We present data on energy-energy correlations (EEC) and their related asymmetry (AEEC) ine+e− annihilation in the centre of mass energy range 12<W≦46.8 GeV. The energy and angular dependence of the EEC in the central region is well described byOαs2 QCD plus a fragmentation term proportional to\({1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 {\sqrt s }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\sqrt s }}\). BareO(α)s2 QCD reproduces our data for the large angle region of the AEEC. Nonperturbative effects for the latter are estimated with the help of fragmentation models. From various analyses using different approximations, we find that values for\(\Lambda _{\overline {MS} } \) in the range 0.1–0.3 GeV give a good description of the data. We also compare analytical calculations in QCD for the EEC in the back-to-back region to our data. The theoretical predictions describe well both the angular and energy dependence of the data in the back-to-back region.

We report on an analysis of the multiplicity distributions of charged particles produced ine+e− annihilation into hadrons at c.m. energies between 14 and 46.8 GeV. The charged multiplicity distributions of the whole event and single hemisphere deviate significantly from the Poisson distribution but follow approximate KNO scaling. We have also studied the multiplicity distributions in various rapidity intervals and found that they can be well described by the negative binomial distribution only for small central intervals. We have also analysed forward-backward multiplicity correlations for different energies and selections of particle charge and shown that they can be understood in terms of the fragmentation properties of the different quark flavours and by the production and decay of resonances. These correlations are well reproduced by the Lund string model.

The production cross sections for the Λ, Σ0, Ξ−, Σ0 (1385), Ξ0 (1530) and Ω− hyperons have been measured, both in the continuum and in direct ϒ decays. Baryon rates in direct ϒ decays are enhanced by a factor of 2.5 or more compared to the continuum. Such a large baryon enhancement cannot be explained by standard fragmentation models. The strangeness suppression for baryons and mesons turns out to be the same. A strong suppression of spin 3/2 states is observed.

A high-precision measurement of the differential cross section for Bhabha scattering (e+e−→e+e−) is presented. The measurement was performed with the MAC detector at the PEP storage ring of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV. Effects due to electroweak interference are observed and agree well with the predictions of the Glashow-Salam-Weinberg model. The agreement between the data and the electroweak prediction rules out substructure of the electron up to mass scales of 1 TeV.

We report a high-precision measurement of the ratio R of the total cross section for e+e−→hadrons to that for e+e−→μ+μ−, at a center-of-mass energy of 29.0 GeV using the MAC detector. The result is R=3.96±0.09. This value of R is used to determine a value of the strong coupling constant αs of 0.23±0.06, nearly independent of fragmentation models. Two different analysis methods having quite different event-selection criteria have been used and the results are in agreement. Particular attention has been given to the study of systematic errors. New higher-order QED calculations are used for the luminosity determination and the acceptance for hadrons.

We have measured the process e+e−→μ+μ− at √s =29 GeV using the High Resolution Spectrometer at SLAC PEP. The forward-backward charge asymmetry is Aμμ=-(4.9±1.5±0.5)% based on 5057 events. A subsample of 3488 μ+μ− events in the angular range ‖cosθ‖<0.55 gives a cross-section ratio of Rμμ=0.990±0.017±0.030. The resulting couplings of the weak neutral current are gaegaμ=0.208±0.064± 0.021 and gvegvμ=0.027 ±0.051±0.089. The QED cutoff parameters are Λ+>170 GeV and Λ−>146 GeV at 95% C.L.

We have studied the production of prompt muons in hadronic events from e+e− annihilation at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV with the PEP4-TPC (Time Projection Chamber) detector. The muon p and pt distributions are well described by a combination of bottom- and charm-quark decays, with fitted semimuonic branching fractions of (15.2±1.9±1.2)% and (6.9±1.1±1.1)%, respectively. The muon spectra imply hard fragmentation functions for both b and c quarks, with 〈z(b quark)〉=0.80±0.05±0.05 and 〈z(c quark)〉=0.60±0.06±0.04. We derive neutral-current axial-vector couplings of a(b quark)=-0.9±1.1±0.3 and a(c quark)=1.5±1.5±0.5 from the forward-backward asymmetries.

After completion of the data taking for the νμ→ντ oscillation search, the CHORUS lead–scintillator calorimeter was used in the 1998 run as an active target. High-statistics samples of charged-current interactions were collected in the CERN SPS west area neutrino beam. This beam contained predominantly muon (anti-)neutrinos from sign-selected pions and kaons. We measure the flux and energy spectrum of the incident neutrinos and compare them with beam simulations. The neutrino–nucleon and anti-neutrino–nucleon differential cross-sections are measured in the range 0.01<x<0.7 , 0.05<y<0.95 , 10<Eν<200 GeV . We extract the neutrino–nucleon structure functions F2(x,Q2) , xF3(x,Q2) , and R(x,Q2) and compare these with results from other experiments.

