ANTI-NEUTRINO - NUCLEON TOTAL CROSS-SECTION AND RATIO OF ANTI-NEUTRINO CROSS-SECTION ON NEUTRONS AND PROTONS

On a selected sample of 2171 events, observed in the big heavy liquid bubble chamber Gargamelle at CERN, the charged current total cross section for antineutrino on nucleons has been determined up to the laboratory energy E v ̄ = 8 GeV . The total cross section is found to be a linear function of the antineutrino energy expressed by σ tot (E v ̄ ) = (0.26 ± 0.020) × 10 −38 × E v ̄ ( GeV ) cm 2 . The energy dependence of 〈q 2 〉 v ̄ is found to be given by 〈q 2 〉 v ̄ = (0.15 ± 0.04)E v ̄ + (0.05 ± 0.12) ( GeV /c) 2 . With a simplified nuclear model the ratio of cross sections on neutrons andprotons has been estimated as a function of energy and for two different values of the scaling variable x . The results are compared with the prediction of the naive quark parton model.

Inelastic Intermediate States in Proton - Deuteron and Deuteron-deuteron Elastic Collisions at the {ISR}

We present experimental results on proton-deuteron and deuteron-deuteron elastic scattering measured at the two highest ISR energies, √ s = 53 GeV and √ s = 63 GeV. The data cover the single- and multiple-scattering regions over a wide interval of four-momentum transfer t . In both reactions we find clear evidence for a substantial t -dependent contribution of inelastic intermediate states in the multiple-scattering region, as well as in single scattering. In the analysis we use the Glauber multiple-scattering theory extended to include inelastic shadow effects. This extension of the basic theory contains as input a triple-Regge parametrization describing the high-mass inclusive spectrum. The analysis of inelastic corrections to multiple scattering on deuterons at high energies is shown to provide a sensitive test of different parametrization of inclusive production in proton-proton collisions.

New Results on Nucleon Double Diffraction at the {CERN} {ISR}

Results on exclusive double diffraction dissociation in (N π ) and (N ππ ) final states are reported for neutron-neutron interactions at √ s = 26.4 GeV and for the proton-neutron interactions at √ s = 37.2 GeV. The data have been obtained at the CERN intersecting storage rings using split field magnet detector with proton-deuteron and deuteron-deuteron colliding beams. Factorization is shown to be verified to a very high degree in both mass- and t -differential cross-sections. The data confirm the previously observed rise in the proton-proton double diffractive cross-section as a function of c.m. energy.

We present the results of a systematic analysis of charge-exchange double dissociation in proton-proton collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The data, obtained with the Split-Field Magnet detector, cover the entire ISR energy range between s = 23 GeV and s = 63 GeV at five standard energies.

We report on inclusive hadron production in e+e− annihilation at 〈s〉=53 GeV2, using a small solid-angle magnetic spectrometer with good particle identification at 90° to the beams at SPEAR II. The cross sections of π± and K± when compared with data at s=23 GeV2 exhibit scaling in (sβ)dσdx with x=2Es12. The invariant cross section depends on the momentum as p−4.

Observation of a Narrow Minimum and of Inelastic Shadow Effects in Deuteron-deuteron Elastic Scattering at $\sqrt{s}=53$-{GeV}

We report on experimental results on deuteron-deuteron elastic scattering at a centre-of-mass energy of √ s = 53 GeV . The data were obtained using the Split Field Magnet detector at the CERN intersecting Storage Rings. The t -dependence of the elastic cross section is measured up to − = 1.5 GeV 2 . We observed a narrow interference minimum in the differential cross section at − = 0.18 GeV 2 . The inclusion of inelastic intermeduate states in the multiple scattering Glauber theory is essential in the description of the data over the entire t -range where discrepancies of up to 25% are observed with the basic theory.

Evidence for Inelastic Propagators in Proton - Deuteron Elastic Scattering at $\sqrt{s}=63$-{GeV}

We report on experimental results on proton-deuteron elastic scattering at a centre-of-mass energy of √ s = 63 GeV . The data were obtained using the Split Field Magnet detector at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. The t -dependence of the elastic differential cross section, measured up to − t = 2.0 GeV 2 , is compared with the prediction of an extended Glauber theory including contributions from inelastic intermediate states. Discrepancies of up to 30% with the basic theory are observed in the interference region. The inelastic contributions are essential for the detailed description of the data both in the single- and double-scattering regions.

Inclusive Muon Production in $e^+ e^-$ Annihilation with $\sqrt{s}$ = 7.3-GeV

We present results on charged multiplicity nch=2 and nch>2 muon events produced in e+e− collisions with 〈s12〉=7.3 GeV at 90° to the beams. The background-subtracted inclusive cross section for the nch=2 events is 10.2±5.4 pb/sr, in agreement with the expected contribution from the heavy lepton τ. The cross section for the nch>2 events is 19.0±6.5 pb/sr whereas we expect only 2.9 pb/sr from the τ, indicating that we may be seeing the weak decays of charmed mesons.

Study of Charge-Exchange Double Dissociation of Protons at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings

We have measured the charge-exchange reaction pp → (p π + ) (p π − ) at s = 23, 31, 45, 53, and 63 GeV at the ISR, using the Split Field Magnet detector. The data are characterized by a sharp forward peak of width 0.02 (GeV/ c ) 2 , followed by a much gentler slope at higher | t |; sizeable Δ ++ , Δ 0 , and N 0 production is observed in the (Nπ) mass spectra. Two different components are present in the data following power-law energy dependence of the type p lab − n with n 1 = −1.63 ± 0.13 and n 2 = −0.96 ± 0.07, respectively, indicating the onset of mechanisms in competition with pion exchange at ISR energies.

The s Dependence of Double Diffraction Dissociation of Protons at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings

We report results on a new measurement of the double diffractive reaction pp → (p π + π − ) (p π + π − ) at the ISR obtained with the Split Field Magnet detector. Experimental procedures and data analysis are discussed in detail. The cross section measured at the five standard ISR energies exhibits an increase of (55 ± 7)% in the s -range from 549 to 3892 GeV 2 .
