Scaling violations of the proton structure function f2 at small x

An analysis is presented of scaling violations of the proton structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) measured with the H1 detector at HERA in the range of Bjorken x values between x = 3 × 10 −4 and 10 −2 for four-momentum transfers Q > 2 larger than 8.7 GeV 2 . The structure function F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) is observed to rise linearly with ln Q 2 . Under the assumption that the observed scaling violations at small x ⩽ 0.01 are described correctly by perturbative QCD, an estimate is obtained of the gluon distribution function G ( x , Q 0 2 ) at Q 2 2 = 20 GeV 2 .

Search for excited quarks in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.8-TeV

If quarks are composite particles then excited states are expected. We have searched in pp¯ collisions for excited quarks (q*) which decay to common quarks by emitting a W boson (q*→qW) or a photon (q*→qγ). The simplest model of excited quarks has been excluded for mass M*<540 GeV/c2 at 95% confidence level.

Production of neutral strange particles in muon - nucleon scattering at 490-GeV

The production ofK0, Λ and\(\bar \Lambda \) particles is studied in the E665 muon-nucleon experiment at Fermilab. The average multiplicities and squared transverse momenta are measured as a function ofxF andW2. Most features of the data can be well described by the Lund model. Within this model, the data on the K0/π± ratios and on the averageK0 multiplicity in the forward region favor a strangeness suppression factors/u in the fragmentation process near 0.20. Clear evidence for QCD effects is seen in the average squared transverse momentum ofK0 and Λ particles.

Composite particle production in relativistic Au + Pt, Si + Pt, and p + Pt collisions

Recently, highly relativistic Au beams have become available at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. Inclusive production cross sections for composite particles, d, t, He3, and He4, in 11.5A GeV/c Au+Pt collisions have been measured using a beam line spectrometer. For comparison, composite particle production was also measured in Si+Pt and p+Pt collisions at similar beam momenta per nucleon (14.6A GeV/c and 12.9 GeV/c, respectively). The projectile dependence of the production cross section for each composite particle has been fitted to Aprojα. The parameter α can be described by a single function of the mass number and the momentum per nucleon of the produced particle. Additionally, the data are well described by momentum-space coalescence. Comparisons with similar analysis of Bevalac A+A data are made. The coalescence radii extracted from momentum-space coalescence fits are used to determine reaction volumes (‘‘source size’’) within the context of the Sato-Yazaki model.

Scaling of multiplicity fluctuations in 800-GeV proton nucleus interactions

The power-law relation between higher order and second order scaled factorial moments has been investigated for secondary particles produced in interactions of 800 GeV protons with emulsion nuclei in one-dimensional (pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle) and two-dimensional (pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle) spaces for three multiplicity intervals. The moment power law is found to be independent of multiplicity cuts and phase space dimension. A universal scaling exponent is determined which indicates that there is no second-order phase transition in the interactions. The ratios of higher-order anomalous fractal dimensions with respect to the second-order anomalous fractal dimension are well represented by the Lévy-stable distribution and give clear evidence of a self-similar cascading mechanism in the interactions.

Annihilation cross-sections σann for antineutrons on some nuclei (C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb) at three antineutron momenta (180, 240 and 280 MeV/c) were measured at LEAR (CERN) with the OBELIX spectrometer. Mass dependence of pi0 production in heavy ion collisions at 1-A/GeV

The production of neutral pions has been studied in the reactions 40 Ar + nat Ca , 86 Kr + nat Zr and 197 Au + 197 Au at 1 A GeV. For high energy pions emitted from the heavier systems a steeper than linear rise of the pion multiplicity with the centrality of the reaction is observed, indicating a pion production process other than binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. At low transverse momenta an enhancement of the π 0 -multiplicity increasing with the mass of the collision system is found. Systematic discrepancies between the experimental results and recent BUU, QMD and Cascade calculations are discussed.
