extrapolation of the angular distribution, the 0° cross-section is derived and compared with the results obtained with the help of the dispersion relations and the optical theorem. The forward peak is investigated in terms of diffraction scattering and a value for the optical radius is derived.

The cross section for the reaction [...] was measured at the Caltech synchrotron. The [...] was detected by measuring its decay gamma rays with two lead glass, total absorption Cherenkov counters. The results are three angular distributions at k = 911, 1180, and 1390 MeV, at forward angles from 3 degrees to 90 degrees. The deuteron/proton ratio differs significantly from 2.0, but final state effects from the use of a deuteron target make impossible quantitative conclusions about the neutron cross section.

A new measurement of the differential cross section and of the analysing power A 0 n of the charge-exchange reaction p − p → n − n at 875 MeV/ c is presented. The A 0 n data cover the entire angular range and constitute a considerable improvement over previously published data, both in the forward and in the backward hemisphere. The cross-section data cover only the backward region, but are unique at this energy. A careful study of the long-term drifts of the apparatus has allowed to fully exploit the good statistics of the data.

The pure QED reaction e + e − → γγ has been studied at centre of mass energies around the mass of the Z 0 boson using data recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP. The lower limit on the mass of an excited electron is 82 GeV assuming the coupling constant λ =1. Upper limits on the branching ratios of Z 0 → γγ , Z 0 → π 0 γ and Z 0 → ηγ are set at 3.7×10 −4 , 3.9×10 −4 and 5.8×10 −4 respectively. Two events from the reaction e + e − → γγγ have been observed, consistent with the QED prediction. An upper limit on the branching ratio of Z 0 → γγγ is set at 2.8×10 −4 . Cross sections, differential cross sections, and hyperon polarization results are presented for the reactions K¯0p→Λπ+ and K¯0p→Σ0π+ in the momentum interval 1 to 12 GeV/c. Emphasis is placed on the comparison of Λ and Σ channels, and on the momentum dependences of the data. Σ + p elastic scattering has been studied using a scintillating fiber block (SCIFI) which served as a target for the production of Σ + hyperons as well as for subsequent Σ + scattering on hydrogen. A new technique for the analysis of the hyperon-nucleon scattering in the SCIFI has been developed and established. In this paper, Σ + p elastic scattering events have been identified in the Σ + momentum range of 300–600 MeV/ c , and differential cross sections have been obtained at two angles. The results are compared with various theoretical baryon-baryon interaction models.

The π0 photoproduction cross section has been measured at 180° for photon energies from 220 to 380 MeV, in steps of 20 MeV, by detecting the recoil proton at 0°. The statistical accuracy of the measurements varies between 3 and 7%, depending on the energy. Absolute cross sections have been deduced from a comparison of the measurements with electron-proton scattering. The experimental data are compared with theoretical results calculated from fixed-momentum-transfer dispersion relations. Measurements of the differential cross sections for π−d elastic scattering in the backward angular region are presented. These measurements were made at thirteen incident-pion momenta ranging from 496 to 1050 MeV/c, over the center-of-mass angular range 148° to 177°. The experiment was performed at the LBL Bevatron. Experimental apparatus consisted of a liquid deuterium target and a double-arm spectrometer which included scintillation-counter hodoscopes. Center-of-mass differential cross sections were found to be generally smooth over the angular range covered and can be fitted with low-order polynomials. The extrapolated differential cross sections at 180° scattering angle were found to decrease rapidly with increasing momentum, with a prominent peak near 700 MeV/c and a shoulder near 900 MeV/c. These data are discussed in terms of existing models employing "d*" structures, and are compared with other similar measurements.

The backward differential cross section for π−−d elastic scattering has been measured at incident momenta between 420 and 1160 MeV/c. The data show two bumps at around 670 and 1100 MeV/c, two dips near 630 and 980 MeV/c, and a break at 550 MeV/c. The result of a phenonomenological fit is consistent with the existence of three dibaryon resonances in this energy region. A theoretical calculation of Kanai et al. agrees well with the data below 800 MeV/c, but the agreement becomes worse above 800 MeV/c.

