Inelastic Muon-Proton Scattering: Multiplicity Distributions, and Prong Cross-Sections

In a streamer-chamber experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, we observed hadron production in inelastic collisions of 14-GeV positive muons in a liquid hydrogen target. We report on the experiment, the analysis, and the resulting cross sections for hadronic prongs as well as the charged-hadron multiplicity distributions.

Measurements of the Spin Rotation Parameter R in p p and pi+ p Elastic Scattering at 45-GeV/c

The spin rotation sf R in pp and π + p elastic scattering at 45 GeV/c has been measured at the Seppukhov accelarator, for z . sfnc ; t |; ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 (GeV/) 2 . The results are presented, together with previous R measurements at lower energies. The equality of the values for R in proton-proton and pion-proton scattering, within the experimental errors, is a test of factorization of the residues in the pomeron exchange.

Polarization Measurements in pi+ p, K+ p and p p Elastic Scattering at 45-GeV/c and Comparison with Regge Phenomenology

The polarization parameter P has been measured for elastic π + p, K + p and pp scattering at 45 GeV/c. Four-momentum transfer ranges from −0.08 to −1.1 (GeV/) 2 for pp, and from −0.08 to −0.9 (GeV/) 2 for π + p and K + p. The energy dependence of the polarization P ( t ) in π + p and in K + p above 6 GeV/c incident momentum is compatible with interference between pomeron and Regge poles. On the other hand, the polarization in p p elastic scattering decreases faster than ordinary Regge model predictions. This result can be explained by interference between non flip and flip amplitudes of the pomeron, leading to negative values for the polarization.

Measurement of the Ratio Between the Real and the Imaginary Part of the K- p Forward Scattering Amplitude at 14.3-GeV/c

Elastic scattering of 14.3 GeV/ c K − with protons has been analyzed in the | t | region between 0.005 and 0.550 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The ratio α between the real and the imaginary part of the elastic forward scattering amplitude is found to be α =+0.056 ± 0.052. The slope parameters A and B in the expression d σ /d| t | ∞ exp( At + Bt 2 ) are A = 8.47 ± 0.20 (GeV/ c ) −2 and B = 1.82 ± 0.52 (GeV/ c ) −4 .

Measurements of Polarization and Spin Rotation in Proton Proton Elastic Scattering at 3.83-GeV/c

The polarization P in proton-proton elastic scattering has been measured at 3.83 GeV/ c for 0.35 ⩽ | t | ⩽ 3.0 (GeV/ c ) 2 , i.e. 29° ⩽ θ c.m. ⩽ 93°. The polarization shows a minimum at − ⋍ 1.0 ( GeV /c) 2 followed by a maximum at −⋍1.5 ( GeV /c) 2 . At the same energy the spin rotation parameter R has been measured in the interval 0.18 ⩽ | t | ⩽ 0.57 (GeV/ c ) 2 . Comparison with the results at 6.0 and 15.75 GeV/ c shows a similar t -dependence and the same average value at all three energies.

Measurement of Medium-Energy alpha-Proton Elastic Scattering Beyond the First Minimum Region

The α-proton elastic scattering has been measured with α particles at equivalent incident proton energies of 438, 648, and 1036 MeV. A structure is observed at the position where a second minimum is expected in the differential cross section. Comparison with improved versions of the Glauber model are presented.

Inclusive pi- and gamma Production in 24-GeV/c p p Collisions

We report the 24-GeV/c inclusive π− yield near θc.m.=90° for 0.5<~PT≲2.2 GeV/c. No high-PT excess is seen at this energy. In addition we have obtained the inclusive γ-ray yield from a measurement of low-mass e+e− pairs. This yield is compared with that expected from π0-, η-, and ω-meson decay, to provide limits on possible direct photon production.

Alpha-Proton Elastic Scattering in the Backward Hemisphere

Incident alphas on protons were used to measure the elastic cross section in the backward hemisphere at 3.20, 4.00, 5.08 and 6.00 GeV/ c . The level and shape of the angular distributions are strongly dependent on energy. A backward peak shows up at 4.00 GeV/ c and become much steeper when the energy increases.

Inclusive Cross-Sections for 180-Degree Production of High-Energy Protons, Deuterons, and Tritons in p-Nucleus Collisions at 600-MeV and 800-MeV

The inclusive cross sections, measured up to large values of effective mass (≡q22ν), are well fitted by dσd3p=Bxexp(−αxp22mx). Values of Bx and αx are given for Be, C, Cu, and Ta at the incident proton energy of 600 MeV and for Ag, Ta, and Pt at 800 MeV. Extremely large dp and tp ratios and large A and q2 dependences of the relative cross sections are observed.

Data are presented from a high statistics bubble chamber experiment to study K − p interactions in the c.m. energy range 1775 to 1957 MeV. For the reactions K − p → K − p, K − p → K 0 n , K − p → Λπ 0 and K − p → Σ ± π ∓ channel cross sections, differential cross sections and, where appropriate, polarisation distributions have been obtained. The channel cross sections for K − p → Σ 0 π 0 are presented. In general the results are in agreement with those previously published although a significant discrepancy has been found in the Σ ± π ∓ cross sections at the lower energies. New measurements of the Σ ± lifetimes have also been obtained ( τ Σ − = 1.49 ± 0.03 × 10 −10 sec, τ Σ + = 0.807 ± 0.013 × 10 −10 sec).
