Attenuation measurements of reaction and total cross sections have been made for π− beams at 410, 464, and 492 MeV on targets of CD2, 6Li, C, Al, S, Ca, Cu, Zr, Sn, and Pb. These results are assisted by and compared to predictions from a recent eikonal optical model. Calculations with this model, which does not include pion absorption, agree with recent elastic scattering data, but are significantly below our measured reaction and total cross sections.

Alpha breakup of Li-6 and Li-7 near the Coulomb barrier

Angular distributions of the α-particle production differential cross section from the breakup of 6Li and 7Li projectiles incident on a 208Pb target have been measured at seven projectile energies between 29 and 52 MeV. The α-breakup cross section of 6Li was found to be systematically greater than that of 7Li across the entire energy range. These data have been compared with previously reported results and with the predictions of continuum-discretized coupled channels (CDCC) calculations including resonant and nonresonant projectile breakup. The present data compare well with previous measurements, while the CDCC calculations provide a reasonable prediction of the relative α-breakup cross sections but underpredict their absolute values. The calculations confirm that a major factor in the enhancement of the 6Li to 7Li α-breakup cross section is the difference between the α-breakup thresholds of the two isotopes. These results have implications for structural studies of light exotic nuclei based on elastic scattering.

TOTAL, ELASTIC AND INCLUSIVE SINGLE DIFFRACTIVE CROSS-SECTIONS IN ALPHA-ALPHA COLLISIONS AT THE CERN INTERSECTING STORAGE RINGS

Inspire Record 227125 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.33694

We present measurements of the total interaction cross section and of the single-diffractive dissociation cross section in αα collisions at √ s = 126 GeV. The result obtained for the total cross section, σ tot = (315±18) mb, is a substantial improvement on the precision of earlier measurements. Earlier elastic data were re-analysed, incorporating, through the optical theorem, the present σ tot measurement, resulting in improved determinations of the forward slope, b − t <0.07 = (87±4) GeV −2 , and of the integrated elastic cross section, σ el = (58±6) mb. The single-diffractive differential cross section falls exponentially with momentum transfer at small values of t with a slope b sd = (19.3 ± 0.6) GeV −2 . The integrated single-diffractive cross section is σ sd = (16.6±2.5) mb. The topology of charged tracks resulting from the disintegration of the α in single-diffractive events reveals a two-component distribution. The cross section data are compared with multiple-scattering models.

A Comparative Investigation of Low Mass (pi+ omega) and (K- omega) Systems at Various Energies

The Aachen-Berlin-Bonn-CERN-Heidelberg-London-Vienna collaboration Otter, G. ; Becker, L ; Dornan, P J ; et al.
Nucl.Phys.B 87 (1975) 189-206, 1975.
Inspire Record 91251 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.32066

A comparison is made of the properties and production mechanisms of the π + ω and K − ω systems produced in the reactions π + p → π + ω p at 4, 5, 8 and 16 GeV/ c and K − p → K − ω p at 10 and 16 GeV/ c . In the π + ω case apeak is observed at 1.23 GeV (the B meson), while the K − ω mass distribution has a threshold enhancement. The cross section of the low mass (<2.0 GeV) π + ω system falls as p lab −2 , while that of the low mass (<2.0 GeV) K − ω system is almost constant with energy, indicating diffractive production of the K − ω system, but not of the πω system. Using a modified version of the Illinois partial-wave analysis program, it is found that the K − ω system is dominantly produced in the J P = 1 + state with small contributions of 0 − and 2 + , mainly by natural parity exchange - as is found for reactions such as K − p → (K − π + π − )p which are predominantly diffractive. For the π + ω system in the B mass region, J P = 1 + states, produced mainly by natural parity exchange are found; the contributions of 0 − P, 1 − P, 2 − P and 2 + D are consistent with zero. The 1 + D state occurs in the π + ω case but not in the K − ω system, nor in the K ππ − system produced in the K − p → K ππ p reaction.

Approximately 21 000 four-prong pp interactions at 13.1 GeV/ c have been studied using the CERN 2m hydrogen bubble chamber. The following reactions have been analyzed pp→ppπ + π − (1) pp→ppπ + π − π 0 (2) pp→ppπ + π + π − (3) The Δ-production is the dominant feature. We also observed the pππ decay of the N ∗ (1470) and N ∗ (1690). The ϱis weakly produced in the three reactions. The η and the α are observed in the reaction (2) and the presence of a ω isobar is discussed. Then the kinematical characteristics of the final particles are described.

We present the first results of an experiment at the CERN intersecting storage rings, which measures the total cross-section in proton-proton collisions. The equivalent laboratory momenta are 291, 496, 1068 and 1480 GeV/c. We have made a direct measurement of αT as the ratio between the total interaction rate and the machine luminosity. The present paper gives a detailed description of the experimental apparatus and of the analysis procedure. We find that αT increases by about 10% in the energy region studied.

The TPC/Two-Gamma Collaboration has measured the inclusive cross section for production of charmed D ∗± mesons in photon-photon collisions. The reaction utilized was e + e - →e + e - D ∗± X, with D ∗± →D O π +- , D O →K -+ π ± , and either zero or one outgoing e ± detected. The result, σ(e + e - → e + e - D ∗± X) = 74±26±19 pb , is in agreement with the quark parton mo del prediction for e + e - → e + e - c c , combined with a Lund model for the hadronization of the charmed quarks.

Fission probabilities of Cu, Nb, Ag, Ho, Au and Bi nuclei excited by stopped anti-protons

Inspire Record 406569 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.16498

The A dependence of nuclear fission induced by stopped antiprotons has been measured. An unambiguous identification of the binary fission decay mode was provided by a coordinate measurement of complementary fission fragments in coincidence using a large-acceptance fission detector based on low pressure multiwire proportional chambers. A deep fissility minimum was observed nearA=100, in agreement with the general behaviour predicted by the liquid-drop model. An unexpectedly low and high fission probability was found for the Ag and Cu nuclei, respectively.

Measurement of the total cross-section difference Delta(sigma-L) in n p transmission at 1.19-GeV, 2.49-GeV and 3.65-GeV

Results of the total cross section differenceΔσL in anp transmission experiment at 1.19, 2.49 and 3.65 GeV incident neutron beam kinetic energies are presented. Measurements were performed at the Synchrophasotron of the Laboratory of High Energies of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. Results were obtained with a polarized beam of free quasi-monochromatic neutrons passing through the new Dubna frozen spin proton target. The beam and target polarizations were oriented longitudinally. The present results were obtained at the highest energies of free polarized neutrons that can be reached at present. They extend the energy range of existing results from PSI, LAMPF and Saclay measured between 0.066 and 1.10 GeV. The new results are compared withΔσL(pn) data determined as a difference betweenΔσL(pd) andΔσL(pp) ANL-ZGS measurements. The values ofΔσL for the isospin stateI=0 were deduced using knownpp data.
