We report our final results from the analysis of the full high statistics sample of events of the reaction ν μ + e − → μ − + ν c collected with the CHARM II detector in the CERN wide-band neutrino beam during the years 1988 to 1991. From a signal of 15758 ± 324 inverse muon decay events we derived, inthe Born approximation, a value of (16.51 ± 0.93) × 10 −42 cm 2 GeV −1 for the asymptotic cross section slope σ E ν , in goodagreement with the Standard Model prediction of 17.23 × 10 −42 cm 2 GeV −1 . The result constrains the scalar coupling of the electron and the muon to | g LL S | 2 < 0.475 at 90% CL.

Limits on the production of direct photons in 200-A/GeV S-32 + Au collisions

Phys.Rev.Lett. 76 (1996) 3506-3509, 1996.
Inspire Record 404322 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.19585

A search for the production of direct photons in S+Au collisions at 200AGeV has been carried out in the CERN-WA80 experiment. For central collisions the measured photon excess at each pT, averaged over the range 0.5≤pT≤2.5GeV/c, corresponded to 5.0% of the total inclusive photon yield with a statistical error of σstat=0.8% and a systematic error of σsyst=5.8%. Upper limits on the invariant yield for direct photon production at the 90% C.L. are presented. Possible implications for the dynamics of high-energy heavy-ion collisions are discussed.

Measurement of hadron and lepton pair production at 130-GeV < s**(1/2) < 140-GeV at LEP

Phys.Lett.B 370 (1996) 195-210, 1996.
Inspire Record 404604 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.48014

We report on the first measurements of e + e − annihilations into hadrons and lepton pairs at centre-of-mass energies between 130 GeV and 140 GeV. In a total luminosity of 5 pb −1 collected with the L3 detector at LEP we select 1577 hadronic and 401 lepton-pair events. The measured cross sections and leptonic forward-backward asymmetries agree well with the Standard Model predictions.

Two photon production of omega pairs

Inspire Record 403304 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.44942

A maximum likelihood analysis of ARGUS data on two-photon production of π + π + π 0 π 0 π − π − is presented. A small fraction of events is due to the production of omega pairs. The γγ → ωω cross section has its maximum value close to threshold.

Inclusive production of strange particles p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 630-GeV with UA1

We have analysed a sample of 2.36 million minimum bias events produced in p p collisions at s =630 GeV in the UA1 experiment at the CERN Sp p S collider. We have studied the production of K S 0 , Λ and Λ particles with transverse momenta ( p t ) up to 7 GeV/c and K ± up to 2 GeV/c. The kaon data are compared with a recent QCD prediction and are found to be in good agreement. The < p t > for K S 0 , Λ and Λ is seen to increase as a function of the charged particle multiplicity and is compared with charged particle production.

We report on the study of charm baryons decaying to Λ c + : Λ c ★+ (2625) → Λ c + π + π − , Λ c ★+ (2593) → Λ c + π + π − , Σ c 0 → Λ c + π − and Σ c ++ → Λ c + π + . We present a confirmation of the state Λ c ∗+ (2593) and determine its mass difference to be M ( Λ c ★+ (2593)) − M ( Λ c + ) = 309.2 ± 0.7 ± 0.3 MeV/ c 2 . We determine the lower limit on the resonant branching ratio to be BR (Λ c ★+ (2593) → Σ c π ± Λ c ★+ (2593) → Λ c + π + π − ) > 0.51 (90% c.l.). We also measure the mass differences M ( Σ c 0 ) − M ( Λ c + ) = 166.6±0.5±0.6 MeV/ c 2 and M ( Σ c ++ ) − M ( Λ c + ) = 167.6±0.6±0.6 MeV/ c 2 . Finally, we measure the relative photoproduction cross sections for Λ c ★+ and Σ c with respect to the (inclusive) photoproduction cross section for Λ c + .

Pion reabsorption in heavy ion collisions interpreted in terms of the Delta capture process

Phys.Lett.B 366 (1996) 63-68, 1996.
Inspire Record 402497 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.41988

We have measured energy-differential cross sections for π 0 production in 36 Ar+ 197 Au collisions at 95 MeV/u. From an analysis of spectral features due to pion final-state interactions we have estimated the cross section of the capture process Δ + N → N + N in the center-of-mass energy range s ≃2.05−2.25 GeV . Within the frame of BUU calculations, our results support the extension of the detailed-balance principle to broad-width resonances.

Using the CLEO II detector operating at the e + e − Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), we present evidence for new decay modes of the Ξ c + into Ξ 0 π + , Ξ 0 π + π 0 , and Ξ 0 π + π − π + . The branching ratios of these decay modes, relative to Ξ c + → Ξ − π + π + , have been measured to be 0.55±0.13±0.09, 2.34±0.57±0.37, and 1.74±0.42±0.27, respectively.
