Antiproton-proton elastic scattering has been measured at 3.55 GeV/ c in the c.m. angular range from 20° to 77° and from 109° to 160°. Forward elastic scattering shows a structure near t = −0.5 (GeV/ c ) 2 . In the backward region two events are observed.

41 ± 8 events of the type X 0 → γγ have been observed in a study of the reaction π − p → n(X 0 → γγ ) at 1.6 GeV/ c incident π -momentum. This provides further evidence to our previous observation of this new X 0 decay mode and allows the determination of the branching ratio Γ(X 0 →γγ) Γ(X 0 → total =(1.7 ± 0.4)%. The theoretical implications of this result are discussed.
THIS MEASUREMENT WHEN COMBINED WITH THE ETAPRIME PRODUCTION CROSS SECTION OF M. BASILE ET AL., NC 3A, 371 (1971) YIELDS A BR(ETAPRIME --> 2GAMMA) OF 1.7 +- 0.4 PCT.
Substantial production of the resonances ϱ, f and ω has been observed in this reaction. In contrast with the channel p p → 2π + 2π − , associated production of resonances was found to occur. The behaviour of the associated production of ω-mesons with other resonances is shown to be consistent with some very simple assumptions. Alternative methods of displaying data for p p → ππω are discussed; it is shown that the longitudinal phase plot for this reaction is unlike that obtained for any previously reported reaction. Reasonable agreement for the behaviour of this channel is found with the multiperipheral model of Chan, Łoskiewicz and Allison.

We have measured the differential cross section of the reaction π − p→ π − p in the range 0.92 ⩽ cos θ c.m. ⩽ 0.99 at 15 momenta between 0.875 and 1.580 GeV/ c . The results we report complete the available data; previous measurements of this reaction do not extend beyond cos θ c.m. =0.90. We compare our experimental results with dispersion relation predictions. A comparison of our results for B , the slope of the differential cross section, with earlier results shows many discrepancies.

In this paper we present the π + p differential elastic scattering cross sections at five momenta between 0.6 and 0.8 GeV/ c . The data were collected in a bubble chamber exposure and consequently are susceptible to different systematic errors from counter experiments. Our results are generally in good agreement with those of counter experiments in the same momentum range and with the predictions of the various elastic partial wave analyses. The majority of partial wave analyses do not however yield parameters which fit our data in detail without modification.

We present complete results concerning the five reactions K − p → Λω , K − p → Λφ , K − p → Σ 0 ϱ and K − p → Σ 0 φ . The experimental data are well described by exchange mechanisms and the agreement with the SU(3) symmetry predictions is excellent.

A study is made of η 0 production in p p → 3π + 3π − π 0 (7500 events) at an incident momentum of 720 MeV/ c . The reaction is dominated by production of ω 0 (≈68 o/o). The η o production has been studied by means of two independent methods: the first, a study of correlations between the (4 π ) ± and (5 π ) 0 and the (3 π ) 0 systems, circumvents the problem of ω 0 reflections. The second attempts to isolate the η 0 4π channel by means of rigorous selections using the decay properties of η 0 and ω 0 . The results of the two methods are consistent and confirnm the production of σ +- , D 0 and E 0 with the decays ifD 0 → σ ± π ± → η 0 π + π ( su −), E 0 → σ ± π ∓ → η ( su 0) π + π − , E 0 → η 0 π + π − .

The differential cross sections for the reaction γ + n → π 0 + n have been measured at pions angles of 45°, 60°, 105°, 120° and 140° in the c.m.s. for photon energies of 500–900 MeV. Both π 0 meson and recoil neutron from a liquid deuterium target were detected with a pair of Čerenkov counters combined with lead spark chambers and a hodoscope consisting of 16 modules of plastic scintillation counters.
Experimental results are presented for the available channels in the 1.2 GeV/ c π + p interaction. An isobaric model with incoherent addition of the amplitudes is used to determine the π, Δ and N ∗ abundance rates in the π + π o p final state. The multipole parameters in the density matrix of the Δ ++ are determined as functions of its production angle.

We have measured total cross sections for neutrons on protons, deuteriom, beryllium, carbon, aluminium, iron, copper, cadmium, tungsten, lead, and uranium for momenta between 30 and 300 GeV/ c . The measurements were carried out in a small-angle neutral beam at Fermilab. Typical accuracy of the data is 0.5 to 1%. The cross sections are consistent with an A 0.77±0.01 dependence over the entire momentum range. The cross sections are compared with theoretical predictions. Agreement is found only if inelastic screening is included. Nuclear radii obtained from our data are in good agreement with previous determinations.

