The Fermilab 15-ft bubble chamber has been exposed to a quadrupole triplet neutrino beam produced at the Tevatron. The ratio of ν to ν¯ in the beam is approximately 2.5. The mean event energy for ν-induced charged-current events is 150 GeV, and for ν¯-induced charged-current events it is 110 GeV. A total of 64 dimuon candidates (1 μ+μ+, 52 μ−μ+ and μ+μ−, and 11 μ−μ−) is observed in the data sample of approximately 13 300 charged-current events. The number and properties of the μ−μ− and μ+μ+ candidates are consistent with their being produced by background processes, the important sources being π and K decay and punchthrough. The 90%-C.L. upper limit for μ−μ−/μ− for muon momenta above 4 GeV/c is 1.2×10−3, and for momenta above 9 GeV/c this limit is 1.1×10−3. The opposite-sign-dimuon–to–single-muon ratio is (0.62±0.13)% for muon momenta above 4 GeV/c. There are eight neutral strange particles in the opposite-sign sample, leading to a rate per dimuon event of 0.65±0.29. The opposite-sign-dimuon sample is consistent with the hypothesis of charm production and decay.

We present a measurement of the total cross section for γγ→hadrons, with one photon quasireal and the other a spacelike photon of mass squared −Q2. Results are presented as a function of Q2 and the γγ center-of-mass energy W, with the Q2 range extending from 0.2 to 60 GeV2, and W in the range from 2 to 10 GeV. The data were taken with the TPC/Two-Gamma facility at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP, which was operated at a beam energy of 14.5 GeV. The cross section exhibits a gentle falloff with increasing W. Its Q2 dependence is shown to be well described by an incoherent sum of vector-meson and pointlike scattering over most of the observed W range. Agreement at high Q2 is improved if a minimum-pT cutoff (motivated by QCD) is imposed on the pointlike contribution.

Using 123 multihadronic inclusive muon-production e+e− annihilation events at an average c.m. energy of 55.2 GeV, we extracted the forward-backward charge asymmetry of the e+e−→bb¯ process and the R ratio for bb¯ production. We used an analysis method in which the behavior of the c quark and lighter quarks is assumed, with only that of the b quark left indeterminate. The results, Ab=-0.72±0.28(stat)±0.13(syst) and Rb=0.57±0.16±0.10, are consistent with the standard model.
Asymmetry in BOTTOM quark production.
Ratio of BOTTOM quark production to total hadron cross section (R value).
We report a measurement of the e+e−→e+e−pp¯π+π− process with the TPC/Two-Gamma facility at the PEP e+e− storage ring at SLAC. Forty-five pp¯π+π− events were identified in data corresponding to an integrated e+e− luminosity of 142 pb−1. The cross section for γγ→pp¯π+π− is given both as a function of the γγ center-of-mass energy Wγγ, with Wγγ between 2.5 and 5.5 GeV, and as a function of the in variant mass squared q2 of one of the photons, with −q2<7 GeV2. This cross section falls much less rapidly with Wγγ than does the cross section for a similar process, γγ→pp¯. No Δ0Δ¯0 production is observed, and only a small fraction of the events at low Wγγ is consistent with γγ→Δ++Δ¯−−, Δ++p¯π−, or Δ¯−−pπ+. In an expanded search through the same data, four events compatible with either ΛΛ¯(Λ→pπ−) or Σ0Λ¯(Σ0→Λγ) production were found.

The total cross section for e + e − annihilation into hadrons has been measured for CM energies ranging from 50 to 57 GeV. We fit the predictions of the standard model to these measurements and those at lower energies. The mass of the Z 0 boson, M Z , and the QCD scale parameter, Λ MS , are derived from the fit. The results are M Z =88.6 −1.8 +2.0 GeV/ c 2 , and Λ MS =0.15 −0.11 +0.16 GeV .

We present evidence for the non-Abelian nature of QCD from a study of multijet events produced in e+e− annihilations from √s =50 to 57 GeV in the AMY detector at the KEK storage ring TRISTAN. A comparison of the three-jet event fraction at TRISTAN to the fraction of the DESY storage ring PETRA shows that the QCD coupling strength αs decreases with increasing Q2. In addition, measurements of the angular distributions of four-jet events show evidence for the triple-gluon vertex.
