The differential cross section for elastic scattering of 3.63−GeVc π− mesons on protons was studied with a hydrogen bubble chamber, the emphasis being on large-angle scattering. From 90 to 180° in the barycentric system, the cross section is roughly flat with an average value of 2.7±1.0 μb/sr. Near and at 180°, there may be a slight peak of magnitude 10±6 μb/sr. But if such a peak exists, it is only one-third to one-fourth the size of the 180° peak found in 4.0 GeVc π++p elastic scattering. In addition to comparison with other π−+p and π++p large-angle elastic-scattering measurements, this measurement is compared with large-angle p+p elastic scattering. In the forward hemisphere a small peak or a plateau exists at cos θ*=+0.60. This appears to be a second diffraction maximum such as has been found in lower-energy π+p elastic scattering. A survey of indications of such a second diffraction maximum in other π+p measurements shows that it always occurs in the vicinity of −t=1.2 (GeVc)2, where t is the square of the four-momentum transfer. As the incident momentum increases, the relative size of this second maximum decreases.

Interactions of 781-MeV π+ mesons with protons were investigated using the Brookhaven National Laboratory 14-in. hydrogen bubble chamber. A total of 2305 events was observed. The data were normalized to a total cross section of 22.2 mb, giving partial cross sections σ(π+p→π+p)=9.5±0.5 mb, σ(π+p→π+pπ0)=9.3±0.5 mb, σ(π+p→π+π+n)=2.15±0.17 mb, and a multiple-pion-production cross section of 1.15±0.17 mb. The elastic angular distribution was obtained and is dσdω=(0.25±0.03)+(0.90±0.11)cosθc.m.+(2.57±0.24)cos2θc.m.+(0.19±0.22)cos3θc.m.−(1.73±0.34)cos4c.m.. The kinetic-energy and angular distributions of the outgoing particles in single-pion production are given. The data are compared with other experiments in this energy region and their relevance to the shoulder in the π+p total cross section near 830 MeV is discussed.

A total of 1589 two-prong events were observed in an exposure of the Brookhaven National Laboratory 14-in. bubble chamber at the Cosmotron. The fit to the elastic angular distribution requires terms through cos4θc.m.. The ratio of the inelastic cross sections σ(π−p→π−π+n)σ(π−p→π−π0p) is 3.75±0.46. The π−p→π−π+n reaction is dominated by formation of the π−n isobar and an enhancement in the di-pion mass spectrum previously reported by Kirz. The π−p→π−π0p reaction shows no structure in the effective-mass spectra.

Measurements of the ratio (R) of positron-proton and electron-proton elastic-scattering cross sections have been made, with the square of the four-momentum transfer (q2) equal to 0.20, 0.69, 0.73, 1.54, 2.44, 3.27, 3.79, and 5.00 (GeV/c)2. The measurements, after radiative corrections, are consistent with R=1, with standard errors ranging from ±0.016 to ±0.123. The results give limits for the size of the two-photon effects.

Forward differential cross sections for isospin-1 bosons produced in p+p→d+x+ were measured using a deuteron missing-mass spectrometer at a small angle between 4.0- and 12.3−GeVc incident momentum. Differential cross sections for π+ and ρ+ were extracted from the spectra using phase-space backgrounds. They range from 10.4 to 0.4 μb/sr for π+ and from 1.4 to 0.3 μb/sr for ρ+. A bump near 6 GeVc appears in both dπ and dρ channels. No clear evidence is seen for higher-mass bosons. The possible δ+ cross sections average less than 0.01 μb/sr.

Electron-proton elastic-scattering cross sections have been measured at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center for four-momentum transfers squared q 2 from 1.0 to 25.0 (GeVc)2. The electric (GEp) and magnetic (GMp) form factors of the proton were not separated, since angular distributions were not measured at each q 2. However, values for GMp were derived assuming various relations between GEp and GMp. Several theoretical models for the behavior of the proton magnetic form factor at high values of q 2 are compared with the data.

We have searched the mass region 3.2 to 5.9 GeV for evidence of narrow resonances in e+e−→hadrons. We find no evidence for any such resonances other than the ψ(3695) in this region with a sensitivity ranging from about 12 to 45% of the integrated cross section of the ψ(3695). The more stringent bounds apply to resonances of a few MeV width, while the looser bounds apply to resonances of up to 20 MeV width.

A partial-wave analysis has been performed of the diffractively produced low-mass ( K ̄ 0 π − π 0 ) system in the reaction K − p → ( K ̄ 0 π − π 0 ) p at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . Thus information complementary to that derived from the K − p → (K − π + π − )p) channel is obtained. The presence of the K ϱ decay mode, besides the dominant K ∗ (890)π mode, for the state J P = 1 + , is confirmed. It is also confirmed that for this 1 + state the assumption of factorization of the amplitude into “production” and “decay” does not hold: the two decay modes K ∗ π and K ϱ have different polarisation properties (helicity is approximately conserved in the t -channel for the first, in the s -channel for the second). The assumption that the ( K ̄ 0 π − π 0 ) system has isospin I = 1 2 has been tested and found to hold. From the cross sections for the various J P states, assuming I = 1 2 , the cross sections for the (K − π + π − ) system are predicted and compared with the experimental ones. In general, agreement is found.

