The analysis of the data collected by the NA50 experiment in 1998, reported in this paper, extends and clarifies the pattern of the previously observed J/ ψ anomalous suppression. This new measurement, besides providing a deeper understanding of the previous observations, reveals a steady significative decrease in the J/ ψ production rate up to the most central Pb-Pb collisions. It clearly rules out the presently available conventional (hadronic) models of J/ ψ suppression, which unanimously predict a saturation of the J/ ψ rate for central Pb-Pb collisions. On the contrary and together with the sharp onset of the anomalous suppression previously reported, the new observation leads to a global production rate pattern which finds its natural explanation in the framework of the formation of a deconfined state of quarks and gluons.

We use 106 $\ipb$ of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab to search for narrow-width, vector particles decaying to a top and an anti-top quark. Model independent upper limits on the cross section for narrow, vector resonances decaying to $\ttbar$ are presented. At the 95% confidence level, we exclude the existence of a leptophobic $\zpr$ boson in a model of topcolor-assisted technicolor with mass $M_{\zpr}$ $<$ 480 $\gev$ for natural width $\Gamma$ = 0.012 $M_{\zpr}$, and $M_{\zpr}$ $<$ 780 $\gev$ for $\Gamma$ = 0.04 $M_{\zpr}$.

We have measured the polarization of J/Psi and Psi(2S) mesons produced in p\bar{p} collisions at \sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV, using data collected at CDF during 1992-95. The polarization of promptly produced J/Psi [Psi(2S)] mesons is isolated from those produced in B-hadron decay, and measured over the kinematic range 4[5.5] < P_T < 20 GeV/c and |y| < 0.6. For P_T \gessim 12 GeV/c we do not observe significant polarization in the prompt component.

We have measured the pT distribution of top quarks that are pair produced in pp¯ collisions at s=1.8TeV using a sample of tt¯ decays in which we observe a single high- pT charged lepton, a neutrino, and four or more jets. We use a likelihood technique that corrects for the experimental bias introduced due to event reconstruction and detector resolution effects. The observed distribution is consistent with the standard model prediction. We use these data to place limits on the production of high- pT top quarks suggested in some models of anomalous top quark pair production.

We report on the first measurement of the rapidity distribution dsigma/dy over nearly the entire kinematic region of rapidity for e^+e^- pairs in the Z-boson region of 66<M_{ee}<116 GeV/c^2 and at higher mass M_{ee}>116 GeV/c^2. The data sample consists of 108 pb^{-1} of ppbar collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV taken by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during 1992--1995. The total cross section in the $Z$-boson region is measured to be 252 +- 11 pb. The measured total cross section and d\sigma/dy are compared with quantum chromodynamics calculations in leading and higher orders.

Test of enhanced leading order QCD in W boson plus jets events from 1.8-TeV anti-p p collisions

Phys.Rev.D 63 (2001) 072003, 2001.
Inspire Record 533836 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.42974

We present a study of events with W bosons and hadronic jets produced in p¯p collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV. The data consist of 51400 W→eν decay candidates from 108 pb−1 of integrated luminosity collected using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Cross sections and jet production properties have been measured for W+>~1 to >~4 jet events. The data compare well to predictions of leading-order QCD matrix element calculations with added gluon radiation and simulated parton fragmentation.

Search for neutral supersymmetric Higgs bosons in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.8-TeV

Phys.Rev.Lett. 86 (2001) 4472-4478, 2001.
Inspire Record 535426 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.42952

We present the results of a search for neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with $b$ quarks in $p\bar{p}\to b\bar{b} \phi\to b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ final states with $91 \pm 7$ pb$^{-1}$ of $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We find no evidence of such a signal and the data is interpreted in the context of the neutral Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. With basic parameter choices for the supersymmetric scale and the stop quark mixing, we derive 95% C.L. lower mass limits for neutral Higgs bosons for $\tb$ values in excess of 35.

Muon pairs produced in Pb–Pb interactions at 158 GeV/ c per nucleon are used to study the transverse momentum distributions of the J/ ψ , ψ ′ and dimuons in the mass continuum. In particular, the dependence of these distributions on the centrality of the Pb–Pb collision is investigated in detail.

Measurement of the two jet differential cross-section in proton anti-proton collisions at s**(1/2) = 1800-GeV

The CDF collaboration Affolder, T. ; Akimoto, H. ; Akopian, A. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 64 (2001) 012001, 2001.
Inspire Record 538041 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.42933

A measurement is presented of the two-jet differential cross section, d^3\sigma/dE_T d\eta_1 d\eta_2, at center of mass energy sqrt{s} = 1800 GeV in proton-antiproton collisions. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 86 pb^-1 collected during 1994-1995 by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The differential cross section is measured as a function of the transverse energy, E_T, of a jet in the pseudorapidity region 0.1 < |eta_1| < 0.7 for four different pseudorapidity bins of a second jet restricted to 0.1 < |\eta_2| < 3.0. The results are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations determined using the CTEQ4 and MRST sets of parton distribution functions. None of the sets examined in this analysis provides a good description of the data.

We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fraction R= B(t-->wb)/B(t-->Wq) from ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV. The data set corresponds to 109 pb-1 of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab during the 1992-1995 Tevatron run. We measure R=0.94+.31-.24 (stat+syst) or R>0.61 (0.56) at 90 (95) %C.L., in agreement with the standard model predictions. This measurement yields a limit of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix element Vtb under the assumption of three generation unitarity.
