STUDY OF THE REACTIONS K+- P ---> K0(S) PI+- P AT 30-GEV/C AND 50-GEV/C: DESCRIPTION OF THE APPARATUS AND AMPLITUDE ANALYSIS OF THE K0(S) PI SYSTEM

The reactions K ± p→K s 0 π ± p are studied at 30 and 50 GeV/ c . Data for these reactions were obtained using the Geneva-Lausanne spectrometer whose main characteristics are: (i) large forward acceptance; (ii) high-resolution time-of-flight for recoil proton momentum measurement; (iii) high data-taking rate and on-line pattern recognition. The K ∗ (1 − ), K ∗ (2 + ), K ∗ (3 − ) and K ∗ (4 + ) resonance parameters and production cross sections are determined. The K π production amplitudes are calculated both as a function of the K π mass and of the momentum transfer. Isoscalar natural parity exchange (NPE) is dominant. The NPE amplitudes are decomposed into pomeron- f-, ω-exchange contributions, and their energy dependence between 10 and 50 GeV/ c is shown to be well-described by a Regge pole model based on the f-dominated pomeron hypothesis.

Test of Nuclear Effects in Hadronic Dimuon Production

We present the final analysis of the nuclear effects on the cross section of dimuon production, using simultaneously a hydrogen and a platinum target in a 150, 200 and 280 GeV pion beam. For the dimuon mass interval 4.1 to 8.5 GeV, the ratio of the cross sections is in agreement with the Drell-Yan model within a 10% error, mainly due to systematics. The variation of this ratio with the dimuon mass, x 1 and x 2 is also in good agreement, and no variation with the transverse momentum is observed.

Production of Hyperons and Hyperon Resonances in $\Xi^- N$ Interactions at 102-{GeV}/$c$ and 135-{GeV}/$c$

Ξ− interactions in hydrogen and deuterium are studied close to the forward direction using the CERN charged hyperon beam. The inclusive production of ∑*−(1385),Ξ−,Ξ*0(1530),Ξ*−(1700),Ξ*−(1830), and Ω− is observed, as well as an enhancement in theΞ−π+ channel at 1940 MeV/c2. The momentum distributions and the production cross sections are measured for ∑*−(1385),Ξ−,Ξ*0(1530), and Ω−.

Measurements of the Total Cross-sections of $\Sigma^-$ and $\Xi^-$ on Protons and Deuterons Between 74-{GeV}/$c$ and 137-{GeV}/$c$

The Σ − p and Σ − d total cross sections have been measured to a statistical accuracy of ±1% and ±0.5%, respectively, at five momenta from 74.5 to 136.9 GeV/ c , using the hyperon beam at the CERN SPS. The Ξ − p and Ξ − d total cross sections have also been measured to the same statistical accuracy at 101.5 and 133.8 GeV/ c . The systematic uncertainty at each momentum is estimated to be of the order of ±0.5%. The hyperon-nucleon cross sections are shown to be rising with energy, and the data are compared with various phenomenological models.

High Statistics Study of ($\sim$ 10$^6$ events) of $J/\psi$ Production and $\Upsilon$ Production in the energy range 150 to 280 GeV by $\pi^\pm$, $p^\pm$ incident particle

We have performed in the NA3 experiment the study of high mass dimuon production by a hadronic unseparated beam on hydrogen and platinum targets. The comparison of the production cross‐section for proton and antiproton together with the differential cross‐section dσ/dx allows us to compare the data with a production mechanism involving quark‐antiquark and gluon‐gluon interactions. The cosΘ* distribution of the same J/ψ data have also been analysed and results will be presented. Finally we have observed T production from 150 GeV/c incident pions.

Observation of a Narrow Hyperon State of Mass 3.17-{GeV}

We present evidence for a narrow Y ∗ with a mass of 3.17 GeV and a width ⩽ 20 MeV decaying to ΣKK̄ + pions, ΛKK̄ + pions and ΞK + pions. The data come from two high statistics K − p bubble chamber experiments with a sensitivity of ≈100 eV/ μb at 8.25 GeV/ c and ≈ 45 eV/ μb at 6.5 GeV/ c .

We have measured the production of massive muon pairs in hadronic collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). A clear signal of production of the ϒ resonance by π + of 200 GeV/ c and π − of 200 and 280 GeV/ c on a platinum target is observed.
