Approximately 60 000 events have been collected in a spark chamber experiment at the CERN Proton Synchrotron which studied elastic diffraction scattering of π--p and p-p at incident momenta of 8.5, 12.4 and 18.4 GeV/c and of π+-p at 8.5 and 12.4 GeV/c. Magnetic analysis of the incoming and diffraction scattered particle, together with measurement of all angles, permitted each event to be determined as elastic subject to three constraints, so that the inelastic background was rejected with. high efficiency, even at the larger momentum, transfers. Much of the data have been processed by the CERN Automatic Flying-Spot DigitizerHPD. A detailed description of the experimental technique and of the methods of analysis is given. The results, together with data from lower energies, confirm the remarkable energy-independence of the shape of the pion-proton diffraction scattering peak up to |t| = 1.5 (GeV/c)2, wheret is the square of the four-momentum transfer, over a range of pion energies from 2 to 18 GeV. Proton-proton scattering does however appear to show a shrinking diffraction peak. In general, the data agree with other experiments using both counter and bubble chamber techniques, but some differences do appear. During the experiment, data were taken which set an upper limit of 2·102 μb/(GeV/c)2 on the differential elastic cross-section dσ/dt over a range of |t| from 20.9 to 23.4 (GeV/c)2 at 13.4 GeV/c incident pion momentum.

A spark-chamber experiment on the peripheral production of 9245 pion pairs by 12- and 18-GeV/c incident pions is reported and analyzed in terms of a one-pion-exchange model in which the final state at the nucleon vertex contains generally one or more pions. The relevant dynamics and kinematics appropriate to this problem are reviewed, and the experimental and analysis techniques giving good resolution and detection-bias correction are discussed in some detail. From the results, fair agreement is found between the data and the one-pion-exchange calculation of the ρ0 production cross sections and of the associated missing-mass spectra. The ρ0 is found to be consistent with a single peak, and no evidence of peak splitting is observed. A search for a narrow s-wave dipion resonance is made with negative results. Normalizing to the ρ0 meson, the s-wave π+π− scattering cross section is computed from the abundant low-dipion-mass events, giving a cross section falling smoothly from 50 mb (300 MeV) to about 20 mb (600 MeV). No evidence of an s-wave resonance is found in this range of energies. Below 450 MeV, the pion-pion scattering asymmetry favors backward scattering (by 2½ standard deviations), which is consistent with a negative and falling J=T=0 phase shift. The extrapolated forward-backward asymmetry and the s-wave cross section are both consistent with a J=T=0 phase shift near|90°| at about 750 MeV.

The elastic scattering of negative pions on protons at 2.26 GeVc has been studied using the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory 72-in. hydrogen-filled bubble chamber. The elastic scattering cross section is found to be 8.91±0.24 mb. The forward diffraction peak is well fitted by an exponential in the square of the four-momentum transfer, and the slope is found to be 8.8±0.1 GeV−2. The differential cross section is parametrized in terms of three models: optical, strong-absorption, and two-slope. It is found that the two-slope model affords the best description of the data and also does very well in predicting the polarization data of other experiments. The best-fit parameters for all three models are given. In addition, the amplitudes associated with the best fits are given for the strong-absorption and the two-slope models.

We have measured the Wolfenstein triple-scattering parameters R, D, and A′ at 1.9 GeV for p−p scattering at 90° in the c.m. system. We find that R=0.11±0.16, A′=−0.54±0.16, and D=0.91±0.21, where these parameters are defined in the c.m. system. The possibility of a vector character for the strong inter-actions is discussed. We conclude that neither a single vector-meson exchange nor a single pseudoscalar-meson exchange can account for the data. Spin effects are found to remain an important part of the nucleon-nucleon interaction at four-momentum transfer −t=1.8 (GeV/c)2.