Final data measured with the EMC forward spectrometer are presented on the production of forward charged hadrons in μp and μd scattering at incident beam energies between 100 and 280 GeV. The large statistic of 373 000 events allows a study of the semi-inclusive hadron production as a function ofz,pT2 and 〈pT2〉 in smallQ2,xBj andW bins. Charge multiplicity ratios and differences as a function ofz andxBj are given forp, d andn-targets. From the differences of charge multiplicities the ratio of the valence quark distributions of the protondv(x)/uv(x) is determined for the first time in charged lepton scattering. The Gronau et al. sum rule is tested, the measured sum being 0.31±0.06 stat. ±0.05 syst., compared with the theoretical expectation of 2/7≈0.286. A high-statistics measurement has been made of the process e+e−→μ+μ− at s=29 GeV with the MAC detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The electroweak forward-backward charge asymmetry for a sample of approximately 16 000 events was measured to be Aμμ=−0.063±0.008±0.002. In this paper an investigation of the production of D ∗ ± mesons produced in e + e − collisions at energies around the Z 0 pole is presented. Based on 115 D ∗ ± mesons with x D∗ 2E D ∗ /E cm > 0.2 the properties of D ∗ mesons produced in the reaction Z 0 → c c are studied. Fixing the yield and the fragmentation function of bottom quarks to the values obtained at LEP using lepton tags, and average energy fraction of the D ∗ ± mesons from primary charmed quarks of 〈x c → D ∗ 〉 = 0.52 ± 0.03 +- 0.01 is found and Γ z 0 →c c = (323 ± 61 ± 35) MeV is determined. We report results from two new methods for measuring the total production of charmed particles in nonresonant e+e− annihilations at √s =10.5 GeV. The rate for detection of events containing two reconstructed charmed mesons relative to that for events containing one is used to extract information about total charm production independent of decay branching fractions. The value of ΔRcc¯, the total charm-pair cross section normalized to the pointlike μ-pair cross section, is found to be 1.13−0.13+0.17±0.09, under an assumption of limited particle correlations. In an independent analysis the inclusive cross section for e+e−→qq¯→e±X is measured to be 0.293±0.017±0.017 nb. Using measured relative production rates and semileptonic branching fractions of D0 and D+ mesons and estimates of these quantities for Ds and Λc, this is found to correspond to ΔRcc¯=2.07±0.12±0.26. These two measurements are discussed in the context of measurements made by reconstruction of exclusive hadronic decay modes and of theoretical expectations.

Results are reported concerning the charged-particle multiplicity distribution obtained in an exposure of the high-resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC to a beam of 800 GeV protons at the Fermilab MPS. This is the first time that such data have been available at this energy. The distribution of the number n ch of charged particles produced in inelastic interactions obeys KNO-scaling. The average multiplicity is 〈 n ch 〉 = 10.26±0.15. For n ch ⩾8 the data can be well fitted to a negative binomial. The difference between the overall experimental multiplicity distribution and that resulting from the latter fit is in agreement with the contribution expected from diffractive processes.

The energy distribution of inclusive hadrons produced by 280 GeV muons on hydrogen and deuterium targets are compared. The sum of the scaled energy distributions of the positive and negative hadrons is found to be the same for the two targets. The net charge of the hadronic jet is positive at highx even in the case when the scattering takes place on the neutron. Inclusive Ω− production in e+e− annihilation at 29 GeV has been measured with the Mark II detector. From an integrated luminosity of 207 pb−1, we determine a production rate of 0.014±0.006±0.004 Ω−, Ω¯+ per hadronic event. This is roughly 35 times the Lund-model prediction of 0.0004 Ω−, Ω¯+ per hadronic event, but comparable to the Webber-model prediction of 0.006 Ω−, Ω¯+ per hadronic event. The large rate of Ω− production, compared with production rates for other baryons, and with theoretical predictions based on diquark models, indicates that spin suppression does not hold for Ω− production.

Hadroproduction of the Jψ and ψ′ states has been studied in 300-GeV/c proton, antiproton, and π±Li interactions. Both total and differential cross sections in xF and pT have been measured for the Jψ for the π±, proton, and antiproton interactions. The ratio of ψ′ to Jψ production has been determined for the four types of beam particles.

