The scale cross section s d σ d x p for inclusive charged-particle production in e + e − annihilation has been studied for c.m. energies W between 12.0 and 36.7 GeV. Scale breaking is observed. For x p >0.2 the cross section decreases by ≈20% when W increases from 14 to 35 GeV. The production angular distribution was used to separate the longitudinal and transverse cross-section contributions and to determine the ratio of the structure functions m W 1 and v W 2 .

The photonic part of multihadronice+e− annihilation events has been analyzed at a c.m. energy of 34 GeV. The photonic energy fraction per event is determined to befγ=0.251±0.003 (stat.) ±0.04 (syste.). The neutral and charged components of the events are analyzed separately revealing close similarity in thrust axis directions and momentum distributions in agreement with the hypothesis that most photons result from π0 decay. π0's are reconstructed separately and used to determine the inclusive cross section. Comparing these cross sections with lower energy data from SPEAR we find some indication for scaling violation.

The reaction (e+e−→μ+μ−) has been measured between\(\sqrt S= 14.0\) and\(\sqrt S= 36.4\). The total cross section result is in good agreement with the QED prediction and the following Λ values have been obtained:Λ+=186 GeV,Λ−=101 GeV. R MEASURED IN SCANNING MODE.
We have measured the electron, muon, and charged-hadron pair production rates in two-phonon interactions for invariant masses above 2.0 GeV over a large of momentum transfer. The cross sections for electron and muon pairs show good agreement with the QED predictions at both small and large momentum transfer. The observed rate of hadron production is less than 6% of the rate that QED predicts for point-like hadrons, consistent with recent leading-order QCD calculations.

The inclusive production of π ± mesons in e + e − annihilation has been measured at c.m. energies of 14, 22 and 34 GeV for pion momenta between 0.3 ans 10 GeV/ c . The fraction of pions among the charged hadrons is above 90% at 0.4 GeV/ c and decreases to about 50% at high momenta. The scaled cross sections ( s β ) d σ d x at 14, 22 and 34 GeV as well as the 5.2 GeV data from DASP have a rather similar x dependence. After integration over the x range from 0.2 to 0.6 the cross sections indicate a monotonic decrease with increasing centre-of-mass energy.

We have studied the inclusive production of K*±(890) and Y*±(1385) in pp, π+p, and K+p interactions at 147 GeV/c. The experiment used the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber with the hybrid spectrometer system. Results are based on a sample of 1916 observed KS and 932 observed A. Inclusive cross sections are given for K*± and Y*± production from the three beams, and comparisons are made with experiments at other energies. Feynman-x and transverse-momentum-squared distributions are also calculated. The results suggest that the K*− is entirely produced in the central region, while the K*+ includes a component from beam fragmentation. Comparisons are made with the additive quark model.

We have measured, at an average centre-of-mass energy of 34.22 GeV a forward-backward charge asymmetry in the reaction e + e − → μ + μ − of value −0.161 ± 0.032. This demonstrates the existence of an axial vector neutral current with coupling strength of g e a g μ a =0.53 ± 0.10. We have also obtained a limit on the vector coupling strength of g e v g μ v <0.12. The Weinberg angle is found to be sin 2 θ W =0.29 +0.09 −0.11 . From the reaction e + e − → τ + τ − we have found g e a g τ a <0.34, g e v g τ v <0.55.

Large transverse energy cross sections of 300 GeV/ c pions and protons on hydrogen have been measured with a segmented calorimeter covering the central rapidity region −0.88 < y < 0.67 and 2 π in azimuth. The selected events show large multiplicities and no jet-like event structure. Processes more complicated than the scattering of two constituents appear to dominate these inelastic collisions.