We present an analysis of ππN final states obtained from π−p interactions at 2.26 GeV/c. Strong ρ production is present in both final states. In addition, significant nucleon isobar production is observed. We observed the following cross sections: σ(π−π0p)=3.77±0.13 mb, σ(π−π+n)=5.67±0.17 mb, σ(ρ−p)=2.19±0.09 mb, σ(Δ+(1236)π−)=0.30±0.10 mb, σ(N0(1650)π0)=0.49±0.07 mb, σ(ρ0n)=2.89±0.11 mb, σ(Δ−(1236)π+)=0.11±0.06 mb, σ(N+(1470)π−)=0.24±0.06 mb, and σ(N+(1650)π−)=0.45±0.05 mb. The spin-density matrix elements are determined for the ρ0 by interpreting the ρ0 asymmetry as an interference between the resonant P wave and a T=0 S wave. A search for the ε0 in the π+π−n final state failed to yield a direct observation of this effect.

The reactions π + p → Δ ++ π + π − and π + p → Δ ++ π + π − π o are used to study ϱ—ω interference at 5.45 GeV/ c . The fitted ϱ mass from a ϱ-ω interference fit is 788 MeV suggesting the possibility of a sum of different interference patterns. Hence the events are weighted by spin density matrix elements which tend to isolate particular exchanges. Results of a fit to these weighted events do not generally agree with the predictions of strong π—B and ϱ—A 2 exchange degeneracy.

The production of the peripheral 3 π mass enhancement in the A 1 region is described. The differential cross section and its variation with 3 π mass is studied and the spin density matrix elements are given for the t -channel and s -channel helicity frames. As observed in π − p interactions t channel but not s channel helicity is conserved. A Deck type double Regge trajectory exchange amplitude gives good fits to the experimental distributions. Its use is supported by the equality of ϱ 0 0 for the A 1 and ϱ 00 for the ϱ in the t -channel, as noted by Donohue.

The production of η and X° mesons has been investigated in four and six prong events from π + p interactions at 5.45 GeV/ c . The cross sections for the quasi two body states Δ ++ η and Δ ++ X° were found to be 0.076±0.013 mb and 0.017±0.006 mb respectively. A clear, prompt dimuon signal has been observed in a low-statistics streamer-chamber experiment with 16-GeV/c πp interactions. The good mass resolution makes it possible to identify the contributions from ρ and ω decays and η and ω Dalitz decays. An excess of events is observed in the mass region ∼400-600 MeV which is not accounted for by the above-mentioned decays.

We have examined the inclusive production of nonstrange particle resonances in νp interactions using the Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber. A sample of 2437 charged-current events with visible longitudinal momentum greater than 10 GeV/c was obtained. The ρ0 and Δ++(1232) are seen. An overall rate of 0.21±0.04 ρ0 per event is found. For five-prong events, the rate is 0.44±0.08 ρ0 per event. The ρ0Z distribution falls rapidly for Z greater than 0.4. The production of Δ++ is seen clearly in events with an identified proton. No evidence is seen for Δ0 production. An upper limit of 0.34 is placed on the ratio of ηπ0 (90% confidence level).

We present a study of the decay properties of charmed D mesons produced near the peak of the ψ′′(3770) resonance in e+e− annihilation. Branching fractions for nine Cabibbo-favored and three Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes are presented along with upper limits on one additional Cabibbo-favored and four additional Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes. A study of Kππ-decay-mode Dalitz plots reveals a large quasi-two-body pseudoscalar-vector component for the D0 decays and an apparent nonuniform population on the Dalitz plot for the D+ decay into K−π+π+. Using tagged events, we measure the charged-particle multiplicity and strange-particle content of D decays. A measurement of the D+ and D0 semileptonic decay fractions indicates that the D+ has a significantly longer lifetime than the D0.

We present results of a detailed analysis of inclusive direct photon production at the ψ(3095). The direct-photon momentum distribution for x>0.4 is presented and compared with the leading-order quantum-chromodynamic prediction. The total production rate is found to be consistent with theoretical expectations, but the observed momentum distribution is considerably softer. Results of an analysis of some inclusive properties of the hadronic system recoiling against the direct photon are presented. The mean charged-particle and Ks multiplicities are presented as functions of the invariant mass of the hadronic system. These data agree well with the corresponding mean multiplicities measured in e+e− annihilations at center-of-mass energies comparable to the invariant mass of the hadronic system.

