Hydrogen and deuterium gases have been bombarded in a gas target at a temperature of 77°K and at a pressure of about 140 atmospheres by the 318±10 Mev "spread-out" bremsstrahlung photon beam of the Berkeley electron synchrotron. The charged π-mesons which were produced were collimated at angles of 45°, 90°, and 135° to the beam direction. The π+ mesons were detected with trans-stilbene scintillation crystals using πμ, πβ, and πμβ delayed coincidences and π+ and π− mesons were detected with Ilford C-2 200-micron nuclear emulsions. The ratios of the numbers of π− to π+ mesons produced in deuterium were 0.96±0.10, 1.09±0.12, and 1.21±0.17 for the angles of 45°, 90°, and 135°, respectively. No variation of the ratio with meson energy, outside statistics, was observed. Absolute values for the π+ meson energy distribution functions from hydrogen and deuterium per "equivalent quantum" have been measured at each of the above production angles. The differential and total cross sections have been obtained by integrating over energy and angle, respectively. The experimental ratios of the deuterium to hydrogen cross sections are in good agreement with the phenomenological theory of Chew and Lewis when the Hulthén deuteron function with β=6α is used in the initial state, plane waves are used for the nucleons in the final state, and the bremsstrahlung cutoff is taken into account. The statistics of the data are, however, not sufficient to determine the amount of spin interaction. The excitation functions for hydrogen and deuterium and points on the angular distribution curves in the center-of-mass system have been obtained. An upper limit of 0.08 of the charged π-meson cross section was obtained for μ-meson production from deuterium.

The results of the experiment searching for quarks with charge − 1 3 and 2 3 produced by 70 GeV protons on an aluminium target at zero angle are reported. For the selection of quarks the system of spectrometric scintillation counters, time-of-flight spectrometer, gas Cerenkov threshold counter and magnetic spectrometer with spark chambers were used. In the range of masses available at the IHEP accelerator, quarks were not found. The upper limit estimation of the differential cross-section for quark production with mass ⩽ 5 GeV /c 2− and charge −1 3 is 7×10 −38 cm 2 / ster GeV /c (with 90% confidence level). The total cross-section for quark production with charge −1 3 and mass 4.5–5 GeV /c 2 does not exceed 3×10 −39 cm 2 .

d ̄ p and p ̄ d total cross-sections have been measured at 13.3 and 6.65 GeV/ c respectively to check CPT-invariance. The standard transmission technique was used. The difference of d ̄ p and p ̄ d total cross-sections appeared to be equal 0.2 ± 2.6 mb. In addition d ̄ d and p ̄ p total cross-sections have been obtained. The experimental data allowed us to derive the total cross-section of antineutrons on protons, neutrons and deutrons.

3 H̃e nuclei were observed in the negative beam, produced by 70 GeV protons on an Al target. Five 3 H̃e have been identified among 2.4 · 10 11 particles that passed through the apparatus. Scintillation and Čerenkov counters were used to measure the electrical charge and velocity of particles. Results are presented on effective-mass distributions, differentisl cross sections and longitudinal c.m. momentum distributions for the channels K − p → K − p π o , K o p π − and K − π + n , obtained from a sample of approximately 28 000 inelastic two-pronged interactions at 4.2 GeV/ c incident momentum. The results are in satisfactory agreement with the prediction of a generalized Veneziano-model corrected for (non-dual) π -and pomeron exchange. For the channel K − pπ o pomeron exchange contributes about 20% of the cross section. In the channel K − π + n the dual, pion and pomeron contributions are responsible for resp. 15%, 65% and 20% of the total cross section.

The p p and p n elastic differential cross sections have been extracted from the reaction p d→ p pn in which the deuteron breaks up. The incident antiproton momenta were 0.480, 0.735 and 0.940 GeV/ c , and the range of the momentum transfers was 0.04 < ∣ t ∣ < 0.7 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Both p p and p n differential cross sections are diffraction-like, with structure similar to the higher-momentum data.

The p d elastic differential cross section is expressed in terms of a deutron form factor and the I =0 t -channel exchange N N amplitudes, enabling us to isolate the corresponding I =0 t -channel exchange cross sections.