We report on the interactions of an incident 200 GeV / c beam composed of 33% protons, 16% kaons, and 48% pions on targets of silver and gold mounted in the Fermilab 30″ bubble chamber. Within our limited statistics, we find the total cross sections and average multiplicities to agree with previously published data. We find the KNO scaling distribution curve to be broader for heavy nuclei than for hydrogen. We present the first data for V 0 production on gold and silver. We also present, for the first time, evidence for a positive charge excess among the sample of relativistic tracks from interactions on gold and silver. We observe a trend where the positive charge excess increases with target atomic number and with increasing charged particle multiplicity. We find the charge excess to exist among the sample of particles having greater than 2 GeV / c momentum and to persist in the sample with momentum greater than 4 GeV / c .

Data on inclusive kaon production in e+e− annihilations at energies in the vicinity of the ϒ(4S) resonance are presented. A clear excess of kaons is observed on the ϒ(4S) compared to the continuum. Under the assumption that the ϒ(4S) decays into BB¯, a total of 3.38±0.34±0.68 kaons per ϒ(4S) decay is found. In the context of the standard B-decay model this leads to a value for (b→c)(b→all) of 1.09±0.33±0.13.

CROSS SECTION FOR -T < 0.14 GEV**2.
The topology of hadronic e + e − annihilation events has been analysed using the sphericity tensor and a cluster method. Comparison with quark models including gluon bremsstrahlung yields good agreement with the data. The strong-coupling constant is determined in 1st order QCD to be α S =0.19±0.04 (stat) ± 0.04 (syst.) at 22 GeV and α S =0.16 ±0.02± 0.03 at 34 GeV. The differential cross section with respect to the energy fraction carried by the most energetic parton agrees with the prediction of QCD, but cannot be reproduced by a scalar gluon model. These results are stable against variations of the transverse momentum distribution of the fragmentation function within the quoted errors.

The process e + e − → π 0 + anything has been measured at c.m. energies of 14 and 34 GeV for π 0 energies between 0.5 and 4 GeV. The inclusive production ofK*±(890), ρρ(770), ω0(780) andf0(1,270) mesons is studied in\(\bar pp\) experiment at 32GeV/c in the MIRABELLE bubble chamber by the analysis of (K0π±) and (π+π−) invariant mass distributions. The inclusive cross sections are σ(K*±)=2.45±0.30 mb, σ(ρ0)=8.8 ±0.9 mb, σ(ω+)≃6.2 mb, and σ(f0)=2.2±0.7 mb. The C.M. longitudinal distribution of theK*±(890) is slightly shifted to the primary particles fragmentation regions; the ρ0 is produced more centrally. Results are presented on the inclusive photoproduction of λ and λ for incident photon energies between 25 and 70 GeV. The slope parameter of the p T 2 distribution is found to be 2.83±0.1 GeV −2 for λ and 3.28±0.25 GeV −2 for λ . The x F distributions, measured in the range −0.2 to 0.7, show that while λ are produced centrally, λ production extends to more negative values of x F ; the shapes show no energy dependence and are similar to those in pion-induced reactions. From the analysis of 5630 v υ and of 1372 v π charged current interactions, obtained in the BEBC bubble chamber filled with deuterium and exposed to the CERN wide band antineutrino beam, the ratios of cross section on neutron and photon targets have been measured and found to be R σ ν)/σ v p = 0.51 ± 0.01 (±0.03) , and R σ( ν n )/σ( v p ) = 22.2 ± 0.12 (±0.25) The dependence of these ratios on the x scaling variable shows, in a direct way, that the momentum distribution of the majority quark, u p ( x ) = d n ( x ), is broader than that of the minority quark, u n ( x ) = d p ( x ).

We have studied the properties of hadron production in photon-photon scattering with tagged photons at the e + e − storage ring PETRA. A tail in the p T distribution of particles consistent with p T −4 has been observed. We show that this tail cannot be due to the hadronic part of the photon. Selected events with high p T particles are found to be consistent with a two-jet structure as expected from a point-like coupling of the photons to quarks. The lowest-order cross section predicted for γγ → q q , σ = 3 Σ e q 4 · σ γγ → μμ , is approached from above by the data at large transverse momenta.

