Data were taken at the energy 2 E = 990 MeV to search for multibody events, with the same large solid angle detector which has been used for the measurement of the ϱ , ω and φ production by e + e − annilations. Assuming a π + π − π 0 π 0 production by the quasi two-body process e + e − → ϱ → ωπ 0 we give the correspondi ng cross section σ (e + e − → π + π − π 0 π 0 ) = (1.1 ± 0.5) 10 −32 cm 2 . Since no events with 3 and 4 charged pions have been observed σ (e + e − → π + π − π 0 π − ) ⩽ 1.5 × 10 −33 cm 2 .

Multihadronic production has been observed at the Adone e + e − storage ring, in the c.m. energy range 1.4 - 2.4 GeV. The cross sections for the reactions e + + e − → 2 π ± + nπ o (1 ⩽ n ⩽ 4) and e + + e − → (4 π ± + nπ ± ) (0 ⩽ n ⩽ 2) have been measured, assuming that the produced particles are only pions with a pure phase space momentum distribution.

Multihadron production by electron-positron colliding beams has been investigated for total centre-of-mass energies ranging from 1.2 to 2.4 GeV. The total cross-section, σtot ≡ σ(e+e−→π+π−+ + anything), is of the order of σμμ ≡ σ(e+e−→μ+μ−), with a threshold near 1 GeV. Partial cross-sections for the various channels are also derived. The cross-section of the specific channel e+e−→π+π−π+π− exhibits an energy dependence which is suggestive of a heavier vector meson, ρ' (mρ,≈ 1.6 GeV,Гρ, ≈ 350 Mev), having the same quantum numbers as the ρ-meson. An upper limit is given for the coupling constantfρ′ (fρ′/4π<18, wherefρ′=mρ′2e/gγρ′). Final states withG+ parity are found to be much more abundant than those withG− parity. The average multiplicity (charged plus neutral final-state pions) is found to be betweet 4 and 5 over all the energy range explored.

We have measured the total cross section for electron-positron annihilation into three or more hadrons, with at least two charged particles in the final state. The measurement was made at a center-of-mass energy of 4 GeV with a 2π−sr nonmagnetic detector. With 88 events detected, we obtain a model-independent lower limit on the hadron production cross section of 9.6 ± 1.4 nb; a calculation of detection efficiency based on invariant phase-space production of pions leads to a total cross section of 26 ± 6 nb. This cross section is 4.7 ± 1.1 times the theoretical total cross section for e+e−→μ+μ−. The average charged multiplicity is n¯=4.2±0.6.

The average multiplicities 〈 n c 〉 and 〈n〉, of charged-plus-neutral pions produced in e + e − collisions, have been determined for total center-of-mass energies ranging from 1.2 to 2.4 GeV. No appreciable multiplicity variation is observed over this energy range, where the mean values 〈; n c 〉 = 3.3 +0.3 −0.2 and 〈 n 〉 = 4.4 +0.4 −0.2 are found.

We have observed a second sharp peak in the cross section for e+e−→hadrons at a center-of-mass energy of 3.695±0.004 GeV. The upper limit of the full width at half-maximum is 2.7 MeV.

A large solid angle detector has been used to observe π + π − π o events produced at the φ energy by electron-positron collisions in the Orsay storage ring. Fitting our data with a Breit and Wigner curve, with a fixed width Γ = (3.8±0.4) MeV coming from K O S K O L analysis, we deduce σ e + e − → π + π − π O = (0.70±0.13) μ bat 2 E = Mφ . Using our measurements on the other φ decay modes we deduce ( φ → π + π − π o )/( φ → K o S K o L ) = 0.47±0.06 and ( φ → η o γ )/( φ → K o S K o L ) = 0.077±0.022. Assuming ( φ → K + K − )/( φ → K o S K o L ) = 1.60, we derive σ TOT = (4.7±0.4) μ b, Γ e + e − = (1.27±0.11 keV and g 2 o /4 π = 14.3±1.3 (without finite width correction). Furthermore (from the observation of the ππγ coplanar events) we put an upper limit to the mode e + e − → φ π + π − γ , Γ ( φ → π + π − γ ) ⩽ 0.007 Γ ( φ → Total ) with 90% C.L.

New results on the multihadron production by electron and positron beams colliding with a total energy of up to 3 GeV are reported. Disregarding possible kaon final states, the ratio σ mh / σ μμ of the total multihadron cross-section to the point-like cross section for process e + e − → μ + μ − has an average value of 1.58 ± 0.25 in the energy interval 2.6–3.0 GeV. The average charged multiplicity over this energy range is 〈 n c 〉 = 2.9 ± 0.3.
AT A MEAN ENERGY OF 2.85 GEV, THE AVERAGE MULTIHADRON CROSS SECTION IS 16.4 +- 2.6 NB (R = 1.58 +- 0.25).
We have measured the cross section σ for electron - positron annihilation into three or more hadrons, with at least two charged particles in the final state, at 5 GeV center-of-mass energy. We find a model-independent lower limit of σ>9.1±1.0nb; assuming invariant phase-space production of pions, we calculate the detection efficiency of our detector to be (45 ± 11)%, yielding a cross section σ=21±5nb. The average charged hadron multiplicity is found to be n¯=4.3±0.6.
