Inclusive Ξ − production is studied in K − p interactions at 8.25 GeV/ c using about 8000 events. An analysis based on the triple-Regge model shows that the Λ α − Λ γ and Σ β − Σ δ exchanges explain the forward Ξ − production. Ξ(1530) properties are also studied and are found to be similar to those of Ξ − 's. Finally, a study of the production of Ω − based on 67 events shows that Ω's are also produced by hyperon exchange.

The relative production yields and transverse mass spectra for Λ, Λ , Ξ − and Ξ + hyperons in proton-tungsten interactions are presented and compared with the WA85 results from central sulphur-tungsten interactions. A study of the negative particle yield has also been undertaken and the ratio of Λ hyperons to negative particles has been calculated.

Inclusive Λ production has been studied in K − p interactions at 8.25 GeV/ c using about 69 000 events; the total cross section is found to be 3.35 ± 0.20 mb. A comparison has been made with Σ 0 and Σ(1385) inclusive production. Their influence on the inclusive Λ production is discussed. The inclusive Λ cross section and polarization is interpreted in terms of the triple-Regge model. In the target fragmentation region an effective Regge trajectory is determined which lies closer to the K than to the K ∗ . In the beam fragmentation region the cross-section data indicate an effective Regge trajectory which corresponds to the nucleon, while the polarization data require additional Regge exchanges to be present.

A systematic analysis is presented on the reaction K + p → K ∗0 (890) Δ ++ for nine incident momenta between 4.6–16.0 GeV/ c . Cross sections, differential cross sections and vector meson single density matrix elements are given. As a function of energy, little if any change is observed in either the shapes of the differential cross sections or in the values of the density matrix elements. The data are interpreted in terms of current ideas on t -channel exchange mechanisms.

We present a systematic analysis of the production of K ∗+ (892) and Δ ++ (1236) resonances in the K + p → K 0 p π + reaction at 5, 8.25 and 16 GeV/ c . We have measured total cross sections, differential cross sections, density matrix elements and examined resonance production mechanisms in terms of the exchange of states with definite naturality. Some results on the reaction K + p → K ∗+ (1420) p are also given.

The reactions K + p → K ∗+ (890) p , K + p → K ∗+ (1420) p and K + p → K 0 Δ ++ have been systematically studied for eleven incident momenta between 3.0 and 16.0 GeV/ c . Cross sections, differential cross sections and density matrix elements are presented. For K ∗ (890) production the contributions from natural and unnatural parity exchanges have also been separated into I = 0 and I = 1 components. Effective trajectories have been extracted in the case of natural parity exchange, and also for Δ ++ production.

The reaction pp→p f ( π + π − π + π − )p s , where the π + π − π + π − system is centrally produced, has been studied at 300 GeV/ c in an experiment designed to search for gluonic states. The π + π − π + π − mass spectrum shows evidence for the f 1 (1285) with a mass of 1281±1 MeV and a width of 31±5 MeV. In addition there is evidence for two new enhancements at masses of 1449±4 and 1901±13 MeV with widths of 78±18 and 312±61 MeV respectively. An analysis of the state at 1.45 GeV indicates that it is not a π + π − π + π − decay mode of the f 1 (1420) or ι η(1440) .

The reaction pp→p f (K + K − K + K − )p s in which the K + K − K + K − system is centrally produced has been studied at 300 GeV/ c . φφ production has been observed and the ratio σ (φK + K − )/ σ ( φφ ) is 1.0±0.3. The cross section for central production of φφ is found to be the same at 300 GeV/ c and 85 GeV/ c . An angular analysis of the φφ system favours J P =2 + over 0 − .

In a high statistics ( ∼150 eV μb ) bubble chamber experiment on K − p interactions at 8.25 GeV c , the study of the reaction K − p → KK Λ provides evidence for an enhancement in the KK system with a mass of (1850 ± 10) MeV and a width of (80 −30 +40 ) MeV. Its possible identification with the missing isosinglet of the 3 − nonet is discussed. A K ∗ K decay mode is also observed.

An analysis of the Λ p p system produced forward in the reaction K p → Λ p p at 18.5 GeV/ c is presented. The data come from an experiment using the CERN Ω′ spectrometer. Structures are observed in the Λ p mass spectrum and in the double moments H LMlm describing the decay of the Λ p system and the subsequent Λ decay, for L ⩽ 8. A partial wave analysis interprets these structures as resonances of spin parities 2 − and 3 + , masses and widths M = 2200 ± 40 MeV, Γ = 150 ± 30 MeV and M = 2330 ± 40 MeV, Γ = 150 ± 30 MeV respectively.