We have measured the differential cross section for π−p→η0n at 6.0 GeV/c from 6730 very clean events in which the decay η→π+π−π0 was detected. The reaction γ V p → p π + π − was studied in the W , Q 2 region 1.3–2.8 GeV, 0.3–1.4 GeV 2 using the streamer chamber at DESY. A detailed analysis of rho production via γ V p→ ϱ 0 p is presented. Near threshold rho production has peripheral and non-peripheral contributions of comparable magnitude. At higher energies ( W > 2 GeV) the peripheral component is dominant. The Q 2 dependence of σ ( γ V p→ ϱ 0 p) follows that of the rho propagator as predicted by VDM. The slope of d σ /d t at 〈 Q 2 〉 = 0.4 and 0.8 GeV 2 is within errors equal to its value at Q 2 = 0. The overall shape of the ϱ 0 is t dependent as in photoproduction, but is independent of Q 2 . The decay angular distribution shows that longitudinal rhos dominate in the threshold region. At higher energies transverse rhos are dominant. Rho production by transverse photons proceeds almost exclusively by natural parity exchange, σ T N ⩾ (0.83 ± 0.06) σ T for 2.2 < W < 2.8 GeV. The s -channel helicity-flip amplitudes are small compared to non-flip amplitudes. The ratio R = σ L / σ T was determined assuming s -channel helicity conservation. We find R = ξ 2 Q 2 / M ϱ 2 with ξ 2 ≈ 0.4 for 〈 W 〉 = 2.45 GeV. Interference between rho production amplitudes from longitudinal and transverse photons is observed. With increasing energy the phase between the two amplitudes decreases. The observed features of rho electroproduction are consistent with a dominantly diffractive production mechanism for W > 2 GeV.

We compare production of the low mass K π -resonances by K + and K − beams in the non-charge-exchange reactions K ± p → K 0 s π ± p at 10 GeV/ c . High statistics data, obtained with the same apparatus, allow extraction of the K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) production amplitudes corresponding to unnatural and natural parity exchange in the t -channel. The NPE-part dominates in both charge states. Its t -dependence shows a strong crossover at t ≈ −0.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 for the K ∗ (1420). For the K ∗ (890) the crossover is weaker but it occurs at the same value of t . This behaviour can be explained by pomeron, f and ω Regge exchange contributions to the NPE amplitude. The UPE amplitudes agree, both in normalisation and t -dependence, with the expectations of π and B exchange as isolated from data for the charge exchange reaction K − p → (K − π + )n.

High statistics data for the reactions K ± p → K S 0 π ± p at 10 GeV/ c are analysed. The K ∗ (1 − ), K ∗ (2 + ), and K ∗ (3 − ) resonance parameters and production cross sections are calculated. The Kπ production amplitudes are determined as a function of t and the produced Kπ mass. Isoscalar natural-parity-exchange (NPE) is dominant. The t dependence of the K ± NPE amplitudes have a cross-over at t = −0.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 for both K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) production, being more pronounced for the K ∗ (1420). Natural-parity-exchange interference effects are isolated. The NPE amplitudes are decomposed into pomeron-, f-, and ω-exchange contributions. S-wave Kπ production is found to be consistent with the Kπ partial-wave analyses of charge-exchange reactions.

We perform an amplitude analysis of 10 GeV/ c π − p → K − K S 0 p data as a function of K − K 0 mass from threshold up to 2 GeV. We find that the A 2 and g resonances are produced dominantly by natural and unnatural parity exchange, respectively, and we determine their resonance parameters. We present further evidence for the I = 1, 4 + state A 2 ∗ (1900), in particular by isolating interference effects. Resonance production has been studied in the annihilation process p n aarπ + π - π - π 0 induced by antiprotons in the 0.4 to 0.9 GeV/ c momentum range. We observe strong production of ϱ mesons, together with some f 0 (predominantly in the ϱf 0 channel), ω 0 and A 2 mesons and there is a strong ϱϱ signal. We also observe a broad (~300 MeV/ c 2 ) enhancement at ~1100 MeV/c 2 in the π + π - π - invariant-mass distribution, whereas no such enhancement is seen in the π + π - π 0 channel; we have considered various explanations for this enhancement, including an “A 1 ” effect and interference between amplitudes for conventional resonance production.

We find that R decreases with increasing ⋎ t ⋎; however, extrapolation to t =0 gives R (0) = 0.672 ± 0.032 (statistical) ± 0.47 (systematic) for the dominant spin flip cross sections, and R (0) = 0.500 ± 0.035 for the spin non-flip, in excellent agreement with results at higher energy. We present a study of the decay properties of charmed D mesons produced near the peak of the ψ′′(3770) resonance in e+e− annihilation. Branching fractions for nine Cabibbo-favored and three Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes are presented along with upper limits on one additional Cabibbo-favored and four additional Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes. A study of Kππ-decay-mode Dalitz plots reveals a large quasi-two-body pseudoscalar-vector component for the D0 decays and an apparent nonuniform population on the Dalitz plot for the D+ decay into K−π+π+. Using tagged events, we measure the charged-particle multiplicity and strange-particle content of D decays. A measurement of the D+ and D0 semileptonic decay fractions indicates that the D+ has a significantly longer lifetime than the D0.

We present results of a detailed analysis of inclusive direct photon production at the ψ(3095). The direct-photon momentum distribution for x>0.4 is presented and compared with the leading-order quantum-chromodynamic prediction. The total production rate is found to be consistent with theoretical expectations, but the observed momentum distribution is considerably softer. Results of an analysis of some inclusive properties of the hadronic system recoiling against the direct photon are presented. The mean charged-particle and Ks multiplicities are presented as functions of the invariant mass of the hadronic system. These data agree well with the corresponding mean multiplicities measured in e+e− annihilations at center-of-mass energies comparable to the invariant mass of the hadronic system.

The cross section, which is small just above the four-pion threshold, exhibits a large enhancement near the ϱ 0 ϱ 0 threshold.
Axis error includes +- 0.0/0.0 contribution (THE QUOTED ERRORS INCLUDE VARIOUS SYSTEMATIC ERRORS ADDED QUADRATICALLY).
