Differential cross sections for the reaction $\gamma p \to p \pi^0$ have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged photon beam with energies from 0.675 to 2.875 GeV. The results reported here possess greater accuracy in the absolute normalization than previous measurements. They disagree with recent CB-ELSA measurements for the process at forward scattering angles. Agreement with the SAID and MAID fits is found below 1 GeV. The present set of cross sections has been incorporated into the SAID database, and exploratory fits have been extended to 3 GeV. Resonance couplings have been extracted and compared to previous determinations.

From analysis of V0 events observed in an exposure of the National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. bubble chamber to 303−GeVc protons, we obtain these results: (1) 〈nπ0〉 rises approximately linearly with n-, implying strong coupling of neutral and charged pions, while 〈nKS0〉 is less coupled to n; (2) γ, KS0, and Λ0 production cross sections are approaching a scaling limit by 303 GeVc; (3) within the limited statistics, dσdy is flat in the central region for KS0 and low-multiplicity γ events.

We have measured the cross section for production of ψ and ψ′ in p¯ and π− interactions with Be, Cu, and W targets in experiment E537 at Fermilab. The measurements were performed at 125 GeV/c using a forward dimuon spectrometer in a closed geometry configuration. The gluon structure functions of the p¯ and π− have been extracted from the measured dσdxF spectra of the produced ψ's. From the p¯W data we obtain, for p¯, xG(x)=(2.15±0.7)[1−x](6.83±0.5)[1+(5.85±0.95)x]. In the π− case, we obtain, from the W and the Be data separately, xG(x)=(1.49±0.03)[1−x](1.98±0.06) (for π−W), xG(x)=(1.10±0.10)[1−x](1.20±0.20) (for π−Be).

psi' production is studied in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon incident momentum. Absolute cross-sections are measured and production rates are investigated as a function of the centrality of the collision. The results are compared with those obtained for lighter colliding systems and also for the J/psi meson produced under identical conditions.

Ψ′ and J/Ψ yields are compared in p-W, p-U and S-U interactions at 200 GeV/nucleon. Their ratio decreases from proton-t to sulphur-induced reactions. It also decreases in sulphur-induced reactions from peripheral to central collisions. This result could indicate that the Ψ′ and J/Ψ suppression mechanisms have different origins in p- and S-induced reactions.

Total and differential cross sections for the exclusive reaction pp->pp rho^0 observed via the pi+pi- decay channel have been measured at beam momentum=3.67 GeV/c. The observed total meson production cross section is determined to be 23.4 +- 0.8 +-8 microb and is significantly lower than typical cross sections used in model calculations for heavy ion collisions. The differential cross sections measured indicate a strong anisotropy cos^2(theta^{CM}) in the rho^0 meson production.
Total cross section determined by normalising to the simultaneously measured ETA yield to the known cross section of 135 +- 35 MUB.
We report results on rho(770)^0 -> pi+pi- production at midrapidity in p+p and peripheral Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. This is the first direct measurement of rho(770)^0 -> pi+pi- in heavy-ion collisions. The measured rho^0 peak in the invariant mass distribution is shifted by ~40 MeV/c^2 in minimum bias p+p interactions and ~70 MeV/c^2 in peripheral Au+Au collisions. The rho^0 mass shift is dependent on transverse momentum and multiplicity. The modification of the rho^0 meson mass, width, and shape due to phase space and dynamical effects are discussed.
The raw $\pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ invariant mass distributions after subtraction of the like-sign reference distribution for minimum bias p+p (top) and peripheral Au+Au (bottom) interactions.
The raw $\pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ invariant mass (solid line) and the like-sign reference distributions (open circles) for peripheral Au+Au collisions.
The $\rho^{0}$ mass as a function of $p_{T}$ for minimum bias $p$+$p$ (filled circles), high multiplicity $p$+$p$ (open triangles), and peripheral Au+Au (filled squares) collisions. The error bars indicate the systematic uncertainty. Statistical errors are negligible. The $\rho^{0}$ mass was obtained by fitting the data to the BW×PS functional form described in the text. The dashed lines represent the average of the $\rho^{0}$ mass measured in $e^{+} e^{−}$. The shaded areas indicate the ρ0 mass measured in $p$+$p$ collisions. The open triangles have been shifted downward on the abscissa by $50$ MeV/$c$ for clarity.
Photoproduction reactions occur when the electromagnetic field of a relativistic heavy ion interacts with another heavy ion. The STAR collaboration presents a measurement of rho^0 and direct pi^+pi^- photoproduction in ultra-peripheral relativistic heavy ion collisions at sqrt(s_{NN})=200 GeV. We observe both exclusive photoproduction and photoproduction accompanied by mutual Coulomb excitation. We find a coherent cross-section of sigma(AuAu) -> Au^*Au^*rho^0 = 530 pm 19 (stat.) pm 57 (syst.) mb, in accord with theoretical calculations based on a Glauber approach, but considerably below the predictions of a color dipole model. The rho^0 transverse momentum spectrum (p_{T}^2) is fit by a double exponential curve including both coherent and incoherent coupling to the target nucleus/ we find sigma_{inc}/sigma_{coh} = 0.29 pm 0.03 (stat.) pm 0.08 (syst.). The ratio of direct pi^+pi^- to rho^0 production is comparable to that observed in gamma p collisions at HERA, and appears to be independent of photon energy. Finally, the measured rho^0 spin helicity matrix elements agree within errors with the expected s-channel helicity conservation.
ZDC spectra obtained with the minimum bias sample after the $\rho^{0}$ selection cuts are applied, and fit with three Gaussians. The east ZDC is shown on the left and the west ZDC is shown on the right. The ratio of numbers of candidates in the West ZDC of 1n:2n:3n is 1: 0.48 $\pm$ 0.03: 0.42 $\pm$ 0.03, while in the East ZDC, we find 1n:2n:3n is 1: 0.46 $\pm$ 0.03: 0.42 $\pm$ 0.03.

Results are presented on a measurement of the ttbar pair production cross section in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV from nine independent decay channels. The data were collected by the Dzero experiment during the 1992-1996 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. A total of 80 candidate events are observed with an expected background of 38.8 +- 3.3 events. For a top quark mass of 172.1 GeV/c^2, the measured cross section is 5.69 +- 1.21 (stat) +- 1.04 (sys) pb.

Muon-pair production has been measured in pCu, pU, OCu, OU and SU collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon. The cross sections are compatible with the atomic number dependence ( A proj. A targ. ) α where α =0.91±0.04 for the J/ψ resonance and α =1.01±0.04 for muon pairs produced in the mass continuum between 1.7 and 2.7 GeV/ c 2 .
