Observation of orbitally excited B mesons

The DELPHI collaboration Abreu, P. ; Adam, W. ; Adye, T. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 345 (1995) 598-608, 1995.
Inspire Record 382208 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.48321

Experimental evidence for the existence of orbitally excited B meson states is presented in an analysis of the Bπ and B ∗ π distribution of Q = m(B ∗∗ ) − m(B (∗) ) − m(π) using Z 0 decay data taken with the DELPHI detector at LEP. The mean Q-value of the decays B ∗∗ → B (∗) π is measured to be 284 ± 5 (stat.) ± 15 (syst.) MeV/c 2 , and the Gaussian width of the signal is 79 ± 5 (stat.) ± 8 (syst.) MeV/c 2 . This signal can be described as a single resonance of mass m = 5732 ± 5 (stat.) ± 20 (syst.) MeV/c 2 and full width Γ = 145 ± 28 MeV/c 2 . The observed shape is also consistent with the production of several broad and narrow states as predicted by the quark model and partly observed in the D-meson sector. The production rate of B ∗∗ per b-jet is found to be 0.27 ± 0.02 (stat.) ± 0.06 (syst.).

The Beijing Spectrometer (BES) experiment has observed purely leptonic decays of the Ds meson in the reaction e+e−→Ds+Ds− at a c.m. energy of 4.03 GeV. Three events are observed in which one Ds decays hadronically to φπ, K¯*0K, or K¯0K, and the other decays leptonically to μνμ or τντ. With the assumption of μ−τ universality, values of the branching fraction, B(Ds→μνμ)=(1.5−0.6−0.2+1.3+0.3)%, and the Ds pseudoscalar decay constant, fDs=(4.3−1.3−0.4+1.5+0.4)×102 MeV, are obtained.

We have measured differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of charged pions from H3 and He3 into the backward hemisphere. Near the peak of the delta resonance, at Tπ=180 MeV, an angular distribution covering 114° to 168° in the laboratory extends our earlier measurements. At Tπ=142, 180, 220, and 256 MeV, we have measured an excitation function at angles approaching 170°. The cross sections for the reactions He3(π+,π+)3He, H3(π−,π−)3H show a rise at back angles which is not seen for He3(π−,π−)3He and H3(π+,π+)3H. There is a dip in the cross sections near 130° for Tπ=180 MeV.

eta meson photoproduction on hydrogen near threshold

Price, J.W. ; Anton, G. ; Arends, J. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.C 51 (1995) R2283-R2287, 1995.
Inspire Record 405009 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.25882

The total cross section for γp→ηp near threshold has been measured using the PHOENICS tagging system at the ELSA electron facility of the Physikalisches Institut der Universität Bonn. The photons are created by bremsstrahlung, and are tagged by measuring the momentum of each electron after the photon has been emitted. The recoil proton from γp→ηp is detected by the AMADEUS counter setup in coincidence with the tagging system. Data were taken with AMADEUS at 3.3° in the laboratory, where the large Jacobian increases our event rate so that we obtain the cross section from threshold (Eγ=707.2 MeV) to Eγ≃720 MeV with adequate statistics. The γp→ηp events are identified by kinematics, dE/dx, and timing information. We find that in our energy region the production cross section is consistent with S-wave production.

Production of charged particles, K0(s), K+-, p and Lambda in Z --> b anti-b events and in the decay of b hadrons

A sample of events enriched in bb̄ quark pairs was selected in the data recorded by the DELPHI experiment at LEP during 1992 and 1993, by the presence of secondary decay vertices from short-lived particles. Using this sample, the average multiplicities of K s 0 , K ± , p(p̄), Λ( Λ ) and of charged particles in bb̄ events have been measured, distinguishing the component from fragmentation and the component coming from the decay of b-hadrons. The measurement of the average charge multiplicity in bb̄ events was used to compute the mean fractional beam energy carried by the primary b-hadron, and the difference in charged particle multiplicity between bb̄ events and light quark (uū, dd̄, ss̄) events.

We have used 19 pb**-1 of data collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab to search for new particles decaying to dijets. We exclude at 95% confidence level models containing the following new particles: axigluons with mass between 200 and 870 GeV, excited quarks with mass between 80 and 570 GeV, and color octet technirhos with mass between 320 and 480 GeV.

Inspire Record 392228 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.47094

We have observed five new decay modes of the charmed baryon Λc+ using data collected with the CLEO II detector. Four decay modes, Λc+→pK¯0η, Ληπ+, Σ+η, and Σ*+η, are first observations of final states with an η meson, while the fifth mode, Λc+→ΛK¯0K+, requires the creation of an ss¯ quark pair. We measure the branching fractions of these modes relative to Λc+→pK−π+ to be 0.25±0.04±0.04, 0.35±0.05±0.06, 0.11±0.03±0.02, 0.17±0.04±0.03, and 0.12±0.02±0.02, respectively.

Inspire Record 394716 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.47953

A study of the production of strange octet and decuplet baryons in hadronic decays of the Z recorded by the DELPHI detector at LEP is presented. This includes the first measurement of the∑± average multiplicity. The total and differential cross sections, the event topology and the baryon-antibaryon correlations are compared with current hadronization models.

Measurements of the tau polarization in Z0 decays

The DELPHI collaboration Abreu, P. ; Adam, W. ; Adye, T. ; et al.
Z.Phys.C 67 (1995) 183-202, 1995.
Inspire Record 393793 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.47961

A sample of Z0→τ+τ− events observed in the DELPHI detector at LEP in 1991 and 1992 is analysed to measure the τ polarisation in the exclusive decay channels\(ev\bar v\),\(\mu v\bar v\), πν, ρν and a1ν. The τ polarisation is also measured with an inclusive hadronic analysis which benefits from a higher efficiency and a better systematic precision than the use of the exclusive decay modes. The results have been combined with those published on the 1990 data. A measurement of the τ polarisation as a function of production angle yields the values for the mean τ polarisation 〈P〉τ=−0.148±0.022 and for the Z0 polarisationPZ=−0.136±0.027. These results are used to determine the ratio of vector to axial-vector effective couplings for taus\(\bar v_\tau/\bar a_\tau= 0.074 \pm 0.011\), and for electrons\(\bar v_e /\bar a_e= 0.068 \pm 0.014\), compatible with e-τ universality. With the assumption of lepton universality, the ratio of vector to axial-vector effective couplings for leptons\(\bar v_l /\bar a_l= 0.072 \pm 0.008\) is obtained, implying a value of the effective weak mixing angle sin2θefflept=0.2320±0.0021.