Cross sections for γd and γn interactions and photoproduction of ϱ 0 and ω are studied at 4.3 GeV, using a linearly polarized photon beam in a deuterium bubble chamber. We find that σ T (γ n ) ⋍ σ T (γ p ) within about 5% and that the γn average charge multiplicity is lower than γp by 0.42±0.09. About 4000 ϱ 0 events and 70 coherent ω events are observed. We present total and differential cross sections for both xoherent and incoherent ϱ 0 production on deuterium, as well as decay angular distributions and density-matrix elements. We find that the t -channel isospin-one exchange amplitude in γ N → ϱ 0 N (e.g. A 2 exchange) is at most 5–13% of the dominant isoscalar amplituds. The ϱ 0 production mechanism is dominantly s -channel helicity-conserving (SHC) on both neutrons and protons. We find that relative to the SHC amplitudes, the single and double helicity-flip amplitudes at the γϱ 0 vertex are of the order of 10–15% for | t | > 0.25 GeV 2 , and have the same sign on both nucleons. This shows that helicity-flip is mainly due to isoscalar exchanges. The ratio of ω to ϱ 0 coherent forward cross sections is found to be 0.16±0.04. The natural-parity exchange part of γ N → ω N is strongly dominated by isoscalar exchanges, and the magnitude of the isovector-exchange is consistent with zero.

The results are presented of two partial-wave analyses of the (3π) − system in 30 000 events of the reaction π − p → π − π − π + p at 11.2 GeV/ c . Both techniques incorporate the assumptions of the isobar model and are (a) the University of Illinois program which fits in terms of the (3π) density matrix elements and (b) an amplitude parametrisaton including possible effects of both spin non-flip and spin flip at the baryon vertex. The results obtained with these independent programs are found to be very close.

The photoproduction of the ψ(3100) meson from a beryllium target has been measured using an 11.8-GeV bremsstrahlung beam. The energy and angular dependence of the measured spectra may be obtained from an elastic nucleon cross section of the form dσdt=(1.01±0.20)exp[(1.25±0.20)t] nb/GeV2. This cross section is exceedingly small in comparison with those of the other vector mesons.

The two coherent reactions π+d → dπ+π+π− and π+d → → dπ+π+π+π0 are studied in the 2 m DBC at the incoming momentum of 11.7 GeV/c. The production cross-sections are measured:σ=(0.37±±0.06) mb andσ=(0.24±0.05) mb respectively. The two reactions are analysed in the different LPS configurations. The dσ/dt′ distribution for the two reactions displays the same exp[−At′] shape withA⋍37 (GeV/c)−2 in both cases, thus indicating that the differential cross-sections are dominated by the deuteron form factor. The coherent inclastic interaction contains the channel π+d → θ0π+d with a cross-sectionσ==(20±5) µb and a signal for the B+-meson of about 12 µb. The four-pion masses display structures below 2 GeV/c.

Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of protons on 2 H, 3 H, 3 He and 4 He have been measured at 600 MeV. Proton-deuterium elastic scattering is investigated in a four-momentum transfer square t -range corresponding to Coulomb-nuclear interference in order to determine the nucleon-nucleon amplitudes at 600 MeV. For the other nuclei, we investigate the t -range corresponding to the first and second maximum, in order to determine the mechanism of the nuclear process. A few physical comments on the results are made.

We report the result of a brief experiment to measure the cross section for photoproduction of Jψ(3100). At a mean energy of 55 GeV we find this cross section per nucleon to be 37.5 ± 8.2 (statistical) ± 4 (systematic) nb. The result establishes the previously indicated rise in Jψ photoproduction on protons above 20 GeV and suggests that the rise has occurred by 55 GeV.

At a square of the momentum transfer of 1.0 (GeV/c)2 the elastic scattering of electrons on deuterons has been measured at electron scattering angles of 8°, 60°, and 82°. From these data we have extracted a value of B(q2)=(0.59±1.20)×10−5 for the deuteron. This measurements extends the range in momentum transfer by almost a factor of 2 over the previous measurements.

We have made the first measurement of the spin-spin correlation parameter CSS in pp elastic scattering at 6 GeV/c over the |t| range from 0.05 to 1.5 (GeV/c)2. The measured CSS data points are all negative, and their absolute values increase with |t|. The results are compared with some existing attempts to describe the pp scattering process.

We have measured the total cross-section difference for pp scattering in initial spin states parallel to the beam direction at beam momenta of 1.17, 1.47, 1.69, 1.97 and 2.49 GeV/ c . This measurement was done in a standard transmission experiment. A striking energy dependence is observed with a maximum difference of −16.9 mb at P lab = 1.47 GeV/ c .

