A peak in the pK−π+ and p¯K+π− invariant-mass spectra at 2.285±0.006 GeV/c2 is observed, which is associated with the lowest-lying charmed baryon (Λc). A cross section times branching ratio of 0.037±0.012 nb at Ec.m.=5.2 GeV is measured with a substantial fraction of the events produced with an equal recoiling mass. New measurements of inclusive p and Λ cross sections are also presented, allowing an estimate of the branching ratio B(Λc→pK−π+)=0.022±0.010.

The reactions Λ p → Λ p, → Σ ± p π ∓ , → Λ p π + π − and → Σ 0 p have been studied in the SLAC 82 inch bubble chamber for incident Λ particles in the momentum range 1–10 GeV/ c . The incident Λ flux was produced by the exposure of a platinum target mounted inside the chamber to a 12 GeV K − beam. A total of 992 events have been analyzed. The reactions are found to be qualitatively similar to corresponding nucleon-nucleon reactions. In particular, the slope parameter B in the elastic cross section d σ /d t = A e Bt has been determined as a function of incident momentum and found to be consistent with that for proton-proton elastic scattering. Angular distributions for the inelastic channels are compared with those of similar nucleon-nucleon reactions, and predictions of relevant exchange models.

$\pi^- p$ at 205 GeV/c: Multiplicities of Charged and Neutral Particles Production of Neutral Particles

Phys.Rev.D 15 (1977) 3163, 1977.
Inspire Record 111665 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.24616

A study of 205-GeV/c π−p interactions has been made with a 48 800-picture exposure in the bare Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber. The average number of charged particles produced per inelastic interaction is 7.99±0.06. The elastic cross section is 3.18±0.13 mb and the total cross section is 24.19±0.44 mb. The inclusive cross sections for neutral-particle production are: σ(γ)=171.3±15.3 mb, σ(KS0)=3.64±0.61 mb (x<0.3), σ(Λ)=1.71±0.34 mb (x<0.3), and σ(Λ¯)=0.59±0.23 mb (x<0.1). The average number of π0's produced per inelastic collision is consistent with a linear rise with the number of charged particles, and about equal to the number of produced π− or π+. The average number of K0's, Λ's, and Λ¯'s is consistent with very little dependence on the number of charged particles. General characteristics of neutral-particle production are presented and compared with other experiments. For each topology the produced neutral energy is ∼13 of the incident energy.

Measurements of K + p elastic scattering have been carried out at 13 momenta between 432 MeV/ c and 939 MeV/ c using spark chambers. The data establish unambiguously the constructive interference of the Coulomb and nuclear amplitudes at 432 MeV/ c . The elastic cross section is found to be independent of momentum through the range covered. The phase shifts for S, P, D and F waves are obtained in an energy dependent analysis in which higher waves are held at theoretical values. The initial behaviour ofthe P, D and F amplitudes is quite close to that predicted by the calculation of the peripheral partial waves. Only the P3 and D5 amplitudes become strikingly different with increasing momentum.

K+ p elastic scattering between 432 and 939 mev/c

We present data from a spark-chamber study of K+p elastic scattering between 432 and 939 MeV/c, over the range −0.6<cosθc.m.<+0.7. With measurements at 13 momenta, and between 2000 events at the lowest momentum and 5000 events at the highest momentum, there is a major improvement over previous data. The elastic cross sections deduced from the differential cross sections are almost independent of momentum through the range covered. The data are inconsistent with counter measurements of the total cross section which suggest a sharp shoulder in the cross section at about 700 MeV/c.

A study of k+ d interactions from 865 to 1585 mev/c

We present experimental results on K + d interactions from 865 to 1585 MeV/ c incident beam momentum. We report measurements of several K + d partial cross sections and calculate most of the others using relations derived from isospin conservation and data from other experiments. The most striking feature of the cross section data is the abrupt rise of the total single-pion-production cross section near 1000 MeV/ c . We extract isospin-0 KN partial cross sections and find a rapid quasi-two-body reaction KN → K ∗ N . As in the case of the isospin-1 K + N system, it appears that the structure around 1200 MeV/ c in the total cross section for the isospin-0 K ∗ N system is well reconstructed by the sum of three smoothly varying channel cross sections σ 0 (KN), σ 0 (KN π ) and σ 0 (KN ππ ). We study thereaction KN → K ∗ N near threshold and find that the production and decay angular distributions can be interpreted in terms of t -channel phenomena, specifically a superposition of ω, ϱ, and π exchange. As is true of the isospin-1 KΔ and K ∗ N final states, the isospin-0 K ∗ N state has a behavior near threshold which is not very different from its behavior at much higher energy.

Single-pion production in k+ p interactions at 4.6 gev/c

A study of K + p interactions at 4.6 GeV/ c leading to single-pion production is presented. Cross sections for the final states KΔ, K ∗ (891)p, K ∗ (1420)p are given. Comparison of the results of this study with published K − p and K − n data at the same momentum indicates that corresponding K − cross sections are significantly smaller, but other features such as momentum transfer distributions and density matrix elements are very similar.

Lambda p interactions in momentum range 300 to 1500 mev/c

A sample of approximately 250 Λp interactions has been obtained in the Λ-hyperon momentum range of about 300 to 500 MeV/ c . An enhanced Λ-hyperon production rate was obtained by exposing an internally-mounted platinum target to the incident 1.5 GeV/ c meson beam. Cross sections and angular distributions are obtained for the reactions: Λ p → Λ p, Λ p → Σ o p and Λ p → Λ p π o . In the elastic channel, no strong evidence is seen near the Σ o p threshold for the presence of a 3 S 1 resonance, which has been reported, although there is some evidence for a small enhancement in this mass region. There is evidence for the presence of P-waves and probably also D-waves above about 800 MeV/ c , but not below this momentum.

K+ n charge exchange near 1 GeV

We present cross sections and angular distributions for the reaction K + d → K o pp at 865, 970, 1210, 1365 and 1585 MeV/ c . Making corrections for deuterium effects, we observe the following features of the elastic charge exchange process K + n → K 0 p: a) the c.m. angular distribution becomes increasingly peripheral as the momentum increases from 800 to 1600 MeV/ c ; b) the forward amplitude is largely real. Attempts to describe the data either in terms of a Regge model or in terms of dominance by an elastic P 1 2 isoscalar KN resonance are discussed.
