Invariant cross section. UPDATE (03 DEC 2018): systematic error of 4th bin for PT = 4.37 GEV/C corrected from 13.5 to 13.2, slight corrections to PT weighted averages (4.11 -> 4.12, 4.36 -> 4.37, 4.61 -> 4.62, 5.72 -> 5.71, 6.37 -> 6.36).

Invariant cross section. UPDATE (03 DEC 2018): slight corrections to PT weighted averages (5.20 -> 5.21, 5.70 -> 5.71, 6.32 -> 6.34).

The inclusive cross sections for production of prompt photons and π0s by 280 GeV/c protons incident on a liquid hydrogen target, have been measured forpT in the range 4.0 to 6.5 GeV/c and for |xF|<0.45. A quantitative comparison of the prompt photon cross section with next-to-leading order QCD predictions using Duke and Owens structure functions is performed. Phenomenological fits to the π0 and prompt photon cross sections are given.

Comparison of Exclusive Reactions at Large $T$

Cross sections or upper limits are reported for 12 meson-baryon and two baryon-baryon reactions for an incident momentum of 9.9 GeV/c, near 90° c.m.: π±p→pπ±,pp±,π+°±,K+Σ±, (Λ0/Σ0)K0; K±p→pK±; p±p→pp. By studying the flavor dependence of the different reactions, we have been able to isolate the quark-interchange mechanism as dominant over gluon exchange and quark-antiquark annihilation.

Shadowing in deep inelastic muon scattering from nuclear targets

Results are presented on the ratio of the inelastic muon-nucleus cross section per nucleon for carbon and calcium relative to that for deuterium. The measurements were made in the kinematic range of low x (0.003–0.1) and low Q 2 (0.3–3.2 GeV 2 ) at an incident muon energy of 280 GeV. The calcium to deuterium ratio shows a significant x dependence which is interpreted as a shadowing effect. No strong Q 2 dependence is observed. This suggests that the effect is due at least partially to parton interactions within the nucleus.
