We present evidence for the non-Abelian nature of QCD from a study of multijet events produced in e+e− annihilations from √s =50 to 57 GeV in the AMY detector at the KEK storage ring TRISTAN. A comparison of the three-jet event fraction at TRISTAN to the fraction of the DESY storage ring PETRA shows that the QCD coupling strength αs decreases with increasing Q2. In addition, measurements of the angular distributions of four-jet events show evidence for the triple-gluon vertex.

Inspire Record 276653 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29847

The total cross section for e + e − annihilation into hadrons has been measured for CM energies ranging from 50 to 57 GeV. We fit the predictions of the standard model to these measurements and those at lower energies. The mass of the Z 0 boson, M Z , and the QCD scale parameter, Λ MS , are derived from the fit. The results are M Z =88.6 −1.8 +2.0 GeV/ c 2 , and Λ MS =0.15 −0.11 +0.16 GeV .

Measurements of the differential cross sections for e + e − →μ + μ − and e + e − →τ + τ − at values of s from 52 to 57 GeV are reported. The forward-backward asymmetries and the total cross sections for these reactions are found to be in agreement with predictions of the standard model of the electro-weak interactions. These measurements are used to extract values of the weak coupling constant g v e g v l and g A e g A l , where l = μ or τ .

EXPERIMENTAL MASS LIMIT FOR A FOURTH GENERATION SEQUENTIAL LEPTON FROM e+ e- ANNIHILATIONS AT S**(1/2) = 56-GeV

Phys.Rev.Lett. 61 (1988) 911, 1988.
Inspire Record 261848 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20055

A search for pair production of fourth-generation sequential leptons in e+e− annihilation at a center-of-mass energy s=56 GeV is reported. Event topologies corresponding to the cases where one particle decays leptonically while the other decays hadronically as well as those where both particles decay hadronically were explored. We set a 95%-confidence-level lower limit of 27.6 GeV/c2 for the mass of a fourth-generation lepton.

Measurements of r and a Search for Heavy Quark Production in e+ e- Annihilation at s**(1/2) = 50-GeV and 52-GeV

Phys.Rev.Lett. 60 (1988) 93, 1988.
Inspire Record 251270 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20143

The ratio R of the cross section for e+e− annihilation into hadronic final states to the QED cross section for muon-pair production is measured to be 4.34±0.45±0.30 and 4.23±0.20±0.21 at c.m. energies of 50 and 52 GeV, respectively. From these values of R and an analysis of the event shapes we deduce a 95%-confidence-level upper limit for the production rate of new heavy charge +23e or −13e quarks to be 0.19 units of R.

The measurement of the nonelectromagnetic forward-backward charge asymmetry in the reaction e+e−→μ+μ− at s∼34.6 GeV and in the angular region 0<|cosθ|<0.8 is reported. With a systematic error less than 1%, we observe an asymmetry of (-8.1±2.1)%. This is in agreement with the standard electroweak theory prediction of (-7.6±0.6)%. The weak-current coupling constants are also reported.

Measurement of Hadron Production and Three Jet Event Properties at {PETRA} {MIT}

We have performed a high statistics measurement of the production rate and the energy flow pattern of hadron events between √ s =33 and 36.7 GeV. The data show no evidence for the production of a new quark with charge 2 3 e . Planar events in e + e − →hadrons are shown to have three well separated jets. The production rate and the shape of three-jet events are compared with many models and we find that only the QCD model can explain the data.

We have performed a high-statistics measurement of Bhabha scattering and of the production of hadrons in electron-positron annihilation at PETRA energies (12 GeV<~s<~36.7 GeV). Combining the results with measurements of μ+μ− and τ+τ− production enables us to compare our results with electroweak theory. We find sin2θw=0.27±0.08. This is in good agreement with the value obtained from neutrino experiments which were carried out in entirely different kinematic regions.

Unique Solution for the Weak Neutral Current Coupling Constants in Purely Leptonic Interactions

By combining results from the MARK-J at PETRA on Bhabha scattering, μ + μ - and τ + τ - production with recent world data from neutrino-electron scattering experiments, we determine unique values for the leptonic weak neutral current coupling constants g V and g A in the framework of electroweak models containing a single Z 0 . In contrast to previous analyses, we only use data from purely leptonic interactions, and therefore avoid the inherent uncertainties resulting from the use of hadronic targets. From the MARK-J data alone in the context of the standard SU(2) ⊗ U (1) model of Glashow, Weinberg and Salam, we find sin 2 θ W =0.24±0.11.

Search for the Production of a New Quark Flavor at the Highest {PETRA} Energies

Phys.Rev.Lett. 44 (1980) 1722, 1980.
Inspire Record 152616 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.20702

This paper reports the results of a study of hadron production in e+e− collisions at c.m. system energies of 33, 35, and 35.8 GeV. Production of a new quark flavor has been sought. The measured values of the total cross section, the thrust distributions, and the study of inclusive muon production show no evidence for the production of a new charge-23e quark near threshold. In addition, during an energy scan in the region 29.9<~s<~31.6 GeV, no hadron resonance indicating the existence of a bound state composed of charge-23e quarks has been found.
