The reaction π − + p → π − + π − + π + + p at 25 GeV/ c was studied in the mass region M 3 π ⩾ 1.8 GeV with leading π + . The mass spectrum of the π + π − system shows peaks corresponding to the ϱ 0 , f and g 0 resonances and an enhancement around 1.9 GeV. Evidence is presented for a J P = 3 + s-wave g 0 π − state (A 4 ) similar to the ϱ 0 π − (A 1 ) and fπ − (A 3 ) threshold enhancements.

We have measured the polarization parameter for proton-proton elastic scattering at p0 = 6 GeV/c for |t|<0.5 (GeV/c)2 using the polarized proton beam at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. These data, together with all previous measurements in this t region, are well fitted by the empirical relation P = (0.481±0.010)(−t)12exp(2.291±0.085)t.

Angular distributions for the reactions Zr98(p, π+)Zr91(g.s.) and Pb208(p, π+)Pb209(0.0, 0.78, and 1.41 MeV) at 160 MeV have been measured from 25 to 155 deg using a quadrupole-dipole-dipole-multipole magnetic spectrograph. The Zr90 angular distribution has a shallow minimum at about 80 deg; the Pb208 angular distributions have minima at more forward angles and rise markedly in the backward hemisphere. The (p, π+) cross sections observed in this mass region depend weakly on target mass and angular momentum transfer.
