We have searched for direct photons of low PT (≤1.0 GeV/c) at θc.m.=90° in pp collisions at √s =63 GeV. We used two independent methods: direct detection in NaI crystals and conversion to e+e− pairs. No signal is observed; the photon spectrum is well described by the decay of hadrons. The result is consistent with a direct low-PT photon signal reported at √s =12 GeV, but excludes a rapid growth of soft-photon production with √s .

Total cross sections have been measured for the transmission of long-lived neutral K mesons through hydrogen and deuterium. The momentum range for the KL0 was 130-550 MeV/c. The momentum of each detected kaon was measured by time of flight. The cross sections are consistent with earlier less precise results. Comparison of the KL0 cross sections is made with the results of several K-matrix fits to other K¯N data, and the KL0 total cross sections are compared with existing theoretical calculations for K−d total cross sections.
THE AUTHORS ADVISE AGAINST USING THESE CROSS SECTIONS WHEN COMBINING THEM WITH OTHER DATA SETS. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT ONE SHOULD USE INSTEAD THE ORIGINAL DATA POINTS FOR SINGLE-CHOPPED AND DOUBLE-CHOPPED INJECTION (WHICH HAVE SEPARATE NORMALIZATION ERRORS) FROM WHICH THESE COMBINED DATA ARE DERIVED. A NORMALIZATION ERROR FOR THESE AVERAGED CROSS SECTIONS IS THEREFORE NOT QUOTED.
We have determined the double inclusive cross-section for opposite-side high-pT photons and away-side jets withθγ≈θjet≈90° produced inpp collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings at\(\sqrt s= 63\) GeV. Under the assumption that these events arise predominantly from the QCD gluon Compton process we have calculated the gluon structure function in the range 0.15≦x≦0.30 at an average square of the four-momentum transfer of 40 GeV2/c2. The data favour a soft gluon distribution in the proton.

We have studied the processpp→γγ+X at\(\sqrt s= 63 GeV\) GeV in the central rapidity region. We report a positive signal at 96% C.L., a ratio γγ/e+e−=4.0±3.0 when the transverse momentum of each photon is above 2 GeV/c, and a cross-sectiondσ/dydMγγ=(5.5±2.7)×10−34 cm2/GeV when |y|<0.5,4<Mγγ<6 GeV.

We have conducted a search for bound states of a negative pion and a number of neutrons (pineuts) using the E814 spectrometer. A beam of Si28 at a momentum of 14.6A GeV/c was used to bombard targets of Al, Cu, Sn, and Pb. We describe our experimental technique, present measured upper limits for pineut production, and discuss the significance of our results.

An investigation of the production of neutron-rich isotopes from the fragmentation of Si28 projectiles at plab=14.6 GeV/c per nucleon was performed using the BNL-AGS-E814 spectrometer. We have measured the inclusive production cross sections of neutron-rich fragments (6He, He8, Li8, Li9, Be10, Be11, and B13). We have also measured the transverse momentum distributions for He6 and Li9, and the forward and transverse energy distributions associated with He6 production. The momentum distributions were analyzed in the context of the Goldhaber model. The question of whether the fragments are produced in the decay of the projectile following its electromagnetic excitation was also investigated.

Inclusive double differential multiplicities d2N/dy dpt and related quantities have been measured for protons and deuterons produced in 14.6A GeV/c Si+Al and Si+Pb collisions using the E814 forward spectrometer at the AGS at BNL. Collision ‘‘centrality’’ is determined by measuring Nc, the total charged particle multiplicity in the pseudorapidity range 0.85<η<3.8. For both systems Si + Al and Si + Pb, an increase in the proton rapidity distribution dN/dy at midrapidity and a corresponding decrease at higher rapidities are observed with increasing Nc. For Si+Pb, Boltzmann slope parameters TB increase significantly in the most central collisions. The measured distributions exhibit a centrality dependence even when σ/σgeo≲10%, where full overlap between the Si and Pb nuclei occurs in a simple geometric picture. The proton rapidity distribution dN/dy is presented for the symmetric system Si+Al over the entire rapididty interval. The total number of protons, which is the integral of this quantity over rapidity, varies with Nc. Results are compared with various model calculations, mostly using the hadronic cascade codes ARC and RQMD. No significant nuclear transparency is observed, indicating that large baryon and energy densities are produced in these collisions.

Events with a large transverse energy in a calorimeter with full azimuthal coverage and | y | < 0.9 have been investigated in pp collisions at √ s = 30, 45, and 63 GeV. A striking change in the event structure, corresponding to a clear emergence of high- p T jets, is observed at √ s = 63 and 45 GeV in the region between 25 and 35 GeV in transverse energy. At √ s = 30 GeV, the data extend to E T ∼ 20 GeV, but no such change in the event structure is observed.

Bose-Einstein correlations between pions produced in the central region of rapidity in αα, pp and p p interactions have been studied at the ISR. The parameters r and τ c -often interpreted as the radius and depth of the π-emitting region - are found to be independent of incident particle type but to depend on the mean charged multiplicity. In high multiplicity events, the pions appear to originate from a larger space-time region.
