A partial-wave analysis has been performed on the (K − π − π + ) system produced in the reaction K − p → K − π − π + p at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . In the Q mass region it is found that the two dominant states, K ∗ π and Kπ, both in 1 + S wave, are produced with different polarisations, helicity being approximately conserved in the t -channel for K ∗ π and in the s -channel for Kπ. This is in contradiction with the assumption that the amplitude can be factorised into “production” and “decay” parts, and hence that the two amplitudes are fully coherent. The phase variation of the two states do not indicate simple resonance behaviour. It is concluded that the Q-mass enhancement is composite.

In an experiment performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR), 11 e + e − pairs of high invariant mass value (> 2.5 GeV/c 2 ) have been observed. Of these events, 9 can be interpreted as arising from the reaction p + p → J (3.1) + anything. the cross-section for this reaction is estimated and compared with the result obtained at lower centre-of-mass energies.

Diffraction Dissociation of High-Energy Protons in p d Interactions

We report results from a measurement of the inclusive process p+d→X+d in the region 0.03<|t|<0.12 (GeV/c)2 and 5 GeV2<MX2≲0.11plab for incident proton momenta from 150 to 400 GeV/c. We find that in this region, the differential cross section d2σdtdMX2 varies only slowly with energy, falls exponentially with |t|, and behaves to a good approximation as 1MX2. The measurement was performed at Fermilab by detecting slow-recoil deuterons from a deuterium-gas-jet target placed at the internal beam of the accelerator.

Study of s-Channel and t-Channel Helicity Conservation in the Diffractive Part of the Reaction pi+- p --> pi (n pi) at 16-GeV/c

Inspire Record 99495 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.31974

By means of an isospin analysis of the reaction π ± p→ π (N π ) at 16 GeV/ c we have determined the decay angular distributions of the N π system with I= 1 2 produced by isospin zero exchange. Helicity conservation is not observed in the t -channel for the N π mass region below 1.6 GeV, where diffraction dissociation of the proton is supposed to dominate. There are indications for approximate t -channel helicity conservation for N ∗ (1690) production. In the helicity frame, the experimental data are not in agreement with s -channel helicity conservation over the whole N π mass range investigated. Thus the diffractive process N→N π differs both from the process N→N ππ (or π → πππ and K→K ππ ) which approximately conserves t -channel helicity and from the elastic scattering N→N which conserves helicity in the s -channel.

Partial Wave Analysis of the (anti-K0 pi- pi0)-System Produced in the q-Mass Region in K- p --> (anti-K0 pi- pi0) p at 10-GeV/c and 16-GeV/c

A partial-wave analysis has been performed of the diffractively produced low-mass ( K ̄ 0 π − π 0 ) system in the reaction K − p → ( K ̄ 0 π − π 0 ) p at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . Thus information complementary to that derived from the K − p → (K − π + π − )p) channel is obtained. The presence of the K ϱ decay mode, besides the dominant K ∗ (890)π mode, for the state J P = 1 + , is confirmed. It is also confirmed that for this 1 + state the assumption of factorization of the amplitude into “production” and “decay” does not hold: the two decay modes K ∗ π and K ϱ have different polarisation properties (helicity is approximately conserved in the t -channel for the first, in the s -channel for the second). The assumption that the ( K ̄ 0 π − π 0 ) system has isospin I = 1 2 has been tested and found to hold. From the cross sections for the various J P states, assuming I = 1 2 , the cross sections for the (K − π + π − ) system are predicted and compared with the experimental ones. In general, agreement is found.

Rho0 and f Production in pi+ p Interactions

Inclusive ϱ 0 and f(1270) production are analysed in π + p collisions at 8, 16 and 23 GeV/ c . The ϱ 0 cross section increases with energy such that the ϱ 0 /π − ratio remains constant. Emphasis is laid on cross sections as a function of the transverse momentum and of the Feynman x variable. The ϱ 0 's can be attributed to two sources: some ϱ 0 's are centrally produced, but there is a pronounced forward peak. The distribution of leptons coming from ϱ 0 decay is discussed.

A Measurement of the Proton Proton Cross-Section at the CERN ISR

Nucl.Phys.B 98 (1975) 93-99, 1975.
Inspire Record 99601 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.31897

We present a measurement of the total cross section σ t in proton-proton collisions at the CERN ISR. The method involves determination of the total interaction rate and machine luminosity. A two-arm scintillation hodoscope observes ∼ 90% of the total interaction rate, while a streamer chamber is employed for event topologies missed by the main trigger. An increase of about 10% in σ t is observed in the energy range √ s = 23.6 to √ s = 62.8 GeV/ c in agreement with previous experiments.

Inspire Record 99642 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.31932

At the Bonn 2.5 GeV electron synchrotron the first measurements of the target asymmetry for the reaction γ + n ↑ → π − + p have been performed. The negative pions were detected in a magnetic spectrometer at a constant pion c.m. angle of 40° and photon energies between 0.45 GeV and 2.0 GeV. Deuterated butanol was used as target material. The polarization of the deuterons was about 16%. The results show a significant difference from the previously measured π + asymmetry.

Measurement of two particle semiinclusive rapidity distributions at the CERN ISR

We present data on the semi-inclusive distributions of rapidities of secondary particles produced in pp collisions at very high energies. Our experiment was performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). The data given here, at centre-of-mass energies of √s=23 and 62 GeV, include the single-particle distributions and two-particle correlations. The semi-inclusive correlations show pronounced short-range correlation effects which have a width considerably narrower than in the case of inclusive correlations. We show that these short-range effects can be understood empirically in terms of three parameters whose energy and multiplicity dependence are studied. The data support the picture of multiparticle production in which clusters of small multiplicity and small dispersion are emitted with subsequent decay into hadrons.

No definite evidence for structure is found in the p¯p→n¯n cross section between 276 and 963 MeV/c. From these results limits are deduced on properties of the narrow enhancement reported in the p¯p total cross section at 475 MeV/c.