We have measured elastic scattering of 5 and 6 GeV photons on hydrogen and deuterium in the angular range 10–50 mrad. On hydrogen we observe a forward diffraction peak with a slope of 8.5 (GeV/ c ) −2 . The extrapolated forward cross sections in units μ b/(GeV/ c ) 2 are 0.82 ± 0.04 at 5 GeV and 0.79 ± 0.04 at 6 GeV. They are consistent with the calculated amplitudes obtained from total cross section measurements via the optical theorem and dispersion relations assuming negligible contributions of spin-dependent amplitudes. Deuterium cross sections show a transition from coherent scattering at low | t | to incoherent scattering at higher | t |. They indicate that the isovector exchange amplitude a 1 is very small compared to the isoscalar a 0 . We obtain |a 1 | 2 /|a 0 +a 1 | 2 =0.13±0.09 , Re (a 0 a ∗ 1 )/|a 0 +a 1 | 2 =0.0±0.03, at 5 GeV , |a 1 | 2 /|a 0 +a 1 | 2 =−0.12±0.15 , Re (a 0 a ∗ 1 )/|a 0 +a 1 | 2 =0.10±0.04, at 6 GeV .

Photons of 3 GeV and 5 GeV were scattered on 7 different elements, ranging from Be to Au, and detected with a pair spectrometer. The angular distributions show diffractive patterns consistent with known nuclear sizes. Forward cross sections are 20–30% lower than expected from an A 2 dependence. This shadowing effect is qualitatively explained by photon interactions via intermediate hadronic states.

We have measured the difference between the pp total cross-sections for parallel and anti-parallel longitudinal spin states at beam momenta of 3 and 6 GeV/ c . These results, combined with our previous measurements, at lower momenta, are useful in clarifying a striking structure appearing at around 1.5 GeV/ c . We have also measured for the first time, the spin-spin correlation parameter C LL ( t ) in pp elastic scattering at 6 GeV/ c . We observe evidence for an exchange with A 1 -like quantum-numbers.

We report results from a measurement of the inclusive processes pp→Xp and pd→Xd in the range 5<Mx2s<0.1, 0.01≲|t|≲0.1 (GeV/c)2, and incident proton momenta of 65, 154, and 372 GeV/c. Both pp and pd data show an exponential t dependence and a dominant 1Mx2 behavior for Mx2s≲0.05. By comparing pp and pd data we test factorization and, using the Glauber model, we measure the XN total cross section, σXN=43±10 mb.

We have determined the coherent KS regeneration amplitudes on various nuclei, from 20 to 140 GeV/c, using a particularly systematics-free technique. Our results are well represented by |(f−f¯)k|=2.23A0.758p−0.614 mb. This p dependence corresponds to an effective "nuclear" intercept ``αω(0)''=0.386±0.009, whereas the elementary value is αω(0)=0.44±0.01. Comparisons are made with data below 25 GeV/c, and with optical-model predictions. The latter work only if "αω(0)" is postulated to hold for the elementary amplitudes.

We have measured the inclusive production of J ψ in 16 and 22 GeV π − copper collisions in a wide aperture magnetic spectrometer. The cross section per Cu nucleus for x > 0 corrected for branching ratio is 64 ± 38 nb at 16 GeV and 196 ± 38 nb at 22 GeV. As threshold is approached, the mean values of the Feynman x distribution increase and the cross section for J ψ production drops steeply. This can be understood in terms of the quark-fusion model where the antiquark content of the pion makes an increasingly significant contribution as M 2 s increases.

Measurements of inelastic electron scattering have been made in the range 2.2 < ν < 3.8 GeV and 0.1 < | Q 2 | < 0.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 , on a selection of nuclei ranging from hydrogen and deuterium to uranium, by measuring the scattered electron only. Detailed calculations have been made of the contribution of radiative tails to the measured yield. The results show a small ‘shadowing’ consistent with other electroproduction experiments, and also with photoproduction experiments in this ν range, but the shadowing decreases rapidly as | Q 2 | increases.

We have measured total hadronic photoproduction cross sections on carbon, copper, and lead. Tagged-photon energies ranged from 20 to 185 GeV for copper and from 45 to 82 GeV for carbon and lead. The energy and A dependence of shadowing were computed by comparing these results to the hydrogen cross section as measured nearly simultaneously with the same apparatus. We observed somewhat more shadowing than did most experiments at lower photon energies.

