HEPData Search

We report a measurement of the inclusive charged-particle distribution for gluon jets derived from nearly threefold-symmetric three-jet events taken at center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV in e+e− annihilation. The charged-particle spectrum for these jets is observed to fall off more rapidly than those of quark jets of the same energy.

Errors include both statistics and the uncertainty in correction factors. X is defined at the energy of the individual particle divided by the total energy of the jet to which it is assigned.

A search for the reactionsγγ→ωω andγγ→ρ0ω has been carried out at an averagee+e− CM energy of 34.6 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 45 pb−1. Upper limits are set for these two channels over the γγ CM Energy range of 1.6 to 2.5 GeV. The cross section is determined for the exclusive channelγγ→π+2π−π0.

Search for Two Photon Production of Resonances Decaying Into $K \bar{K}$ and $K \bar{K} \pi$

An analysis of the production ofKS0KS0 andK±Ks0π∓ by two quasi-real photons is presented. The cross section forγγ→K0$\overline {K^0 } $, which is given for the γγ invariant mass range fromK$\bar K$ threshold to 2.5 GeV, is dominated by thef′(1525) resonance and an enhancement near theK$\bar K$ threshold. Upper limits on the product of the two-photon width times the branching ratio intoK$\bar K$ pairs are given forΘ(1700),h(2030), and ξ(2220). For exclusive two-photon production ofK±Ks0π∓ no significant signal was observed. Upper limits are given on the cross section ofγγ→K+$\overline {K^0 } $π− orK−K0π+ between 1.4 and 3.2 GeV and on the product of the γγ width times the branching ratio into theK$\bar K$π final states for theηc(2980) and the ι(1440), yieldingΓ(γγ)→i(1440))·BR(i(1440)→K$\bar K$π<2.2 keV at 95% C.L.

Measurement of the s**(1/2) Dependence of Jet Production at the CERN anti-p p Collider

The production of very large transverse momentum ( p T ) hadron jets has been measured in the UA2 experiment at the CERN p p Collider for s =630 GeV . The inclusive jet production cross sections exhibit a p T -dependent increase with respect to the s =546 GeV data from previous Collider runs. This increase can be described both by QCD calculations and by approximate x T =2 p T /√ s scaling. No significant deviation of the data from QCD predictions is observed at very large p T , placing a lower limit on the characteristic scale Λ c of a hypothetical superstrong contact interaction responsible for the binding of preons in the quark ( Λ c >370 GeV at 95% CL).

Inclusive Properties of d Mesons Produced in 360-GeV pi- p Interactions

The inclusive cross sections for forward D meson production at s =26 GeV in π − p interactions have been measured to be: σ(π − p → D 0 / D 0 + X ) x F >0 = (10.1±2.2)μ b , σ(π − p → D ±+ X ) x F >0 = (5.7±1.6)μ b . The distribution in x F for all D and for x F >0 has the form d σ/ d x F =107 −37 +39 (1−x F ) 7.5 −1.7 +2.5 +5.4 −3.8 +6.0 (1−x F ) 0.7 −0.7 1.0 μ b , with evidence for leading D production. The p T 2 distribution is exponential with slope parameter [−1.18 −0.16 +0.18 ]( GeV / c) −2 . The data are compared with predictions from first-order quark/gluon fusion calculations.

EXCLUSIVE rho0 PRODUCTION IN DEEP INELASTIC MUON PROTON SCATTERING

Exclusive ϱ 0 production has been measured in 120, 200 and 280 GeV muon-proton interactions at high Q 2 (1 GeV 2 < Q 2 < 25 GeV 2 ) and W (6 GeV < W < 19 GeV). The photoproduction cross section decreases as 1/ Q 4 . A shallow t distribution, typical of a hard scattering process is observed and the ϱ 0 is found to be dominantly in the helicity zero spin state. The ϱ 0 s are mainly produced by transverse photons and s -channel helicity conservation seems to be invalid. The data cannot be described by the vector meson dominance model. These data show that at high Q 2 even exclusive ϱ 0 muoproduction is a hard scattering process and that the soft hadron-like properties of the photon have disappeared.

The production properties of a sample of 172 charged intermediate vector bosons produced at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron Collider are described. The production cross-section, the longitudinal- and transverse-momentum distributions and the properties of hadronic jet activity produced in association with the weak bosons are in agreement with the expectations of the QCD-improved Drell-Yan mechanism.