Total cross sections for Sigma- and pi- on beryllium, carbon, polyethylene and copper as well as total cross sections for protons on beryllium and carbon have been measured in a broad momentum range around 600GeV/c. These measurements were performed with a transmission technique adapted to the SELEX hyperon-beam experiment at Fermilab. We report on results obtained for hadron-nucleus cross sections and on results for sigma_tot(Sigma- N) and sigma_tot(pi- N), which were deduced from nuclear cross sections.
Results for nuclear total cross sections.
Average total cross sections for nucleon targets deduced from the nuclear target data, at the average beam momentum.
Yields and phase space distributions of φ -mesons emitted from p+p (minimum bias trigger), p+Pb (at various centralities) and central Pb+Pb collisions are reported ( E beam =158 A GeV). The decay φ →K + K − was used for identification. The φ / π ratio is found to increase by a factor of 3.0±0.7 from inelastic p+p to central Pb+Pb. Significant enhancement in this ratio is also observed in subclasses of p+p events (characterized by high charged-particle multiplicity) as well as in the forward hemisphere of central p+Pb collisions. In Pb+Pb no shift or significant broadening of the φ -peak is seen.
Transverse mass distribution for PHI mesons produced in PB PB collisions averaged over the rapidity region 3.0 to 3.8.
Transverse mass distribution for PHI mesons produced in P P collisions averaged over the rapidity region 2.9 to 4.5.
Rapidity distributions for PHI mesons produced in PB PB collisions.
We have measured the B hadron energy distribution in Z0 decays using a sample of semi-leptonic B decays recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC. The energy of each tagged B hadron was reconstructed using information from the lepton and a partially reconstructed charm-decay vertex. We compared the scaled energy distribution with several models of heavy quark fragmentation. The average scaled energy of primary B hadrons was found to be <x_E_B> = 0.716 +- 0.011 (stat.) +0.022 -0.021 (syst.).
Bin center values for X are given.

The highest-energy measurement of ΔσL(pp) and the first ever measurement of ΔσL(p¯p), the differences between proton-proton and antiproton-proton total cross sections for pure longitudinal spin states, are described. Data were taken using 200-GeV/c polarized beams incident on a polarized-proton target. The results are measured to be ΔσL(pp)=−42±48(stat)±53(syst) μb and ΔσL(p¯p)=−256±124(stat)±109(syst) μb. Many tests of systematic effects were investigated and are described, and a comparison to theoretical predictions is also given. Measurements of parity nonconservation at 200 GeV/c in proton scattering and the first ever of antiproton scattering have also been derived from these data. The values are consistent with zero at the 10−5 level.

We present a comparison of the strong couplings of light ($u$, $d$, and $s$), $c$, and $b$ quarks determined from multijet rates in flavor-tagged samples of hadronic $Z~0$ decays recorded with the SLC Large Detector at the SLAC Linear Collider. Flavor separation on the basis of lifetime and decay multiplicity differences among hadrons containing light, $c$, and $b$ quarks was made using the SLD precision tracking system. We find: $\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~{uds}/{\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~{\rm all}} = 0.987 \pm 0.027({\rm stat}) \pm 0.022({\rm syst}) \pm 0.022({\rm theory})$, $\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~c/{\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~{\rm all}} = 1.012 \pm 0.104 \pm 0.102 \pm 0.096$, and $\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~b/{\alpha_s{_{\vphantom{y}}}~{\rm all}} = 1.026 \pm 0.041 \pm 0.041\pm 0.030.$

We present the xF and pT differential cross sections of J/ψ and ψ′, respectively, in the ranges −0.05<xF<0.25 and pT<3.5 GeV/c. The data samples are constituted by about 12 000 J/ψ and 200 ψ′ produced in proton-silicon interactions at 800 GeV/c and decaying into opposite sign muons. The xF and pT distributions are compared with recent results from experiments E789 at the same energy and to leading order QCD predictions using the MRS D0 parametrization for the parton structure function. The measured shapes of the differential cross sections, except for the dσ/dxF at small xF, agree very well with the prediction, even though their value is quite a bit larger than the prediction. We also present the cosθ differential cross section of the J/ψ which indicates unpolarized production in contrast with color octet models predictions.

The analyzing power AN of proton-proton elastic scattering in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region has been measured using the 200-GeV/c Fermilab polarized proton beam. A theoretically predicted interference between the hadronic non-spin-flip amplitude and the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude is shown for the first time to be present at high energies in the region of 1.5 × 10−3 to 5.0 × 10−2 (GeV/c)2 four-momentum transfer squared, and our results are analyzed in connection with theoretical calculations. In addition, the role of possible contributions of the hadronic spin-flip amplitude is discussed.