Inclusive energy spectra of protons, deuterons, and tritons were measured with a telescope of silicon and germanium detectors with a detection range for proton energies up to 200 MeV. Fifteen sets of data were taken using projectiles ranging from protons to Ar40 on targets from Al27 to U238 at bombarding energies from 240 MeV/nucleon to 2.1 GeV/nucleon. Particular attention was paid to the absolute normalization of the cross sections. For three previously reported reactions, He fragment cross sections have been corrected and are presented. To facilitate a comparison with theory the sum of nucleonic charges emitted as protons plus composite particles was estimated and is presented as a function of fragment energy per nucleon in the interval from 15 to 200 MeV/nucleon. For low-energy fragments at forward angles the protons account for only 25% of the nucleonic charges. The equal mass Ar40 plus Ca systems were examined in the center of mass. Here at 0.4 GeV/nucleon Ar40 plus Ca the proton spectra appear to be nearly isotropic in the center of mass over the region measured. Comparisons of some data with firestreak, cascade, and fluid dynamics models indicate a failure of the first and a fair agreement with the latter two. In addition, associated fast charged particle multiplicities (where the particles had energies larger than 25 MeV/nucleon) and azimuthal correlations were measured with an 80 counter array of plastic scintillators. It was found that the associated multiplicities were a smooth function of the total kinetic energy of the projectile. We have measured the differential cross-section and the analyzing power (polarization) for p-He4 elastic scattering at incident kinetic energies of 0.56, 0.80, 1.03, 1.24, and 1.73 GeV. The experiment used a polarized proton beam incident on a liquid helium target and a single arm magnetic spectrometer to detect elastic scattering. Both the differential cross sections and the analyzing power show structure near −t=0.25 (GeV/c)2 which decreases in magnitude with increasing energy. Both multiple scattering and optical model interpretations of the data are discussed. We present data on dimuon production by 16 GeV π + and π − beams on a Cu target. From the data we evaluate, for π − N collisions, the fraction of dimuon events that originate from the annihilation process q q ̄ → μ + μ − . Using this information the experimentally determined cross section for the process q q ̄ → μ + μ − is observed to be in agreement with the Drell-Yan model over a wide range of incident energies. The observed deviations from exact scaling are of the order predicted by QCD calculations for the Q 2 -dependence of the nucleon and the pion structure function.

Virtual photoproduction of J/ ψ mesons has been measured for 280 GeV muon iron interactions in an iron/scintillator calorimeter target. The J/ψ's were identified by their decay into muon pairs. 315 events were observed, about half of which were elastic. The t , Q 2 and v distributions of these elastic events are presented. POSSIBLE EVIDENCE FOR OMEGA(1670) RESONANCE.
The properties of the effect observed in the reaction p p → π + π − π + π − π 0 at 1949 ± 10 MeV /c 2 (τ ≅ 80 MeV /c 2 ) are studied. The ω 0 ϱ 0 , A 2 0 π + π − and π + π − π + π − π 0 (non-resonant) channels are found to be coupled with this object. The assignment I G = 1 − is established and an analysis of the √ s behaviour of the density matrix elements for the final state ω 0 ϱ 0 clearly favour J P = 2 + , 4 + … Comparisons are made with present theoretical schemes describing this mass region.
MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO STRUCTURE OBSERVED AT 1949 +- 10 MEV WITH WIDTH 80 +- 20 MEV.
An experimental analysis of p p interactions between the p p threshold (√ s = 1878 MeV) and √ s = 2 100 MeV leads to clear evidence for an s -channel effect in the reaction p p → π + π − π + π − π 0 at 1949 ± 10 MeV /c 2 (Γ ⋍ 80 MeV /c 2 ) . A comparison is made with the backward elastic scattering and charge-exchange behaviour. An interpretation in terms of an object strongly coupled to mesonic decay modes, with small or middle-sized elasticity ( x ⩽ 0.135 −0.06 +0.13 ) is given. No significant narrow structure is observed in the backward elastic scattering between 1.9 and 2 GeV. The experimental resolution of √ s in this case is 2 MeV.
LOWER MOMENTUM RESULTS WERE REPORTED IN CH. D'ANDLAU ET AL., PL 58B, 223 (1975). TABULATED NUMERICAL VALUES OF DATA ON FIGURES SUPPLIED BY M. LALOUM.
To complete data on resonance electroproduction we constructed an electron spectrometer with large angular and momentum acceptance. As a first result inclusive cross sections for an invariant hadronic mass 1.2<W<1.7 GeV and a four momentum transfer squared 0.5<Q2<1.5 (GeV/c)2 and for values of the polarization parameter 0.1<ɛ<0.25 are presented. Combining our results with the SLAC 4°-data we obtain σL/σT in the specified kinematical range.
