The focus of this experiment is on dimuons at low M T but the mass range up to the J ψ is also covered. Dimuons are measured over a wide rapidity interval, ranging from nearly central to very forward rapidities. We present the experimental results in different kinematic regions and as a function of charged multiplicity. The observed dimuon spectra are also compared to conventional sources of lepton pairs production.

We have measured the branching ratio for the hyperon radiative decay Ξ−→Σ−γ from a sample of 211±33 events obtained in the polarized 375 GeV/c charged hyperon beam at Fermilab. We find B(Ξ−→Σ−γ/Ξ−→Λ0π−)=(1.22±0.23±0.06)×10−4 where the quoted errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. We have also obtained an indication that the sign of the asymmetry parameter of this decay is positive.

We present our first results on φ and ϱ+ω production in pW and SW collisions at 200 GeV/nucleon, obtained using the HELIOS/3 muon spectrometer, which measures dimuons in a large acceptance in transverse momentum and rapidity. The data show a clear increase of the ratio φ/(ϱ+ω) going from pW to SW collisions and a slight increase from peripheral to central SW collisions. This the case for low (p t ≤ 0.6GeV/c) and high (p t > 0.6 GeV/c) transverse momentum. The rise is due to an increase in the number of produced φ mesons.

Light ion collisions with carbon target at 4.2 GeV/c/N are studied. Pion multiplicity distributions, momentum and angular spectra are analysed. These data are described in terms of models assuming independent interactions of nucleons from the projectile nucleus with the target.

Dimuon production is studied in 217-GeV/c π−-hydrogen and π−-beryllium collisions with a lead-glass array to detect photons associated with the ψ. The ψ−γ mass spectrum shows a 2.6-standard-deviation excess of events above background at ∼3.5 GeV. This excess, if attributed to the decay χ(∼3.5)→ψγ, implies that 0.70±0.28 of the ψ's are produced via radiative decay of one of the χ states.

Analyzing a sample of 220 000 events from an experiment still in progress at the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS), 60 pairs of electrons with an energy above 700 MeV have been observed. The electrons, produced by annihilation of antiprotons stopped in a liquid-hydrogen target, are detected with optical spark chambers and scintillation counters. Twenty-nine out of these 60 pairs have been found to be collinear; normalizing with respect to the hadronic two-body channels π + π − and K + K − , a braching ratio B ee =Γ( p ̄ p → e + e − )/Γ( p ̄ p → total ) = (3.2 ± 0.9) × 10 −7 has been obtained
