We present results from an experiment studying the production of single particles and jets (groups of particles) with high p ⊥ (transverse momentum) in 200 GeV/ c interactions on a beryllium target. We give a detailed discussion of the ambiguities in the jet definition. The jet and single-particle cross sections have a similar shape but the jet cross section is over two orders of magnitude larger. The events show evidence for the coplanar structure suggested by constituent models, and the momentum distributions of charged particles give strong support to a simple quark-quark scattering model.

Measurement of coherent elastic and inelastic deuteron - proton scattering at s = 2800-GeV**2

Nucl.Phys.B 132 (1978) 365, 1978.
Inspire Record 121793 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.35161

Data on coherent elastic and inelastic deuteron-proton scattering are presented. The measurements were made at the CERN ISR with a single arm spectrometer, at s = 2800 GeV 2 and momentum transfer squared (− t ) in the range 0.15 to 0.42 GeV 2 . The data are compared with elastic and inelastic diffractive proton-proton scattering data taken with the same apparatus at the same s and t values. The t dependence of the elastic dp → dp differential cross section is compared to simple predictions based on Glauber theory. The differential cross sections for pp → pX and dp → dX are also compared for M X 2 → 280 GeV 2 , where M X denotes the mass of system X recoiling against the measured proton and deuteron.

Study of D Mesons Produced in the Decay of the psi-prime-prime (3772)

Phys.Rev.Lett. 39 (1977) 1301, 1977.
Inspire Record 120878 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.21003

From a study of D mesons produced in the decay ψ(3772)→DD¯, we have determined the masses of the D0 and D+ mesons to be 1863.3±0.9 MeV/c2 and 1868.3±0.9 MeV/c2, respectively. Under the assumption that the ψ(3772) has a definite isospin and decays only to DD¯, the D0 branching fractions to K−π+, K¯0π+π−, and K−π+π−π+ are (2.2±0.6)%, (4.0 ± 1.3)%, and (3.2±1.1)% and the D+ branching fractions to K¯0π+ and K−π+π+ are (1.5±0.6)% and (3.9±1.0)%.

Coherent Dissociation of Neutrons on Nuclei at 100 GeV/c to 300 GeV/c

We have studied the coherent dissociation of neutrons into pπ− systems, for a variety of nuclear targets, at incident momenta up to 300 GeV/c. Using a model incorporating both electromagnetic and hadronic production, we have extracted total cross sections for scattering of unstable pπ− systems on nucleons.

Amplitude and Natural Parity Exchange Analysis of K+- p --> (K pi)+- p Data at 10-GeV/c

Nucl.Phys.B 134 (1978) 392-412, 1978.
Inspire Record 122126 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.35128

High statistics data for the reactions K ± p → K S 0 π ± p at 10 GeV/ c are analysed. The K ∗ (1 − ), K ∗ (2 + ), and K ∗ (3 − ) resonance parameters and production cross sections are calculated. The Kπ production amplitudes are determined as a function of t and the produced Kπ mass. Isoscalar natural-parity-exchange (NPE) is dominant. The t dependence of the K ± NPE amplitudes have a cross-over at t = −0.3 (GeV/ c ) 2 for both K ∗ (890) and K ∗ (1420) production, being more pronounced for the K ∗ (1420). Natural-parity-exchange interference effects are isolated. The NPE amplitudes are decomposed into pomeron-, f-, and ω-exchange contributions. S-wave Kπ production is found to be consistent with the Kπ partial-wave analyses of charge-exchange reactions.

Phi Meson Production in 3.75-GeV/c pi+ p Interactions

Phys.Rev.D 17 (1978) 1256, 1978.
Inspire Record 5868 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.31764

The production of φ mesions is studied in the reaction π+p→π+p K+K− and π+→π+p K0K¯0 at 3.75 GeV/c. A large isotropic component is seen in the production angular distribution for the reaction π+p→π+pφ. The cross sections for the φπ+p and φΔ++ final states are compared with the cross sections for ωπ+p and ωΔ++ at the same momentum.

Charged Hadron Multiplicities and Inclusive pi- Distributions in Inelastic e p Scattering

Nucl.Phys.B 133 (1978) 13-37, 1978.
Inspire Record 121936 DOI 10.17182/hepdata.35153

Electroproduction of hadrons is studied in the kinematic region W < 2.8 GeV and 0.3 < Q 2 < 1.4 GeV 2 using the DESY streamer chamber. Prong cross sections, charged-particle multiplicities and inclusive π − distributions are presented. The average charged multiplicity is found to be independent of Q 2 in the Q 2 range studied here; however it is lower than in photoproduction. The fraction of forward π − is found to be significantly less in electroproduction than in photoproduction. The 〈 p ⊥ 2 〉 for inclusive π − is, for all x values, similar to that found in photoproduction.

Inclusive Production of $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$, $\bar{p}$ in High-Energy pp Collisions

Phys.Rev.Lett. 39 (1977) 1173-1176, 1977.

We have measured the single-particle inclusive cross sections for p+p→π±+X, K±+X, p+X, p¯+X in the low-p⊥ region (≲ 1.5 GeV/c) as a function of the radial scaling variable XR in p−p collisions at 100, 200, and 400 GeV at Fermilab. The measured π+π− and K+K− ratios are shown to be remarkably similar to the same ratios which have recently been measured at large p⊥ at 90° in the center-of-mass system.
