We have observed the D(1285), E(1420) and δ(975) mesons produced in 12 and 15 GeV/ c π − p interactions at the CERN Omega Spectrometer. Production cross sections and decay branching ratios are presented. Analysis of the decay D(1285) → δ (975) π favours a spin-parity assignment of 1 + .

Data on the reaction π − p → π + π − π 0 have been taken at 12 and 15 GeV/ c with the CERN Omega multiparticle spectrometer. In a 3-pion partial-wave analysis strong production of A 2 0 (1310) and ω ∗ (1675) is observed. Total and differential cross sections are determined and density matrix elements presented as a function of t in the t - and s -channel frames. The energy dependence of A 2 0 production is studied, and a comparison of ω(780), A 2 0 (1310) and ω ∗ (1675) production is made.

The production of the f 0 (1270) has been studied in the reaction π − p → π + π − n at 12 and 15 GeV/ c in the momentum transfer range 0.02 to 0.80 GeV 2 . Differential and total cross sections for the reaction π − p → f 0 n have been determined. The f 0 decay density matrix elements have been evaluated requiring all the matrix eigenvalues to be non-negative. The relative unnatural and natural parity exchange contributions to the f 0 production have been studied. The results are compared with a Regge exchange model formulated in terms of the pion and A 2 exchanges including cut contributions.

Total hadronic (gamma, p) and (gamma, d) cross-sections from 4 to 18 gev/c

Photoabsorption cross sections in hydrogen and deuterium have been measured from 3.7 to 17.9 GeV. The energy dependences are similar to those of strong-interaction total cross sections, as expected from the vector-meson-dominance model. The magnitude of σT(γp) can be compared with data from γp→ρ0p to determine a γ−p coupling constant, γρ24π=0.37±0.03. This value disagrees with that obtained on the ρ mass shell, and hence there is only qualitative agreement with the vector-meson-dominance model.

Using 13.5-GeV beams at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, we have compared electron and positron inelastic scattering over the range 1.2<|q2|<3.3 (GeV/c)2, 2<ν<9.5 GeV for the four-momentum and energy transfers, respectively. We find the ratio of the cross sections to be e+e−=1.0027±0.0035 (including statistical and systematic effects), with no significant dependence on q2 or ν. This result has appreciably smaller errors than previous attempts to find two-photon-exchange effects in electron or muon scattering.

Total Hadronic Photoabsorption Cross-Sections on Hydrogen and Complex Nuclei from 4-GeV to 18-GeV

Final total cross sections are given for a counter experiment at SLAC on hadronic photon absorption in hydrogen, deuterium, carbon, copper, and lead at incident energies from 3.7 to 18.3 GeV. Some of the nucleon cross sections have been revised and the C, Cu, and Pb data from 3.7 to 7.4 GeV have not been reported previously. The cross sections for complex nuclei vary approximately as A0.9 in our energy range, indicating that the photon interacts, at least partially, as a strongly interacting particle. The energy dependences of the proton and neutron cross sections are also similar to those of hadron-nucleon cross sections and hence may be fitted by a typical Regge parametrization, yielding σT(γp)=(98.7±3.6)+(65.0±10.1)ν−12 μb and σT(γn)=(103.4±6.7)+(33.1±19.4)ν−12 μb, where ν is the photon energy in GeV. These extrapolate to the same value at infinite energy, consistent with Pomeranchukon exchange, and the energy-dependent part yields an isovector-to-isoscalar-exchange ratio of 0.18 ± 0.06. While these observations are qualitatively consistent with vector meson dominance, quantitatively vector dominance fails in relating our results to ρ photo-production on hydrogen or to experiments determining the ρ-nucleon cross section. Vector dominance cannot be rescued by assuming that the ρ-photon coupling constant depends on the photon mass. Instead, an additional short-range interaction is apparently required, possibly due to a heavy (≳ 2 GeV / c2) vector meson or to a bare-photon interaction. The additional interaction accounts for approximately 20% of the total photoabsorption cross section.

Cross sections, differential cross sections, density matrix elements and statistical tensors are given for the reactions π + p → ( ϱ 0 , ω ) Δ ++ at 13.2 GeV/ c . A discussion of the results in terms of particle exchanges, quark model or dipole coupling constraints, and the equal phase hypothesis is presented in some detail for the high statistics ϱ 0 Δ ++ channel.

Analysis of K- K+ and pi- pi+ Final States in 13-GeV K- p Interactions

The differential cross sections and density matrix elements for the φ and ϱ 0 mesons have been measured in the reactions K − p → K − K + ( Λ , Σ 0 ) and K − p → π − π + ( Λ , Σ 0 ) at 13 GeV using a wire chamber spectrometer. The analysis shows that while the vector meson production is dominated by the natural parity exchange amplitude, some unnatural parity exchange is also required. Furthermore the φ and ϱ natural exchange cross sections are identical in shape and have the 2:1 relative strength expected in the quark model with K ∗ and K ∗∗ exchange degeneracy. The analysis of the clear peak-dip ϱ 0 − ω interference pattern observed in the π − π + data indicates that the ω production is in phase with the ϱ and of similar magnitude. Both the S ∗ and f′ meson are clearly observed in this experiment. The S ∗ data are found to be consistent with S ∗ parameters deduced from ππ scattering analyses. The f′ density matrix elements and a new limit of the f′ → π − π + branching ratio are presented.

Study of the $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-$ reaction in the energy range from 2.6 to 8.0 GeV

The $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-$ cross section and charged-kaon electromagnetic form factor are measured in the $e^+e^-$ center-of-mass energy range ($E$) from 2.6 to 8.0 GeV using the initial-state radiation technique with an undetected photon. The study is performed using 469 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II $e^+e^-$ collider at center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV. The form factor is found to decrease with energy faster than $1/E^2$, and approaches the asymptotic QCD prediction. Production of the $K^+K^-$ final state through the $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ intermediate states is observed. The results for the kaon form factor are used together with data from other experiments to perform a model-independent determination of the relative phases between single-photon and strong amplitudes in $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)\to K^+K^-$ decays. The values of the branching fractions measured in the reaction $e^+e^- \to K^+K^-$ are shifted relative to their true values due to interference between resonant and nonresonant amplitudes. The values of these shifts are determined to be about $\pm5\%$ for the $J/\psi$ meson and $\pm15\%$ for the $\psi(2S)$ meson.
