The properties of the diffractive peak observed in the mass spectra of systems recoiling against observed high-momentum protons emerging from pp collisions at the CERN ISR have been investigated. The cross sections in this peak have been found to have a steep t dependence which flattens out as | t | increases. The high mass side of the peak varies approximately as 1/ M 2 (where M is the missing mass of the recoiling system) and scales well in terms of the variable M 2 / s . The position of the maximum has been observed to move to lower values of M 2 / s as the kinematic boundary of this variable decreases with increasing s . The measured cross sections, integrated up to M 2 / s =0.05, rise by (15±5)% over the s range 549 to 1464 GeV 2 .

Experimental Evidence for Structures in the Momentum Dependence of the n + p --> p + n Charge-Exchange Peak Between 1-GeV/c and 2-GeV/c

Inspire Record 615 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.7809

21 differential cross section measurements of the np → pn charge-exchange reaction have been carried out at the synchrotron Saturne (Saclay), for incident neutron momenta between 1 and 2 GeV/ c and in the squared four-momentum transfer range 0 ⩽ −t ⩽ 0.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The π exchange peak is seen at all the incident momenta. The s dependence of the very forward slope of this peak shows weak structures near the threshold of inelastic channels.

Correlations Associated with Particles Produced at Small Angles in p p Collisions at the CERN ISR

Data on correlations between momentum analysed protons, pions or K mesons, and charged particles produced in pp collisions at the CERN ISR are presented. The charged particles were detected in a ∼4 π scintillation counter hodoscope. The pseudo-rapidity distributions are well described by production within the limits of cylindrical phase space, with negative kaons and antiprotons yielding narrower distributions than protons, pions and positive kaons. The azimuthal distributions show symmetry around the t -channel axis in the rest frame of the recoiling mass M x in pp → aX (a = detected proton, pion, positive kaon).

Production of Multi - Pion Systems With Large Longitudinal Momentum at the {CERN} {ISR}

Inclusive cross sections are presented for 2π and 3π systems with large longitudinal x at the highest intersecting storage ring energies (s=53 GeV for 2π; s=53 and 62 GeV for 3π). The ratio π+π−π−π− rises sharply with increasing x similar to the ratio K+K−, as expected in a quark-model interpretation.

Measurement of Differential Cross-Sections for Radiative Pion-Proton Capture in the Second Resonance Region

Inspire Record 2234 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.36075

Differential cross-section measurements for π − p → γ n, consisting of three angular distributions at 618, 676 and 718 MeV/ c , and the energy dependence at θ γ = 90° for seven incident pion momenta between 502 and 888 MeV/ c , are presented. Our data qualitatively support recent multipole analyses. Agreement with the Scheffler et al. results for the inverse reaction, γ n → π − p, using a ( π − -recoil p) coincidence technique is good excluding a large violation of time reversal invariance. The agreement with γ n → π − p data obtained using the R ( π − / π + ) ratio technique or a deuterium bubble chamber is only qualitative.
