We have measured the polarization of Λ's in inclusive pp and K−p reactions and of Λ¯'s in p¯p interactions at a beam momentum of 176 GeV/c. Data were taken in the beam-fragmentation region with hyperon transverse momenta from 0.2 to 1.5 GeV/c. The P¯ produced Λ¯'s have the same magnitude and sign of polarization as the p-produced Λ's, whereas the Λ's from K−p interactions are more highly polarized and in the opposite direction.

We have observed decays of the ϒ(1S) into hadronic final states containing high-energy photons. These are interpreted as coming from the decay ϒ(1S)→γ+gluon+gluon. We compare the shape of the observed photon energy spectrum with several theoretical predictions and deduce the value of the strong-coupling constant αs and the QCD scale parameter ΛMS― (MS― denotes the modified minimal-subtraction scheme) associated with each prediction.

Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e+e− storage ring at DESY, we have obtained evidence for a new charmed resonance which decays into D*±(2010)π∓. The observed mass and width are 2420±6 MeV/c2 and 70±21 MeV/c2, respectively. The fragmentation function is found to be hard, as expected for a state containing a leading charm quark produced by nonresonant e+e− annihilation.

Inclusive production of the Δ (1232) resonance has been measured in 280 GeV/ c muon-proton interactions. The production of the Δ ++ as a function of the variables χ BJ , W , Q 2 , χ F and p T 2 is investigated. The average Δ ++ multiplicity is found to be smaller, by a factor of 6.2 ± 1.2, than the average multiplicity of protons. An upper limit for Δ 0 production is obtained. The net hadronic charge distribution for events with a Δ ++ is presented. The results are compared to the predictions of the Lund and Fire string models.

We have measured the inclusive branching ratio for B→φX to be 0.023±0.006±0.005. The momentum distribution of the φ mesons is compared with that expected from the cascade decays B→F→φ and B→D→φ. .AE

Measurements are presented of the variation with Q 2 (scaling violation) of the hadron multiplicity in deep inelastic muon-proton scattering. An increase in the average multiplicity of both the charged hadrons and K 0 mesons is observed with increasing Q 2 or x Bj for fixed centre-of-mass energy W . The study of the shape of the effective fragmentation function D h ( z , W , Q 2 ) shows that the increase of the particle yield with Q 2 takes place for low z particles. The variation of the hadron distributions with Q 2 is also studied in the current fragmentation region where a decrease in multiplicity is observed. Such effects are expected from QCD.

The reaction γγ→π0η has been investigated with the Crystal Ball detector at the DESY storage ring DORIS II. Formation of δ(980) and A2(1320) has been observed with γγ partial widths Γγγ(A2)=1.14±0.20±0.2 6 keV and Γγγ(δ)B(δ→πη)=0.19±0.07 −0.07+0.10 keV.

Results on inclusive ϕ production inK−p interactions at 110 GeV/c are presented. The production cross section is found to be larger than in πp andpp interactions at similar energies, suggesting OZI allowed\(s\bar s\) fusion to be the dominant mechanism in ϕ production. Thex distributions of ϕ and\(\bar K^{*0} \) are found to be similar to each other over the entirex range suggesting an overall strangeness suppression factor of 0.20±0.04 in the sea to be the dominant source of the difference in the cross section for ϕ and\(\bar K^{*0} \). There is no evidence of a narrowφπ− state around 2.1 GeV/c2 as suggested byK+ experiments, but there is some excess of events in the region 1.94−1.98 GeV/c2 consistent with theF-meson mass as observed ine+e− experiments.
Errors contain both statistics and systematics.
F(XL) is invariant cross section.
Exclusive ϱ 0 production has been measured in 120, 200 and 280 GeV muon-proton interactions at high Q 2 (1 GeV 2 < Q 2 < 25 GeV 2 ) and W (6 GeV < W < 19 GeV). The photoproduction cross section decreases as 1/ Q 4 . A shallow t distribution, typical of a hard scattering process is observed and the ϱ 0 is found to be dominantly in the helicity zero spin state. The ϱ 0 s are mainly produced by transverse photons and s -channel helicity conservation seems to be invalid. The data cannot be described by the vector meson dominance model. These data show that at high Q 2 even exclusive ϱ 0 muoproduction is a hard scattering process and that the soft hadron-like properties of the photon have disappeared.
