An extensive investigation of antiproton-proton interactions at 5.7 GeV/c without strange-particle production was carried out using a hydrogen bubble chamber. Cross-sections for different channels are given and discussed. The reliability of the analysis was checked using artificially generated events. The cross-sections for elastic scattering, for all processes involving annihilation, and for all other inelastic processes are respectively σel=(16.3±0.6)mb,σannlbil=(22.5±2.0)mb, σinel=(24.8±2.0)mb. TheN * 1:38 is present both in the single and multiple pion production channels. For the reaction MediaObjects/11539_2007_Article_BF02720569_f1.jpg a cross-section of (1.05±0.21) mb was obtained. Cross-sections forN * 1238 production in other channels are also given. Some indication of the presence ofI=1/2 isobars was found in the nucleon-pion and the nucleon-two-pion systems. The inelastic nonannihilation reactions were found to be strongly peripheral. The one-pion exchange model including either a form factor or corrections for absorption was applied to the reaction MediaObjects/11539_2007_Article_BF02720569_f2.jpg . Neither version of the model could correctly account for all features of the reaction. The average number of pions in the annihilation was found to be 7.3±0.6. The presence of an asymmetry in the angular distribution of the charged pions was confirmed at this energy; it is due mostly to high-energy pions. The production of ρ and ω mesons was observed in various annihilation channels. Rates of up to 80% for ρ production and up to 15% for ω production were obtained by fitting phase-space and Breit-Wigner curves to the effective-mass distributions of different channels.

We present a measurement of the elastic differential cross section $d\sigma(p\bar{p}\rightarrow p\bar{p})/dt$ as a function of the four-momentum-transfer squared t. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $\approx 31 nb^{-1}$ collected with the D0 detector using dedicated Tevatron $p\bar{p} $ Collider operating conditions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and covers the range $0.26 <|t|< 1.2 GeV^2$. For $|t|<0.6 GeV^2$, d\sigma/dt is described by an exponential function of the form $Ae^{-b|t|}$ with a slope parameter $ b = 16.86 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.20(syst) GeV^{-2}$. A change in slope is observed at $|t| \approx 0.6 GeV^2$, followed by a more gradual |t| dependence with increasing values of |t|.
The $d\sigma$/$dt$ differential cross section. The statistical and systematic uncertainties are added in quadrature.
Differential cross sections for p p elastic scattering have been measured for very small momentum transfers at six different incident antiproton momenta in the range 3.7 to 6.2 GeV/c by the detection of recoil protons at scattering angles close to 90°. Forward scattering parameters σ T , b , and ϱ have been determined. For the ϱ-parameter, up to an order of magnitude higher level of precision has been achieved compared to that in earlier experiments. It is found that existing dispersion theory predictions are in disagreement with our results for the ϱ-parameter.

The differential cross section for antiproton-proton elastic scattering has been measured for the beam momenta between 180 and 600 MeV/c. The real-to-imaginary ratio of the forward elastic scattering amplitude is derived from the Coulomb-nuclear interference. The ratio is found to be close to zero between 180 and 500 MeV/c with a minimum ofρ=−0.14 at 260 MeV/c. This result is contrary to model predictions. The phase shifts for thes-,p- andd-waves are extracted. The partial wave compositions of the elastic and inelastic cross sections have been determined. A large contribution of thep-wave is identified in the antiproton-proton interactions at small momenta.

The high antiproton-proton luminosity obtained by using a target system consisting of a hydrogen gas-jet crossing a coasting beam of cooled antiproton circulating in one of the rings of CERN's ISR provides the possibility to measure low cross section reactions with very high precision. We present measurements of the antiproton-proton elastic cross section at 90° CM at incident momenta between 3.5 GeV/ c and 5.7 GeV/ c . The precision of these measurements is much higher than previously reported results. The data show that the cross section of this reaction decreases faster than s −12 over this momentum range.

We report results from a measurement of antiproton-proton and proton-proton small-angle elastic scattering at √ s = 24.3 GeV in the range 0.001 ⩽ | t | ⩽ 0.06 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The measurement was performed at the CERN p p Collider by using silicon detectors to observe protons recoiling from a hydrogen cluster-jet target intercepting the stored p and p beams. Fits to the measured differential cross sections yield the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward nuclear scattering amplitude ρ and the nuclear slope parameter b for both p p and pp. We find that the difference Δρ = ρ ( p p ) − ρ( pp ) = 0.031 ± 0.010 agrees with conventional fits and disagrees with the “odderon” fit designed to accommodate the recent UA4 measurement of ρ( p p) at 546 GeV.

Two high statistics measurements of antiproton-proton small-angle elastic scattering, at p = 233 MeV/ c and p = 272 MeV/ c , are presented. The measurements were carried out at the LEAR facility at CERN. By the Coulomb-nuclear interference method, values are obtained for the real-to-imaginary ratio ρ of the p̄p forward nuclear scattering amplitude and for its exponential slope b : ρ = + 0.041 ± 0.026 and b = 71.5 ± 4.5 (GeV/ c ) −2 at 233 MeV/ c and ρ = −0.014 ± 0.027 and b = 47.7 ± 2.7 (GeV/ c ) −2 at 272 MeV/ c . The method to derive these values is discussed in detail and so are the uncertainties contributing to their systematic error. A detailed account is given of high-precision measurements of the total hadronic cross sections of proton-antiproton and proton-proton interactions at centre-of-mass energies of 30.6, 52.8 and 62.7 GeV. The experiment was performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) using the total interaction-rate method, in which additive correction terms for trigger losses were held to less than 6% of the final result. An experimental determination of the vertical beam-displacement scale permitted luminosity-monitor calibrations to be made with high intrinsic accuracy. The overall precision (systematic and statistical errors combined) achieved in the total cross sections was ± 1.1% for proton-antiproton reactions and 0.7% for proton-proton reactions. In the proton-proton case the measurement was the most precise such measurement made at the ISR.

