Results are presented from an experiment designed to make the first systematic study of the depolarization parameter in elastic proton-proton scattering at high energies. Measurements were made at 3.0 and 6.0 GeV/c at |t| values extending to 1.7 (GeV/c)2 at the higher momentum. A high-intensity unpolarized proton beam was incident on a polarized proton target and the polarization of the elastically scattered recoil protons was determined with a carbon analyzer. The results are discussed in the framework of optical and exchange models.

Differential cross sections for p−p elastic scattering are presented with scattering angles in the center-of-mass system greater than 35° to 50°. The data were obtained at incident laboratory momenta 0.857, 1.091, 1.210, 1.374, 1.405, and 1.501 GeV/c. This spans the region of the onset of Δ(1236) production and where a possible spin-singlet D-wave resonance is indicated in an analysis of earlier data.

Λp interactions have been studied at momenta up to 24 GeV/ c using a new bubble chamber technique. We find that the Λp elastic cross section has fallen to approximately 6 mb at the highest momentum. Results are presented on Λ p→ Λ p π + π − for the first time above 5 GeV c .

ESTIMATE.
We introduce a novel technique for the investigation of neutron-proton interactions in a bubble chamber, based on the tagging of neutrons by their interactions, which has made possible the absolute normalization of the neutron beams in two experiments. In addition, measurements have been made on elastic scattering and inclusive cross sections which have been largely inaccessible to existing bubble chamber techniques.

A regeneration experiment exploring KS−KL interference in the decay modes KS,L→π+π− and KS,L→π±l∓ν (l=μ or e) has been performed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory alternating-gradient synchrotron. The regeneration phases in carbon obtained from the time-dependent charge asymmetry of the Ke3 and Kμ3 modes are in good agreement and yield a combined result ϕf≡argi[f(0)−f(0)]=−40.9°±2.6° at the average K0 momentum of 7.5 GeV/c.

We studied K+p interactions at 100 GeV with the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. hydrogen bubble chamber and associated spark-chamber system. We find σtot(K+p)=18.7±1.8 mb and σel(K+p)=2.0±0.4 mb. We present the charged-multiplicity distribution and its moments, and the charge-transfer distribution. The average inelastic charged multiplicity is 〈nc〉=6.65±0.31 and the two-charged-particle correlation functions are f2cc=4.52±1.32 and f2−−=0.47±0.35.

The polarization parameter in pp elastic scattering was measured at 6 GeV/ c with fine t resolution for 0.02 < − t < 0.5 GeV 2 using a polarized proton beam with Effective Mass Spectrometer at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron. The polarization rises like √− t in the interval 0.02 < − t < 0.1 GeV 2 , No statistical significant structure was found in this region of momentum transfer.

The elastic differential cross section for pp scattering has been measured up to a momentum transfer of ‖ t ‖ = 3(GeV/ c ) 2 at 100 GeV/c and 200 GeV/c incident momenta. The 200 GeV/ c measurements shows a diffractive like dip at ‖ t ‖ = 1.5 GeV/ c while no such dip is seen in the 100 GeV/ c data.

New results are presented from the continuation of an experiment designed to study the polarization in elastic p−p scattering at large four-momentum transfers. A high-intensity unpolarized proton beam of momentum 12.3 GeV/c was incident on a propanediol polarized proton target and both final-state protons were detected and momentum-analyzed in multiwire proportional chamber spectrometers. The measurements spanned the t range 1.5<|t|<6.2 (GeV/c)2. The results are discussed in the framework of optical, exchange, and parton models.
