The structure of hadronic events fromZ0 decay is studied by measuring event shape variables, factorial moments, and the energy flow distribution. The distributions, after correction for detector effects and initial and final state radiation, are compared with the predictions of different QCD Monte Carlo programs with optimized parameter values. These Monte Carlo programs use either the second order matrix element or the parton shower evolution for the perturbative QCD calculations and use the string, the cluster, or the independent fragmentation model for hadronization. Both parton shower andO(α2s matrix element based models with string fragmentation describe the data well. The predictions of the model based on parton shower and cluster fragmentation are also in good agreement with the data. The model with independent fragmentation gives a poor description of the energy flow distribution. The predicted energy evolutions for the mean values of thrust, sphericity, aplanarity, and charge multiplicity are compared with the data measured at different center-of-mass energies. The parton shower based models with string or cluster fragmentation are found to describe the energy dependences well while the model based on theO(α2s calculation fails to reproduce the energy dependences of these mean values.

Using the detector ARGUS at the storage ring DORIS II of DESY, we have found evidence for the production of the charmed and doubly strange baryon Ω c through its decay channel Ξ − K − π + π + . Its mass has been determined to be ((2719.0±7.0±2.5)MeV/ c 2 , and the product of production cross section and branching ratio the above channel to be (2.41±0.90±0.30) pb.

Experimental study of b quark jets in e+ e- annihilation at TRISTAN

The TOPAZ collaboration Nagai, K. ; Enomoto, R. ; Abe, T. ; et al.
Phys.Lett.B 278 (1992) 506-510, 1992.
Inspire Record 333342 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.29230

An experimental study of b-quark jets using high- p T electrons was carried out at √ s =58 GeV with the TOPAZ detector at the e + e − collider TRISTAN at KEK. The forward-backward charge asymmetry of the b-quark was obtained to be A b b ̄ =−0.55±0.27( stat. )±0.07( syst. ) , consistent with the standard model prediction. Also, such jet properties of the b-quark as the average charged multiplicity and the rapidity of charged particles were analyzed. In order to purify the b-quark event samples in this analysis, only events with backward-going electrons or forward-going positrons were used. The energy dependence of these jet properties was studied by making comparisons with the results of the DELCO experiment at the PEP collider (√ s =29 GeV) at SLAC.

Evidence for b flavored baryon production in Z0 decays at LEP

We observe evidence for the production of b-flavoured baryons in decays of the Z 0 boson with the OPAL detector at LEP. We find 68 Λl − , Λ l + candidates in 458 583 hadronic Z 0 decays. We interpret this as a signal of 55 ± 9 +0.3 −3.1 events from the semi-leptonic decays of b baryons. Assuming weakly decaying b baryons produced in Z 0 decays are mostly Λ b particles, we measure the product branching ratio (Γ b b /Γ had ) f ( b →Λ b ) B (Λ b →Λl − v X ) , averaged over the electron and muon channels, to be (6.2±1.0±1.5)×10 −4 .

Cross sections are presented for the inclusive production of Λ hyperons in electron-positron annihilations at s=29 GeV based on the full 291-pb−1 sample of data taken in the High Resolution Spectrometer experiment at the SLAC e+e− storage ring PEP. These results, and the associated correlation analyses, are consistent with the Lund model predictions with the strange diquark suppression ratio δ fixed at 0.59±0.10±0.18, as compared to the standard Lund value of 0.32. The Λ multiplicity has been found to be 0.182±0.020 per event. The opposite-strangeness multiplicity 〈nΛΛ¯〉 has been measured to be 0.046±0.020, whereas the like-strangeness multiplicity 〈nΛΛ+Λ¯Λ¯〉 is 0.009±0.028. A strong correlation is found between Λ's and Λ¯'s; when one is found in an event, the other is found in the same event with a probability that exceeds 50%.

Determination of $alpha_{s}$ in second order {QCD} from hadronic $Z$ decays

The DELPHI collaboration Abreu, P. ; Adam, W. ; Adami, F. ; et al.
Z.Phys.C 54 (1992) 55-74, 1992.
Inspire Record 333272 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.14603

Distributions of event shape variables obtained from 120600 hadronicZ decays measured with the DELPHI detector are compared to the predictions of QCD based event generators. Values of the strong coupling constant αs are derived as a function of the renormalization scale from a quantitative analysis of eight hadronic distributions. The final result, αs(MZ), is based on second order perturbation theory and uses two hadronization corrections, one computed with a parton shower model and the other with a QCD matrix element model.

Studies of e+ e- ---> gamma gamma and gamma-gamma-gamma reactions

Phys.Lett.B 284 (1992) 144-150, 1992.

We have measured the cross section for γγ production with the TOPAZ detector in the energy region √ s =50.0–61.4 GeV. The observed cross section for γγ production integrated over |cos θ | ⩽ 0.77 is 50.2±0.8±2.2 pb at 〈√ s 〉=57.6 GeV and the ratio of this value to the QED prediction is 1.01±0.02±0.04. The angular distribution is in good agreement with the QED predictions, thereby setting limits on the compositeness scales, Λ L+R + =168 GeV, Λ L+R − =97 GeV, Λ L,R =141 GeV, Λ L,R − =81 GeV, and Λ L−R ± =68 GeV, at the 95% confidence level. The reaction e + e − → γγγ was also studied and was found consistent with the QED prediction.