A narrow state has been observed in the reaction Σ − + Be → ( Λ K − π + π + ) + X in an experiment at the CERN SPS hyperon beam. At 2.46 GeV/ c 2 the effective ( Λ K − π + π + ) mass distribution shows an excess of 82 events above a background estimated to be 147, corresponding to a statistical significance of more than 6 standard deviations. We report results on the differential and total cross sections for inclusive production of the charmed particles D*+, D*0, D0, D+, Ds, and Λc in e+e− annihilations at √s=10.55 GeV. Widely used quark fragmentation models are discussed and compared with the measured charmed-particle momentum distributions. This comparison, as well as that with measurements at other center-of-mass energies, shows the need to take QCD corrections into account and their importance for a correct interpretation of the model parameters. The observed rate of D0 and D+ production is compared to the expected total charm production cross section. We measure the probability of a charmed meson being produced as a vector meson and the D*+ decay branching fraction into D0π+.

We report results from two new methods for measuring the total production of charmed particles in nonresonant e+e− annihilations at √s =10.5 GeV. The rate for detection of events containing two reconstructed charmed mesons relative to that for events containing one is used to extract information about total charm production independent of decay branching fractions. The value of ΔRcc¯, the total charm-pair cross section normalized to the pointlike μ-pair cross section, is found to be 1.13−0.13+0.17±0.09, under an assumption of limited particle correlations. In an independent analysis the inclusive cross section for e+e−→qq¯→e±X is measured to be 0.293±0.017±0.017 nb. Using measured relative production rates and semileptonic branching fractions of D0 and D+ mesons and estimates of these quantities for Ds and Λc, this is found to correspond to ΔRcc¯=2.07±0.12±0.26. These two measurements are discussed in the context of measurements made by reconstruction of exclusive hadronic decay modes and of theoretical expectations.

We have measured np→dπ0 cross sections at eleven beam energies within 16 MeV of threshold. Total cross sections are only 0.67±0.10 of the value which has been generally accepted for s-wave pion production strength near threshold. The differential cross sections are anisotropic at only 1 MeV (c.m.) above threshold. Our results are compared to π+d→pp data and to predictions of two models.
Error quoted contains 2 PCT statistical uncertainty in acceptance measurement.
The two-jet differential cross section d3σ(p¯p→jet 1+jet 2+X)/dEtdη1dη2, averaged over -0.6≤η1≤0.6, at √s =1.8 TeV, has been measured in the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The predictions of leading-order quantum chromodynamics for most choices of structure functions show agreement with the data.
Systematic error contains all known systematic uncertainties, including the effect of uncertainties in the energy scale.

The production rate of charged D* mesons in jets has been measured in 1.8-TeV p¯p collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. In a sample of approximately 32 300 jets with a mean transverse energy of 47 GeV obtained from an exposure of 21.1 nb−1, a signal corresponding to 25.0±7.5(stat)±2.0(syst) D*±→K∓π±π± events is seen above background. This corresponds to a ratio N(D*++D*−)/N(jet) =0.10±0.03±0.03 for D* mesons with fractional momentum z greater than 0.1.
Mean jet transverse energy is 47 GeV. Branching rates for D* --> D0 PI of 0.57 +- 0.04 (DSYS=0.04) and D0 --> K- PI+ of 0.042 +- 0.004 (DSYS=0.004), from MARK-III have been used.
We have measured the strange-quark content of the nucleon, ηs=−0.08+0.012, and the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element ‖Vcd‖=0.220−0.018+0.015 using a sample of 1797 νμ- and ν¯μ-induced μ−μ+ events with Pμ≥9 GeV/c and 30≤Eν≤600 GeV. The data are consistent with the slow-rescaling hypothesis of charm production in ν-N scattering and within this formalism yield a value of the charm-quark mass parameter mc=1.31−0.48+0.64 GeV/c2. .AE

We present the dijet invariant-mass distribution in the region between 60 and 500 GeV, measured in 1.8-TeV p¯p collisions in the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Jets are restricted to the pseudorapidity interval |η|<0.7. Data are compared with QCD calculations; axigluons are excluded with 95% confidence in the region 120<MA<210 GeV for axigluon width ΓA=NαsMA6, with N=5.
Corrected mass distributions for jets restricted to the pseudorapidity region ABS(ETARAP) <0.7.
