We present results from the NA32 experiment at CERN on the production characteristics of the charmed baryon Λ + c in 230 GeV π − Cu and K − Cu interactions. A high resolution vertex detector consisting of change-coupled devices and silicon microstrip detectors allowed the selection of a very clean sample of 154 Λ + c → pK − π + (and charge conjugate) decays. Results on differential and integrated cross sections are given.

The production of Λ,\(\bar \Lambda\) andKs0 has been studied in 200 GeV/nucleonp+S and S+S collisions in the streamer chamber of the NA35 experiment at the CERN SPS. Significant enhancement of the multiplicities of all observed strange particles relative to negative hadrons was observed in central S+S collisions, as compared top+p andp+S collisions. The latter collisions show no overall (relative) strangeness enhancement overp+p, but the rapidity distributions and hadron multiplicities indicate some secondary cascading production of Λ particles in thep+S andp+Au collisions. The Λ polarization in central S+S collisions was found to be compatible with zero up topT=2 GeV/c.

We report results on inclusive production of the charmed baryon Λc+ from e+e− annihilations at s=10.5 GeV. Measurements are presented of the inclusive cross section times branching fraction for the continuum production of Λc+ as observed in six different decay modes, and of a new, improved value of the Λc+ mass. The inclusive cross section times the branching fraction into pK−π+ is measured to be 10.0±1.5±1.5 pb summed over all xp. The branching fractions of Λc+ into pK¯0, pK¯0π+π−, Λπ+, Λπ+π−π+, and Ξ−K+π+ relative to that into pK−π+ are measured to be 0.44±0.07±0.05, 0.43±0.12±0.04, 0.18±0.03±0.03, 0.65±0.11±0.12, and 0.15±0.04±0.03, respectively. The Λc+ mass is measured to be 2284.7±0.6±0.7 MeV/c2. The measured momentum distributions for continuum production of Λc+ are compared to analytical fragmentation functions and to other measurements.

Double differential cross sections for the photon induced emission of π − , π + and protons from Be, C, O, Ti, and Pb have been measured in the photon energy range k = 220–450 MeV using the tagged photon beam of the Bonn 500 MeV synchrotron. The hadron detector consists of a magnetic spectrometer and a large acceptance scintillation counter array. For Be, the single-arm energy distributions show clear structures from quasi-free pion production and quasi-deuteron photodisintegration. These structures disappear with increasing target size. The dependence of the differential cross section on the nuclear size S at Θ lab = 52° can be described by the power law d σ/ d Ω ∞ S α , where S is the number of protons or neutrons, respectively. The exponent is α π ≈ 0.6 for π − and π + and α p ≈ 1.15 for protons. Data for pn, pp, and pπ coincidences are presented. The results are compared to intranuclear cascade codes (PICA and PIKI) and to microscopic calculations.

We study the inclusive momentum distribution of charged particles in multihadronic events produced in e + e − annihilations at E CM ∼ M (Z 0 ). We find agreement with the analytical formulae for gluon production that include the phenomena of soft gluon interference. Using data from CM energies between 14 and 91 GeV, we study the dependence of the inclusive momentum distribution on the centre of momentum energy. We find that the analytical formulae describe the data over the entire energy range. Both the momentum distribution at a fixed energy and the change with energy are described by QCD shower Monte Carlo's which include either coherent gluon branchings or string fragmentation. Simple incoherent models with independent fragmentation fail to reproduce the energy dependence and momentum spectra.

In a photoproduction experiment using a mean photon energy of 100 GeV we have observed 29±8 Λ c ( Λ c ) charmed-baryon and antibaryon decays in the pK − π + ( p K + π − ) final state. Quasi two-body final states do not contribite significantly to this channel. The mass of the Λ c was measured to be 2281.7±2.7±2.6 MeV/ c 2 and its lifetime 0.18±0.03±0.03 ps. The ratio of Λ c D production, measured in this experiment, is significantly greater than that predicted by photon-gluon fusion and using a Lund model to describe the hadronization. This excess cannot be completely accounted for in this model, even using a Λ c branching fraction in pK π as high as 5%.
Result extrapolated to all lambda/c energies has large model dependent uncertainties.
We have measured the rate of D ∗± meson production inside the jets produced in p p collisions at √ s = 630 GeV. For jets in the transverse energy range 15< E T <60 GeV we find a production rate of 0.10±0.04±0.03 D ∗± per jet, which is in good agreement with perturbative QCD calculations. In addition, we find that the D ∗± fragmentation distribution is strongly peaked towards low z consistent with gluon splitting as the dominant production mechanism.

We have studied the properties of pion production in the reaction γ →3 π + 3 π − in the energy range 1.6⩽ W γγ ⩽7.5 GeV with the CELLO detector at PETRA. We present the topological cross section both for Q 2 ≈0 (anti-tag) and Q 2 ≈0 (single-tag). The Q 2 dependence of the cross section is flatter than the GVDM prediction. The distribution of the production angle of the pions in the CMS peaks at small angles, indicating a peripheral process. In accordance with the VDM picture the p T distribution of the pions manifests an exponential fall-off. Like sign pion pairs were found to be Bose-Einstein correlated. We use this correlation to estimate the spatial dimensions of the interaction region.

The charged-particle fractional momentum distribution within jets, D(z), has been measured in dijet events from 1.8-TeV p¯p collisions in the Collider Detector at Fermilab. As expected from scale breaking in quantum chromodynamics, the fragmentation function D(z) falls more steeply as dijet invariant mass increases from 60 to 200 GeV/c2. The average fraction of the jet momentum carried by charged particles is 0.65±0.02(stat)±0.08(syst).
