We report the final results of a search for narrow structures in the p¯p total cross section between 395 and 740 MeV/c with a rms mass resolution of 1.5 MeV around the S-resonance region. A reanalysis of the data significantly improved the statistical accuracy. No evidence is found for narrow structures and a 90%-confidence-level upper limit of 24 mb MeV is set at around 500 MeV/c for the integrated cross section of a Breit-Wigner-type resonance of width ≲4 MeV.

The total p¯p cross section has been measured in the S region by the transmission method with use of a beam-monitoring spectrometer. The result is inconsistent with the existence of the narrow resonance S(1936) with cross sections reported by previous experiments.

We have carried out high-statistics measurements of inclusive π0 and γ-ray spectra from p¯p annihilation at rest. From the monochromatic peaks in the π0 spectra, we derive the yield (or its upper limit) of the reaction p¯p→π0M for M=φ, η’, ω, ρ0, η, and π0. The same quantity was independently obtained from the γ-ray spectra, which included some π0’s that were mistaken as single γ rays due to the limited granularity of the γ detector. Taking the monochromatic peaks in the γ-ray spectra as being due to prompt γ rays, we also derive the upper limit for p¯p→γM.

By using modularized NaI(Tl) detectors, we carried out a high statistics measurement of inclusive π 0 spectra from p p annihilation at rest. We did not observe any narrow π 0 peaks arising from baryonium production, p p →π 0 B . The σ upper limit of the yield varied between 10 −2 and 10 −4 depending on the mass and oncharge multiplicity. Three narrow peaks at 2 σ levels were seen at approximately the same masses as in the previous measurement of p p → γ B .We also derived the yield of p p annihilation into π 0 M for M = ø , η ′, ω , ϱ 0 , η and π 0 .

Multihadron production by electron-positron colliding beams has been investigated for total centre-of-mass energies ranging from 1.2 to 2.4 GeV. The total cross-section, σtot ≡ σ(e+e−→π+π−+ + anything), is of the order of σμμ ≡ σ(e+e−→μ+μ−), with a threshold near 1 GeV. Partial cross-sections for the various channels are also derived. The cross-section of the specific channel e+e−→π+π−π+π− exhibits an energy dependence which is suggestive of a heavier vector meson, ρ' (mρ,≈ 1.6 GeV,Гρ, ≈ 350 Mev), having the same quantum numbers as the ρ-meson. An upper limit is given for the coupling constantfρ′ (fρ′/4π<18, wherefρ′=mρ′2e/gγρ′). Final states withG+ parity are found to be much more abundant than those withG− parity. The average multiplicity (charged plus neutral final-state pions) is found to be betweet 4 and 5 over all the energy range explored.

We have measured the cross section of four charged pion production in photon-photon interactions in the invariant mass range 1.0≦Wγγ≦3.2 GeV and up toQ2=16 GeV2. For 1.2 GeV≦Wγγ≦1.7 GeV the process is dominated by ρ0ρ0 production with a rapid rise in cross section around 1.2 GeV, well below the nominal ρ0ρ0 threshold. The observed distributions in the two particle masses and in the production and decay angles are well described by an incoherent sum of the phase-space subprocesses γγ →ρ0ρ0, →ρ0π+π−, and →π+π−π+π−. A spin-parity analysis of the ρ0ρ0 system showsJP=2+ to dominate, although 0+ is also possible forWγγ≦1.4 GeV. Negative partity states are excluded.

This paper presents the results of a study of the dominant neutral final states from π−p interactions. The data were obtained in an experiment performed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, using a set of steel-plate optical spark chambers surrounding a liquid-hydrogen target. We present differential and total cross sections for the reactions (1) π−p→n+π0 and (2) π−p→n+η0(η0→2γ) and total cross sections for the reactions (3) π−p→n+kπ0 (k=2, 3, 4, and 5) and (4) π−p→all neutrals for eighteen values of beam momentum in the interval 1.3 to 4.0 GeV/c. The angular distributions for (1) and (2) have been analyzed in terms of expansions in Legendre polynomials, the coefficients for which are also given.

Data are presented for the reaction ep → ep π 0 at a nominal four-momentum transfer squared of 0.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The data were obtained using an extracted electron beam from NINA and two magnetic spectrometers for coincidence detection of the electron and proton. Details are given of the experimental method and the results are given for isobar masses in the range 1.19 – 1.73 GeV/ c 2 .

Reactions p p → p p and p p → n n were studied at the kinetic energy 230 MeV of incident p by using bubble chamber films. Total cross sections for both of the reactions were found to be 51.2 ± 1.6 mb and 9.1 ± 0.6 mb, respectively. Differential cross sections are well explained by the phenomenological theory given by Bryan and Phillips.