Results are presented on inclusive production of resonant and non-resonant particle systems produced inK+p interactions at 32 GeV/c. We compareK*+(892),\(\bar \Sigma ^{ *- } \)(1385), Σ*±(1385), and ϱ0 inclusivex-spectra with the ones of non-resonantKs0π±,\(\bar \Lambda \pi ^ -\), Λπ± and π+π− pairs at the same effective mass. Resonance-particle pairsK*+π±, Σ*+π−, and\(\bar \Sigma ^{ *- } \pi ^ -\) are also studied together with non-resonant tripletsKs0π±, Λπ+π−,\(\bar \Lambda \pi ^ -\pi ^ -\). Inclusive and semi-inclusive production of Λ and\(\bar \Lambda\) inK+p interactions is studied at an incident momentum of 70 GeV/c. Cross sections and single particle distributions are presented and compared with data at lower energies. Scaling is observed between 32 and 70 GeV/c in the Feynmanx variable in the target and the beam fragmentation regions for Λ and\(\bar \Lambda\) inclusive production respectively. An increase of Λ (\(\bar \Lambda\)) production is observed in the beam (target) fragmentation regions, whereas the data at 70 and 32 GeV/c are reasonably close in the central region. The dependence of the Λ(\(\bar \Lambda\)) polarization as a function ofx is measured and found to be in general agreement with the results at 32 GeV/c. The (Λ\(\bar \Lambda\)) pair production cross section increases significantly from 32 to 70 GeV/c. The Λ and\(\bar \Lambda\) production associated with an identified proton is also studied.

In an experiment with the 30-inch Hybrid Spectrometer at Fermilab we have obtained the inclusive and semi-inclusive production cross sections of the ϱ0 meson using a conventional background subtraction technique. Production cross sections for the ϱ0 are derived as a function of the Feynman scaling variablex, and the transverse variablespt2 andEt=(pt2+M2)1/2. The longitudinal distributions are compared with the (1−x) dependence of the proton and meson valence quark structure functions, using various forms of recombination and fragmentation models. The transverse distributions are compared with thermodynamic models. We give density matrix elements for the ϱ0 production from pions in the extreme forward region.

Two-photon interactions have been studied with the SLAC-LBL Mark II magnetic detector at SPEAR. The cross section for η′ production by the reaction e+e−→e+e−η′ has been measured at beam energies from 2.0 to 3.7 GeV. The radiative width Γγγ(η′) has been determined to be 5.8±1.1 keV (±20% systematic uncertainty). Upper limits on the radiative widths of the f(1270), A2(1310), and f′(1515) tensor mesons have been determined. A search has been made for production of the E(1420) by γγ collisions, but no signal is observed.

Total neutrino and antineutrino cross sections in the energy range 15 to 150 GeV, and the nucleon structure functions, F 2 ( x , Q 2 ) and xF 3 ( x , Q 2 ) in the Q 2 range 0.5 to 50 (GeV/ c ) 2 have been measured using a data sample of 3000 neutrino and 3800 antineutrino events. Differential cross sections of proton Compton scattering have been measured at the Bonn 2.5 GeV synchrotron. 78 data points are presented as angular distributions at photon lab energies of 700, 750, 800, 850, 900, and 950MeV. The c.m. scattering angle ranges from 40°–130°, corresponding to a variation of the four momentum transfer squared betweent=−0.10 tot=−0.96 GeV2 at 700 and 950 MeV, respectively. Two additional differential cross sections have been measured at 1000MeV, 35.6° and 47.4°. The angular distributions show forward peaks whose extrapolations to 0° are consistent with calculated forward cross sections taken from literature. The small angle data (|t| ≲0.2 GeV2) together with the calculated cross sections at 0° are also consistent with the assumption of a slope parameterB of 5 GeV−2. For the first time a rerise of the angular distributions towards backward angles has been observed. It becomes less steep with increasing energy. The most interesting feature of the angular distributions is a sharp structure which appears betweent=−0.55 GeV2 at 700MeV andt=−0.72 GeV2 at 950 MeV. Such a rapid varation of the differential cross section witht has never been ovserved in elastic hadron-hadron scattering or photoproduction processes. It indicates the existence of a dynamical mechanism which could be a peculiarity of Compton scattering.