A bubble-chamber study is presented of a 10 events/μb experiment using K − mesons of 4.25 GeV/ c incident momentum. Differential and total cross sections are determined for 7 different reactions: K − p → K 0 n ( la ), → π 0 Λ ( lb ), → ηΛ ( lc ), → η′Λ ( ld ), → π − Σ ( le ), → π + Σ − ( lf ), K + Ξ − ( lg ) . The experimental characteristics in d σ /d t of each reaction are described: (la) shows a levelling off at t = 0 (GeV/ c ) 2 , a break at t = −0.6 (GeV/ c ) 2 and no backward events, (lb) d σ /d t has a smooth behaviour and a measurable backward component with an indication of a dip at u = −0.2 (GeV/ c ) 2 , (1c) d σ /d t shows a dip in the region between t ≈ −0.2 and −0.4 (GeV/ c ) 2 , (ld) d σ /d t has a smooth behaviour; neither this reaction nor the preceding one shows a clear evidence for backward events, (le) d σ /d t has a break at t = −0.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 ; there is a significant cross section in the backward region; (lf) and (lg) show mainly backward production. The polarization of the hyperon is measured in the reactions (lb), (lc), (ld) and (le) in the forward production peak. The statistics do not allow the detection of a definite structure in the polarization but the sign and magnitude are determined. An interpretation of the results is given in terms of a dual Regge model, including the effects of absorption as elaborated recently by several authors.

Results on the elastic K − π − scattering have been obtained from a study of the K − π − system in 15 000 events of the type K − p→K − π − p π + at a K − beam momentum of 4.25 GeV/ c . The on-mass-shell values of the spherical harmonic moments of the K − π − scattering angular distribution and the K − π − elastic cross section have been obtained by extrapolation to the pion pole. From these values we determined the s- and p-wave phase shifts δ 0 3 and δ 1 3 as a function of the effective mass of the K − π − system between threshold and 1.25 GeV/ c 2 . The value of | δ 0 3 | is smaller than 17° for all mass values and the existence of a p-wave cannot be neglected. At m K − π − = 1.18 GeV/ c 2 there are two solutions for the phase shifts. On the average, the cross section of the K − π − elastic scattering over the region of the effective mass considered amounts to approximately 2.5 mb.
The errors combine statistical and systematical effects.
The errors are statistical.

The asymmetry of π o and π + photoproduction from hydrogen has been measured. The π o -mesons were detected at 130° cms with E γ ranged from 0.9 to 1.65 GeV, and the π + -mesons at 40° cms with E γ ranged from 0.9 to 1.2 GeV. The results agree with model predictions of single pion photoproduction in the resonance region using fixed- t dispersion relations.

The inclusive reaction pp → Λ + X ++ at 19 GeV/ c beam momentum has been analyzed in terms of the triple-Regge formalism. A good description of the structure function is achieved for events with | t | < 4 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The effective trajectory obtained from fits to the M 2 / s distribution in different t bins is α R ( t ) = −(0.38 ± 0.11) + (1.15 ± 0.07) t , which holds up to a | t | value of 4 (GeV/ c ) 2 . This is consistent with the K trajectory rather than the K ∗ trajectory which has been reported from other experiments.

The inclusive spectra for p p collisions at 22.4 GeV/ c are investigated. We show that the transverse momentum distributions resemble those in high-energy pp interactions and discuss the influence of annihilation processes on the p T 2 distributions. The invariant inclusive cross section for pions in the central region is found to be 28 ± 1 mb. A charge asymmetry is indicated by the y ∗ spectrum in the central region, the asymmetry parameter having the value 0.15 ± 0.01. Finally, we estimate the upper limit of the diffraction dissociation of the beam particle to be 3.68 −0.15 +0.45 mb.

We present differential cross sections and the Σ + polarization for the reactions K − p → π ∓ Σ ± using data from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment at 4.2 GeV/ c incident momentum. The statistical level allows a detailed analysis of these reactions over the whole t range. Several significant structures are observed. Comparisons are made with SU(3)-related reactions; for backward production of π − Σ + such a comparison shows good evidence for Δ exchange. The exotic forward peak in K − p → π + Σ − is definitely confirmed.

For Λω and Λ⊘, an almost complete amplitude analysis is performed in several regions of momentum transfer. The data are examined from the point of view of various exchange models.
