Transmission measurements in good and poor geometry have been performed at the Brookhaven Cosmotron to measure the total and absorption cross sections of several nuclei for neutrons in the Bev energy range. The neutrons are produced by bombarding a Be target with 2.2-Bev protons. The neutron detector requires the incident particle to pass an anticoincidence counter and produce in an aluminum radiator a charged particle that will traverse a fourfold scintillation telescope containing 6 in. of lead. Contribution of neutrons below 800 Mev are believed small. The angular distribution of neutrons from the target is sharply peaked forward with a half-width of 6°. The integral angular distributions of diffraction scattered neutrons from C, Cu, and Pb are measured by varying the detector geometry. The angular half-width of these distributions indicates a mean effective neutron energy of 1.4±0.2 Bev. The total cross sections σH and σD−σH are measured by attenuation differences in good geometry of CH2-C and D2O-H2O, with the result: σH=42.4±1.8 mb, σD−σH=42.2±1.8 mb. The cross sections of eight elements from Be to U are measured in good and poor geometry, and the following values of the total and absorption cross sections are deduced (in units of millibrans): Experimental errors are about 3 percent in σtotal and 5 percent in σabsorption. An interpretation of these cross sections is given in terms of optical model parameters for two extreme nuclear density distributions: uniform (radius R) and Gaussian [ρ=ρ0exp−(ra)2]. The absorption cross-section data are well fitted with R=1.28A13 or a=0.32+0.62A13 in units of 10−13 cm. A nuclear density distribution intermediate between uniform and Gaussian will make the present results consistent with the recent electromagnetic radii.

3 H̃e nuclei were observed in the negative beam, produced by 70 GeV protons on an Al target. Five 3 H̃e have been identified among 2.4 · 10 11 particles that passed through the apparatus. Scintillation and Čerenkov counters were used to measure the electrical charge and velocity of particles. The mass of 3 H̃e is found to be M 3 H ̃ e = (1.00 ± 0.03)3m p , the charge is z = (0.99 ± 0.03)2 e . The ratio of differential production cross sections of 3 H ̃ e (P = 20 GeV /c) and π − (P = 10 GeV/c ) equals 2 · 10 −11 . This corresponds to antihelium −3 production cross section d 2 σ 3 H ̃ e / d Ω d P = 2.0 · 10 −35 cm 2 / sr · GeV /c per Al nuclei and 2.2 · 10 −36 cm 2 sr · GeV/ c per nucleon.

Nucl.Phys.B 31 (1971) 253-260, 1971.
Inspire Record 68562 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.33323

The absorption cross sections of antideuterons with the momentum P = 13.3 GeV/ c by Li, C, Al, Cu and Pb nuclei have been measured. Antiproton stripping of antideuterons has been registered and its cross section for C, Al and Cu has been defined. The binding energy of antideuteron is found to be ε d = 2.4 ± 0.6 MeV by measuring the angular distribution of antiprotons from stripping.

Experimental comparison of anti-d p and anti-p d total cross-sections

Phys.Lett.B 34 (1971) 167-169, 1971.
Inspire Record 69336 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.5847

d ̄ p and p ̄ d total cross-sections have been measured at 13.3 and 6.65 GeV/ c respectively to check CPT-invariance. The standard transmission technique was used. The difference of d ̄ p and p ̄ d total cross-sections appeared to be equal 0.2 ± 2.6 mb. In addition d ̄ d and p ̄ p total cross-sections have been obtained. The experimental data allowed us to derive the total cross-section of antineutrons on protons, neutrons and deutrons.

Phys.Rev.Lett. 35 (1975) 346, 1975.

The production of ψ(3.1) mesons is reported for the reactions π−+Fe→μ++μ−+anything, at 200 GeV, and p+Fe→μ++μ−+anything, at 240 GeV. For ψ production, distributions in x≡PLPbeam and P⊥ are given. For x>~0.5, the ratio of the ψ production cross sections in iron for pions to that for protons is found to be 7.4±2.0.

Measurement of $\phi$ Production in Proton - Nucleus Collisions at 400-GeV/c

Akerlof, C.W. ; Alley, P. ; Bintinger, D. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.Lett. 39 (1977) 861, 1977.
Inspire Record 120734 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20951

We have measured the invariant cross section for inclusive ϕ production in proton-nucleus collisions at 400 GeV/c near Feynman x=0. For transverse momenta in the range between 0.8 and 3.5 GeV/c the ratio of ϕ to π− rises from 1 to 7%. We also report on correlations with particles opposite the ϕ in the center-of-mass system as they relate to the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule.

Diffraction Dissociation of High Energy Protons on Hydrogen and Deuterium Targets

We report results from a measurement of the inclusive processes pp→Xp and pd→Xd in the range 5<Mx2s<0.1, 0.01≲|t|≲0.1 (GeV/c)2, and incident proton momenta of 65, 154, and 372 GeV/c. Both pp and pd data show an exponential t dependence and a dominant 1Mx2 behavior for Mx2s≲0.05. By comparing pp and pd data we test factorization and, using the Glauber model, we measure the XN total cross section, σXN=43±10 mb.
