Inclusive Delta++ Production in K+ p Interactions at 8.2-GeV/c and 16-GeV/c

The reaction K + p→ Δ ++ (1236)+ anything is studied at beam momenta 8.2 and 16 GeV/ c and compared with other Δ ++ producing reactions. We find that the low-mass Δ ++ π − enhancement affects the shapes of Δ ++ inclusive distributions. The triple-Regge formula is found to be consistent with the data. Dual properties of this formula are successfully tested.

The inclusive cross sections for π − , π 0 , π + and η production in K − p interactions at 14.3 GeV/ c are calculated. The invariant cross section distributions are presented and compared in the whole phase space for π + and π 0 , and in the backward c.m. region for π − . In the fragmentation regions, the charged pion production is analysed in terms of the triple-Regge model.

Inclusive Photoproduction of Charged Particles in the Forward Hemisphere

We report measurements of the invariant cross section in the forward hemisphere for inclusive photoproduction of π±, K±, p, and p¯ from hydrogen and deuterium with an incident photon energy of 18 GeV. A small amount of data was also taken at incident energies of 9 and 13 GeV. The measurements were made using the SLAC 20-GeV/c spectrometer, and a bremsstrahlung-subtraction technique was used to obtain the cross sections at the specified incident energy. The data are compared with those from lower-energy experiments and interpreted within the context of the Mueller-Regge model and the constituent-interchange model.

Energy Dependence of the Parameter C(NN) at 2-GeV/c, 3-GeV/c, 4-GeV/c and 6-GeV/c

We have measured the spin-spin correlation parameter CNN at 2, 3, 4, and 6 GeV/c over the |t| range of 0.1 to 2.0 (GeV/c)2 and have observed a striking energy and |t| dependence in CNN. Polarization data were simultaneously collected and are compared to previous results.

Coherent Photoproduction of Vector Mesons on Deuterium at 5.5-GeV

Coherent photoproduction of vector mesons ρ0, ω, φ, and ρ′ on deuterium was studied using the SLAC 82-in. bubble chamber exposed to linearly polarized photons at 5.5 GeV. The reaction channel γd→π+π−d was studied in detail. Nine independent density-matrix parameters have been determined from the ρ0 decay distribution. ρ production in this channel was found to proceed almost completely through natural-parity exchange for |t|≤0.25 GeV2 and conserve s-channel c.m. helicity for |t|≤0.15 GeV2. A measurement of differential cross section for this channel has been made.

Small Angle p p Elastic Scattering at Energies Between 285-MeV and 572-MeV

Differential cross sections for elastic p−p scattering have been measured at 285, 348, 398, 414, 455, 497, 530, and 572 MeV kinetic energy. The experiment was performed at the CERN synchrocyclotron, using multiwire proportional chambers placed directly in a proton beam. Scattering was observed for 1.5°≲θ≲10° in the laboratory system. The ratio αp of the real and imaginary parts of the non-spin-flip nuclear forward amplitude was derived from the interference between the Coulomb and nuclear amplitudes. The values obtained are model-dependent, but in this energy range αp is positive and decreases with energy. Qualitatively good agreement with dispersion-relation predictions is observed.

Measurements on the Differential Cross-Section of the pi0 Photoproduction on Hydrogen

The differential cross section for photoproduction of π° on hydrogen has been measured in a photon energy range of 560-690 MeV and for production angles in the interval 90°-105° in the centre of mass system. The experiment detects the recoil proton and a π°-decay photon in coincidence, using optical spark chambers and a lead glass Cerenkov counter. Presented cross sections, based on 35 000 events recorded on film, are in good agreement with recent phase shift analysis.

Pi- Electroproduction Off Deuterium Above the Resonance Region

The reactions e + d → e ' + p S + p + π − and e + d → e ' + n S + n + π + were measured detecting electron and pion in coincidence at an invariant hadronic mass of 2.19 GeV. The measurements were performed at electron four-momentum transfer squared of f 2 = 0.70 and 1.35 GeV 2 in the range of t = ( γ v − π ) 2 between t min and −1.0 GeV 2 . The cross section d 2 σ / dtdφ of the reaction e + n → e' + p + π − was determined.

Observation of the K* (1780) in the Reaction K+ p --> K0(s) pi+ p at 10-GeV/c

An analysis of the Kπ-system in the mass region of the K ∗ (1780), based on a sample of 46000 K s o π + final states, is presented. Evidence for a relatively narrow width, τ ≈ 100 MeV, and for the spin parity assignment J P = 3 − is found.