New experimental results are presented on inclusive production properties of\(\bar \Sigma ^{ *+ } \)(1385) and\(\bar \Sigma ^{ *+ } \)(1385) inK+p interactions at 32 GeV/c. The analysis is based on significantly larger statistics than previously available. A comparison is also made of invariantx-distributions ofK0/\(\bar K^0 \),\(\bar \Lambda \) and\(\bar \Xi ^ +\) and of\(\bar \Sigma ^{ *\pm } \)(1385) andK*+(892). These spectra exhibit regularities expected from the quark-recombination picture when it is assumed that the strange mesons and antibaryons are produced off the strange\(\bar s\)-valence-quark in the incidentK+ meson. Transverse momentum distributions are also presented forK*+(892) and\(\bar \Sigma ^{ *\pm } \)(1385) and found to be very similar. The results on strange antibaryon average multiplicities disagree strongly with a recent version of the additive quark model.

We present a measurement of the cross section for the reaction e + e − → e + e − π + π − π + π − at SPEAR. This channel is found to be large and dominated by the process γγ → ϱ 0 ϱ 0 → π + π − π + π − . The cross section, which is small just above the four-pion threshold, exhibits a large enhancement near the ϱ 0 ϱ 0 threshold.
Axis error includes +- 0.0/0.0 contribution (THE QUOTED ERRORS INCLUDE VARIOUS SYSTEMATIC ERRORS ADDED QUADRATICALLY).
The final states of charged hadrons produced in 280 GeV μp scattering are analysed with respect to their planarity and jet structure. Distributions of p ⊥ 2 in and p ⊥ out 2 are presented. A two jet structure in the forward hemisphere is observed for events with high p ⊥ tracks are predicted by QCD models.
PTIN**2 is the sum of the PTIN components squared.
PTOUT**2 is the sum of the PTOUT components squared.
Measurements of the reaction γ p → p π + π − π + π − are presented, in which π + π − π + π − systems with masses up to 3 GeV are produced from fragmentation of the incident photon. The reaction is dominated by production of the large peak of the ϱ′(1600) meson and, at higher masses ≳2 GeV, y production of jet-like 4 π systems. The ϱ′(1600) meson is produced by a predominantly s -channel helicity conserving mechanism. At higher masses there are also indications of ϱπ peaks, of masses 1.3 GeV (the A 2 meson) and 1.75 GeV, produced with a recoiling π meson by a mechanism consistent with the Deck effect.
CORRECTED FOR TAILS OF BREIT-WIGNER RESONANCE USED IN FIT AND ALLOWING FOR 10 PCT BACKGROUND.
The energy dependence of the average of the charged multiplicity and its dispersion in π + /K + /p interaction on protons at 147 GeV/ c is found to be the same as in e + e − annihilations if an “effective energy” variable is used instead of the total energy. The effective energy S eff is defined as the invariant mass of all secondaries left after the two leading particles have been removed. Fitting the expression aS eff b to the average charge multiplicity 〈 n ch 〉, we find the power b to be in good agreement with the value of 0.25 predicted by Fermi's statistical model and by Landau's hydrodynamical model.

The inclusive production of neutral kaons in 70 GeV/ c K + p interactions is studied with the CERN BEBC bubble chamber. The (semi-)inclusive cross sections are interpreted in terms of the various strangeness channels leading to neutral kaon production. The invariant inclusive cross section for kaon production is studied as a function of p t 2 and the Feynman variable x . The latter distributions are considered both “raw” and corrected for the presence of K 0 's resulting from K ∗ decay. They are compared with the predictions expected from the Regge-Mueller formalism, the recombination model and fragmentation models.
