Measurements of the invariant cross sections for the reaction p(400 GeV)+(Li6, Be,C,Al,Cu,Ta)→(π±, K±)+X at laboratory angles from 70° to 160° are reported. Upper limits for p¯ production are given. Comparisons of the data are made using several scaling variables. Measurements ofKs0, Λ and\(\bar \Lambda \) production in π− nucleus (C, Cu, Pb) interactions are presented. The experiment was carried out with the streamer chamber spectrometer RISK using a π− beam of ∼40 GeV/c and a trigger requiring a secondary charged particle with transverse momentum above 1.1 GeV/c. Production cross sections, relative production rates and distributions of Feynmanx and transverse momentum squared as well as correlations between theV0 and the trigger particle are presented. The results are compared and found to be in agreement withKs0, Λ and\(\bar \Lambda \) data from untriggered π−p and π−C interactions, except for the relative production rate of antilambdas which is about to times larger in high-pt collisions. Our results can be well interpreted within the dual topological unitarization model.

Invariant cross sections for hadron production (π±,K±,p and\(\bar p\)) by protons off C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb nuclei have been measured at 70 GeV for theP∧ range from 1 up to 4.65 GeV/c. TheA-dependence of the invariant cross section is not described by the exponentialAα(P∧), which points to the presence of secondary hadron absorption in nuclei.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$ and $\bar{p}$ in $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These data provide important baseline spectra for comparisons with identified particle spectra in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter $T_{\rm inv}$, mean transverse momentum $<p_T>$ and yield per unit rapidity $dN/dy$ at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $\sqrt{s}$ in $p+p$ and $p+\bar{p}$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $m_T$ scaling, $x_T$ scaling on the $p_T$ spectra between different energies. To discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $p+p$ collisions, the measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading-order or next-to-leading-logarithmic perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations.

New data are reported on antiproton annihilations at rest with production of Λ and K s 0 , using a streamer chamber with 3 He, 4 He and 20 Ne as gas targets. The data include Λ, K s 0 , ΛK s 0 and K s 0 K S 0 production rates and momentum distributions, π − momentum spectra, mean numbers of charged particles generally and of negatively charged particles separately for different reaction channels. The yields are compared to simple combinatorial calculations based on the extreme assumptions of Λ production via B = 1 or via B = 0 ( K ̄ rescattering) annihilations. Λ and K s 0 momentum spectra are compared to simple model calculations where B = 0 and B = 1 annihilations with and without final-state interactions are considered. A review of existing data on Λ and K s 0 production is presented, showing the dependence on the p ̄ momentum and on the mass number of the target.

Measurements of charged pion and kaon production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40, 80 and 158 AGeV are presented. These are compared with data at lower and higher energies as well as with results from p+p interactions. The mean pion multiplicity per wounded nucleon increases approximately linearly with s_NN^1/4 with a change of slope starting in the region 15-40 AGeV. The change from pion suppression with respect to p+p interactions, as observed at low collision energies, to pion enhancement at high energies occurs at about 40 AGeV. A non-monotonic energy dependence of the ratio of K^+ to pi^+ yields is observed, with a maximum close to 40 AGeV and an indication of a nearly constant value at higher energies.The measured dependences may be related to an increase of the entropy production and a decrease of the strangeness to entropy ratio in central Pb+Pb collisions in the low SPS energy range, which is consistent with the hypothesis that a transient state of deconfined matter is created above these energies. Other interpretations of the data are also discussed.