Antiproton-proton and proton-proton small-angle elastic scattering have been measured for centre-of-mass energies √ s = 30.7 and 62.5 GeV at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Antiproton-proton and proton-proton total cross sections are obtained using the optical theorem. The measurement of the Coulomb scattering and its interference with the nuclear scattering allows a determination of the ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the forward nuclear scattering amplitude. Also presented are measurements for the nuclear slope parameter at √ s = 62.5 GeV. Our new results reinforce the conclusions drawn recently from our measurements at √ s = 52.8 GeV. In particular, the pp̄ total cross section is rising at ISR energies and should continue to rise well beyond these energies.

Proton-antiproton and proton-proton elastic scattering have been measured in the four-momentum transfer range 0.001⩽| t |⩽0.06 GeV 2 for center-of-mass energy 52.8 GeV at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). Using the known pp total cross section, a simultaneous fit to the pp̄ and pp differential cross sections yields the pp̄ total cross section; in addition, we obtain the ratio of the real-to-imaginary part of the forward nuclear-scattering amplitude and the nuclear-slope parameter for both pp̄ and pp. Our results show conclusively that the pp̄ total cross section is rising at ISR energies and lend support to conventional theories in which the difference between the pp̄ and pp total cross section vanishes at very high energy.

A description is given of an experiment to study elastic scattering of π ± , K ± and p on protons at c.m. scattering angles from 45° to 100° at incident laboratory momenta 20 GeV/ c and 30 GeV/ c . The corresponding t range is from −6.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 to −28 (GeV/ c ) 2 . There are no previous observations for these reactions in this t range. High intensity and large geometrical acceptance were required in order to measure the low cross sections. The experiment used a double-arm spectrometer. MWPCs were used for reconstruction, and threshold and differential Čerenkov counters for identification. Scintillation counters, Čerenkov counters and a hadron calorimeter were used in the trigger. The trigger logic utilized specially designed matrices and a hard wired microprocessor. The π − p elastic scattering cross sections follow approximately the dimensional counting rule from 3.5 GeV/ c .and up to 30 GeV/ c . The cross sections decrease by seven orders of magnitude in this energy range. The data is compared to quark models. None of these models give a comprehensive description of the results. However, some modifications to these models improve their consistency with the data.

We measured the differential cross section for p̄p and pp elastic scattering in the momentum-transfer range 0.01 <| t | < 1.0 GeV 2 at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings with center-of-mass energy s = 52.8 GeV . The elastic and inelastic\(\bar p\)p cross sections at 70 GeV/c have been determined in an experiment performed at CERN using BEBC equipped with a TST. The topological cross sections were measured and the moments of the inelastic multiplicity distribution are 〈nc〉=6.16±0.09, 〈nc〉/D=2.04±0.05 andf2cc=2.97±0.03. The average number of Dalitz pairs per inelastic event is (3.12±0.09)×10−2. Assuming that these all arise from π0 decay the average π0 multiplicity is\(\langle n_{\pi ^0 } \rangle= 2.71 \pm 0.14\). The\(\bar p\)p−pp cross section differences lead to an annihilation cross section σA = 4.42±0.41 mb and the moments of the annihilation multiplicty distribution are 〈nA〉=8.0±0.3, 〈nA〉/D=2.5±0.2 andf2A−−=−1.4±0.3. An independent check of σA was made by investigating fast forward charged and neutral secondary interactions in the TST and in the surrounding neon-hydrogen mixture, and gives a value σA = 5.0±1.6 mb. The ratio of fast\(\bar n\) to\(\bar p\) production in non-annihilation interactions at 70 GeV/c is found to be 0.45±0.11.

We present differential cross-sections for pp elastic scattering at eight laboratory momenta from 1.50 to 2.06 GeV/c. The data are analysed using an 8-parameter optical modelà la Frahn and Venter. However, the best representation of the differential cross-sections is obtained by combining the glory model with a parametrization of the scattering amplitude in terms of coherent exponentials. Both representations show the dominance of the partial wave with orbital angular momentum equal to four.

The π−p data show rich structure at 8 GeV/c, indicative of strong non-Pomeron contributions, while the 16-GeV/c data are much smoother. For −t≳1 (GeV/c)2 there is a strong s dependence while there is very little for −t<1 (GeV/c)2. For p¯p scattering the forward region is smoothly diffractive for −t<0.4 (GeV/c)2 and shows antishrinkage. The exponential slope parameter b is measured to be 12.36 ± 0.04 (GeV/c)−2 at 8 GeV/c and 11.40 ± 0.04 (GeV/c)−2 at 16 GeV/c. The structure near −t=0.6 (GeV/c)2 seen at lower energies is still obvious at 16 GeV/c. The K−p data show some structure at 8 GeV/c, but can be represented adequately by a quadratic exponential form. At 16 GeV/c the K−p angular distribution shows antishrinkage and lies above the 8-GeV/c cross section for 0.11<−t<0.8 (GeV/c)2.
