Approximately 60 000 events have been collected in a spark chamber experiment at the CERN Proton Synchrotron which studied elastic diffraction scattering of π--p and p-p at incident momenta of 8.5, 12.4 and 18.4 GeV/c and of π+-p at 8.5 and 12.4 GeV/c. Magnetic analysis of the incoming and diffraction scattered particle, together with measurement of all angles, permitted each event to be determined as elastic subject to three constraints, so that the inelastic background was rejected with. high efficiency, even at the larger momentum, transfers. Much of the data have been processed by the CERN Automatic Flying-Spot DigitizerHPD. A detailed description of the experimental technique and of the methods of analysis is given. The results, together with data from lower energies, confirm the remarkable energy-independence of the shape of the pion-proton diffraction scattering peak up to |t| = 1.5 (GeV/c)2, wheret is the square of the four-momentum transfer, over a range of pion energies from 2 to 18 GeV. Proton-proton scattering does however appear to show a shrinking diffraction peak. In general, the data agree with other experiments using both counter and bubble chamber techniques, but some differences do appear. During the experiment, data were taken which set an upper limit of 2·102 μb/(GeV/c)2 on the differential elastic cross-section dσ/dt over a range of |t| from 20.9 to 23.4 (GeV/c)2 at 13.4 GeV/c incident pion momentum.

Study of the k0 lambda and k0 sigma0 final states from pi- p interactions at 3.9 gev/c

Nucl.Phys.B 27 (1971) 477-485, 1971.
Inspire Record 68729 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.33623

Differential cross sections and polarizations have been measured for the reaction π − p → K 0 Λ and π − p → K 0 Σ 0 at 3.9 GeV/ c π − momentum. Comparison of these data with those of the related reactions K − n → π − Λ and K − p → π − Σ + (at approximately the same c.m. energy) indicate that simple Regge-pole models involving only K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) exchange are unable to describe all the features of the data. On the other hand, comparison of the π − p → K 0 Σ 0 data with that of π + p → K + Σ + shows that the data are consistent with absence of exotic strange-meson exchange.

Backward rho+ production in pi+ p reactions at 5.2 gev/c

Phys.Lett.B 33 (1970) 502-504, 1970.
Inspire Record 69380 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.28538

Using wire spark chambers we have observed the backward production of ϱ + mesons in the reaction π + p → p (missing mass) at 5.2 GeV/ c . In the four-momentum interval −0.80 < u < −0.006 (GeV/ c ) 2 the angular distribution shows a backward peak. In contrast to backward π + p elastic scattering, there is no dip in the angular distribution at u ≈ −0.15 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The ϱ + decay is found to be compatible with isotropy.

Nucl.Phys.B 36 (1972) 363-372, 1972.
Inspire Record 67685 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.33005

We have measured the production and decay angular distributions of the reaction π + p→ π O Δ ++ at 13.1 GeV/ c incident momentum. For − t > 0.1 (GeV/ c ) 2 the data is well described by M1 ϱ-exchange models, the best results being obtained from a weak cut model with a wrong signature nonsense zero. For − t < 0.1 (GeV/c) 2 there is evidence for the existence of other exchange mechanisms.

The differential cross-section for 5 GeV/ cπ + p and π − p elastic scattering have been measured in the c.m. angular region 27° < θ cm < 130° corresponding to 0.5 < | t | < 7.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Dips are observed in both reactions at − t = 2.8 and 4.8 (GeV/ c ) 2 where the cross-sections are approximately 0.1 μ b/(GeV/ c ) 2 .

Study of four-prong events in pi+ p interactions at 3.5 gev/c

Ronat, E.E. ; Eisenberg, Y. ; Lyons, L. ; et al.
Nucl.Phys.B 38 (1972) 20-36, 1972.
Inspire Record 75333 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.32958

The non-strange four-prong events of π + p interactions at 3.5 GeV/ c are studied. Cross sections are calculated for all resonance productions in the channels π + p → p π + π + π − ( σ T = 3.18 ± 0.13 mb) and π + p → p π + π + π − π o ( σ T = 4.03 ± 0.16 mb). The dominant two body reactions Δ ++ ϱ o and Δ ++ ω o are investigated in detail, and production and decay distributions are presented as well as joint decay density matrix elements and joint correlation terms. The Δ ++ ϱ o reaction is compared to predictions of OPE with absorption and the Δ ++ ω o is compared to rho-exchange with sharp cutoff.

K0(s) k- decay of a2- produced by 20.3-gev/c pi- on hydrogen

Phys.Rev.D 6 (1972) 747-756, 1972.

We present the results of an analysis of data for the reaction π−p→KS0K−p at 20.3-GeV/c incident π momentum. We find that the K0K− effective-mass spectrum shows a single peak in the A2 region which is well fitted by a Breit-Wigner shape. The data in the A2-peak region are inconsistent with the split-A2 shape reported earlier. The distribution in t of the A2 events shows a forward dip followed by an exponential falloff. The A2 decay angular distribution is well fitted by a single resonance with quantum numbers JP=2+. The results of an analysis of the density-matrix elements for this reaction are given.

A study of π − p → K ∗ Λ and π − p → K ∗ Σ° at 3.9 GeV /c indicates that the main features of both reactions can be interpreted in terms of simple exchange processes, the first involving both natural and unnatural exchange, the second showing evidence for natural parity exchange only.

Neutral associated production by 8, 10.7 and 15.7 gev/c pi- incident on protons

Foley, K.J. ; Love, W.A. ; Ozaki, S. ; et al.
Phys.Rev.D 8 (1973) 27-38, 1973.
Inspire Record 81979 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.22059

We present differential and total cross sections for two reactions: π−p→K0Λ and π−p→K0Σ0. The incident pion momenta were 8, 10.7, and 15.7 GeVc. The results are based on an analysis of approximately 22 600 events of the two reactions where the π+ and π− from the decay of the KS0 were detected in the forward leg of the Double Vee Magnetic Spectrometer. The separation of Λ recoils from Σ0 recoils was accomplished by the missing-mass technique.