Differential cross sections and beam asymmetries for coherent \pi^\circ photoproduction from ^4He in the \Delta energy-range have been measured with high statistical and systematic precisions using both decay photons for identifying the process. The experiment was performed at the MAinz MIcrotron using the TAPS photon spectrometer and the Glasgow/Mainz tagged photon facility. The differential cross sections are in excellent agreement with predictions based on the DWIA if an appropriate parametrization of the \Delta-nuclear interaction is applied. The beam asymmetries are interpreted in terms of degrees of linear polarization of collimated coherent bremsstrahlung. The expected increase of the degree of linear polarization with decreasing collimation angle is confirmed. The reaction $ pp\to pp\bf \omega$ was investigated with the TOF spectrometer, which is an external experiment at the accelerator COSY (Forschungszentrum Julich, Germany). Total as well as differential cross sections were determined at an excess energy of $93 MeV$ ($p_{beam}=2950 MeV/c$). Using the total cross section of $(9.0\pm 0.7 \pm1.1) \mu b$ for the reaction $ pp\to pp\omega$ determined here and existing data for the reaction $pp\to pp\bf \phi$, the ratio $\mathcal{R}_{\phi/\omega}=\sigma_\phi/\sigma_\omega$ turns out to be significantly larger than expected by the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka (OZI) rule. The uncertainty of this ratio is considerably smaller than in previous determinations. The differential distributions show that the $\omega$ production is still dominated by S-wave production at this excess energy, however higher partial waves clearly contribute. A comparison of the measured angular distributions for $\omega$ production to published distributions for $\phi$ production at $83 MeV$ shows that the data are consistent with an identical production mechanism for both vector mesons.

The data cover photon energies between 0.5 and 3.0 GeV and center-of-mass proton scattering angles 10-160 degrees. The data show a persistent forward-backward angle asymmetry over the explored energy range, and are well-described by the non-perturbative Quark Gluon String Model.
Angular distributions of the photodisintegration cross section for angle between 10 and 50 degrees in the CM.
Angular distributions of the photodisintegration cross section for angle between 50 and 90 degrees in the CM.
Angular distributions of the photodisintegration cross section for angle between 90 and 130 degrees in the CM.
Differential cross sections for Compton scattering by the proton have been measured in the energy interval between 200 and 500 MeV at scattering angles of θ cms = 75° and θ cms = 90° using the CATS, the CATS/TRAJAN, and the COPP setups with the Glasgow Tagger at MAMI (Mainz). The data are compared with predictions from dispersion theory using photo-meson amplitudes from the recent VPI solution SM95. The experiment and the theoretical procedure are described in detail. It is found that the experiment and predictions are in agreement as far as the energy dependence of the differential cross sections in the Δ-range is concerned. However, there is evidence that a scaling down of the resonance part of the M 1+ 3 2 photo-meson amplitude by (2.8 ± 0.9)% is required in comparison with the VPI analysis. The deduced value of the M 1+ 3 2 - photoproduction amplitude at the resonance energy of 320 MeV is: |M 1+ 3 2 | = (39.6 ± 0.4) × 10 −3 m π + −1 .

Differential cross sections for Compton scattering from the free proton at Θ γ ′ lab =130.7° in the energy region from 200 MeV to 410 MeV and for quasi-free Compton scattering from the proton bound in the deuteron at Θ γ ′ lab =148.8° in the energy region from 200 MeV to 290 MeV have been measured. The free proton data are in agreement with dispersion-theory predictions based on standard parameters. The difference of the proton polarizabilities has been extracted from the quasi-free data. Our result, α ̄ − β ̄ =[9.1±1.7( stat+syst )±1.2( mod )]×10 −4 fm 3 , is in reasonable agreement with the world average of the free proton data if the backward spin polarizability γ π is taken to be −37.6×10 −4 fm 4 as predicted by dispersion theory in agreement with many theoretical calculations. This implies that quasi-free Compton scattering may also be used to determine the electromagnetic polarizabilities of the neutron. No indication has been found of a recently suggested new contribution to γ π .

Differential cross sections fore+e−→e+e−, τ+, τ- measured with the CELLO detector at\(\left\langle {\sqrt s } \right\rangle= 34.2GeV\) have been analyzed for electroweak contributions. Vector and axial vector coupling constants were obtained in a simultaneous fit to the three differential cross sections assuming a universal weak interaction for the charged leptons. The results,v2=−0.12±0.33 anda2=1.22±0.47, are in good agreement with predictions from the standardSU(2)×U(1) model for\(\sin ^2 \theta _w= 0.228\). Combining this result with neutrino-electron scattering data gives a unique axial vector dominated solution for the leptonic weak couplings. Assuming the validity of the standard model, a value of\(\sin ^2 \theta _w= 0.21_{ - 0.09}^{ + 0.14}\) is obtained for the electroweak mixing angle. Additional vector currents are not observed (C<0.031 is obtained at the 95% C.L.).

The angular distributions of the unpolarised differential cross section and tensor analysing power $A_{xx}$ of the $\vec{d}d\to\alpha \eta$ reaction have been measured at an excess energy of 16.6 MeV. The ambiguities in the partial-wave description of these data are made explicit by using the invariant amplitude decomposition. This allows the magnitude of the s-wave amplitude to be extracted and compared with results published at lower energies. In this way, firmer bounds could be obtained on the scattering length of the $\eta \alpha$ system. The results do not, however, unambiguously prove the existence of a quasi-bound $\eta \alpha$ state.
