Production and Decay of a High Mass I = 3/2 Baryon Enhancement in 10.3-GeV/c pi+ p Interactions

A high-mass Δ resonance is observed in several final states from π + p interactions at 10.3 GeV/ c . We obtain fitted mass and width values for this structure of 1871 ± 22 MeV and 205 ± 43 MeV, respectively. The branching ratios for decays to π + p, p π + π 0 , n π + π + and Σ + K + are found to be 0.48 ± 0.15, 0.26 ± 0.07, 0.24 ± 0.07 and 0.03 ± 0.01, respectively. The Δϱ, Δω differential cross sections and the ϱ 0 density matrix elements are examined.

Partial, Total, and Resonance Production Cross-Sections for the Reactions pi+ p --> Four Prong Final States at 10.3-GeV/c

The major production channels of four-prong final states resulting from π+p interactions at a center-of-mass energy of 4.5 GeV are studied. In addition to total production cross sections, comprehensive listings of partial and resonance production cross sections are also given for each final state of interest. All final states, including nπ+π+π+π−, are found to exhibit copious resonance production.

Cross sections, differential cross sections, single and joint spin-density matrix elements are given for the reactions π+p→(ρ0, ω)Δ++ at 10.3 GeV/c. Correlations between the vector-meson and the Δ++ decay angular distributions are observed. A discussion of the results in terms of particle exchange, SU(3) symmetry, quark additivity, and the equal-phase hypothesis is presented. The amplitudes for the process π+p→ρ0Δ++ are extracted by a model-dependent analysis and compared with current theoretical predictions.

We report measurements of the inclusive π− and π+ yields in 24-GeV proton-proton collisions at θc.m.=90° for 2.2≤PT≤2.8 GeV/c. There is a high-PT deficit, rather than excess, at this incident energy.

Inclusive and semi-inclusive cross sections for gp0 production in 100, 200, and 360 GeV/c π−p interactions are presented. Differential cross sections for ρ0 production as functions of c.m. rapidity and transverse momentum are compared with the corresponding differential cross sections for pion production. Effects of various methods of estimating background on the values obtained for ρ0 production cross sections are discussed. About 10% of the final-state charged pions appear to come from ρ0 decay. Thus, while ρ0 production and decay is a significant source of final-state pions, other sources must contribute the majority of the produced pions.

A comparison of the observed γ spectrum is made with the spectra computed assuming that the π 0 momentum distribution is identical to that of the observed π + or π − .

ANGULAR DEPENDENCE OF HIGH P(T) pi0 PRODUCTION

The π0 inclusive cross section for c.m. production angles θ=90° and 22°>~θ>~5° at c.m. energies of s=23 and 53 GeV has been measured. This cross section is strongly dependent on both θ and s at small angles. The hypothesis of radial scaling is shown to be incapable of incorporating both θ and s dependence of the cross section. A recent quantum-chromodynamics calculation is in qualitative agreement with our results.

Polarization of Muoproduced J/psi (3100)

The polarization and Q2 dependence of muoproduced ψ→μ+μ− have been analyzed in a magnetized-steel calorimeter at Fermilab. The reaction γVN→ψN is found to be helicity conserving. Even after allowance for possible Q2 dependence of the decay angular distribution, the ψ muoproduction cross section falls more steeply in Q2 than predicted by ψ dominance.

Experimental Study of Neutral Current and Charged Current Neutrino Cross-Sections

Samples of 9200 muon-neutrino and 3800 muon-antineutrino interactions on nuclei were obtained with the fine-grain calorimeter of the CHARM Collaboration at the CERN 200 GeV narrow-band neutrino beam. The interactions were classified as either neutral-current or charged-current processes on an event-by-event basis. Neutral-current and charged-current cross sections in neutrino and antineutrino interactions are presented. From these results we deduce a statistically significant contribution of right-handed coupling to the neutral hadronic current, and a value of the electroweak mixing angle corresponding to sin 2 θ = 0.220 ± 0.014.

Experimental Study of Differential Cross-sections in Charged Current Neutrino and Anti-neutrinos Interactions

Inclusive neutrino and antineutrino charged-current interactions were studied using the electronic detector of the CHARM Collaboration exposed to the narrow-band beam of the CERN SPS. The relative contributions of quarks and antiquarks to the neutrino cross sections were deduced from the differential cross sectionsdσ/d y . The x and Q 2 dependence of the structure functions F 2 and F 3 were measured. Scaling violations were observed, in qualitative agreement with QCD. A value of the mass scale parameter of QCD,Λ = [0.29 ± 0.12 (stat.) ± 0.10 (syst.)] GeV, was deduced in a leading-order approximation, following the method of Buras and Gaemers.
