We have observed inclusive production of D0 and D+ mesons, and their charge conjugates, in e+e− annihilation at 29 GeV on the basis of a data sample of 106 pb−1. These signals correspond to R values of R(D0+D―0)=1.8±0.5 and R(D++D−)=1.2±0.4. Taking the D+ and D0 data together, we measure a charge asymmetry of A=−0.08±0.12 for charmed quarks. A comparison of R(D+D―) with R(D*+D―*) obtained via the process D*+→D0π+ gives a DD* ratio of 1.0−0.2+0.3, indicating that direct D* production dominates over direct D production.

The electroweak production asymmetry and the decay fragmentation function for e + e − → c c have been measured at s = 29 GeV using charged D ∗ production over the full kinematic range. The data were taken at PEP using the High Resolution Spectrometer. The measured asymmetry is −0.12 ± 0.08. The total production cross section in units of the point cross section corrected for initial state radiation is R D ∗ = 2.7 ± 0.9 .
ASSUMES SIG(D*+) = SIG(D*0). (EXPT. MEASURES D*+ PRODUCTION ONLY). R VALUE CORRECTED FOR INITIAL STATE RADIATION.

A new measurement of αs is obtained from the distributions in thrust, heavy jet mass, energy-energy correlation and two recently introduced jet broadening variables following a method proposed by Cata
Thrust distribution corrected for detector acceptance and initial state photon radiation.
Heavy jet mass (RHO) distribution (THRUST definition) corrected for detect or acceptance and initial state photon radiation.
Heavy jet mass (RHOM) distribution (MASS definition) corrected for detectoracceptance and initial state photon radiation.
Data from the high-resolution spectrometer at PEP have been used to study the inclusive production of φ mesons and F± mesons decaying into φπ±. Fragmentation functions and cross sections are presented and compared to existing data. The total φ cross section at 29 GeV is 40±6 pb. The observed F signal in the region z>0.4, given the assumption that R(F)[R(F)+R(D)]=0.15, corresponds to an F→φπ branching ratio of (3.3±1.1)%. The measured F mass is 1963±3±3 MeV/c2.

A search for single photons, produced in e + e − collisions together with particles interacting only weakly with matter, has been performed using the CELLO detector at the PETRA storage ring. We report on results from data taken at 35 GeV < √ s <46.57 GeV. An upper limit of 8.7 (90% CL) on the number of light neutrino species is set. Combining our result with published results from other e + e − experiments the number of light neutrinos is limited to N v < 4.6 at 90% CL. We also set lower limits on the masses of supersymmetric particles.
TWO RUN AT DIFFERENT ENERGIES COMBINED, 1.26 EVENTS WAS FOUND.
The reaction e + e − → τ + τ − has been studied at centre of mass energies between 14.0 and 46.8 GeV with the CELLO detector at the PETRA e + e − collider. We present results for the cross section σ τ and the charge asymmetry A τ . The results are in good agreement with the standard model. We have also measured the topological decay rates BR 1 , BR 3 and BR 5 for the inclusive decay of the τ lepton into one, three and five charge particles. The results confirm and improve earlier CELLO measurements at other energies. We find for the combined values at all energies BR 1 = (84.9 ± 0.4 ± 0.3)%, BR 3 = (15.0 ± 0.4 ± 0.3)% and BR 5 = (0.16 ± 0.13 ± 0.04)%.

Results on the reaction γγ → π + π − π 0 π 0 are presented. There is clear evidence for correlated ϱ + ϱ − production. The cross section is much lower than for γγ → ϱ 0 ϱ 0 .

First measurements of the mass and width of the Z 0 performed at the newly commissioned LEP Collider by the DELPHI Collaboration are presented. The measuements are derived from the study of multihadronic final states produced in e + e − annihilations at several energies around the Z 0 mass. The values found for the mass and width are M (Z 0 )=91.06±0.09 (stat) ±0.045 (syst.) GeV and Γ (Z 0 )=2.42±0.21 (stat.) GeV respectively, froma three-parameter fit to the line shape. A two-parameter fit in the framework of the standard model yields for the number of light neutrino species N ν =2.4±0.4 (stat.) ±0.5 (syst.).

A measurement of the cross section for e + e - → hadrons using 11 000 hadronic decays of the Z boson at ten different center-of-mass energies is presented. A three-parameter fit gives the following values for the Z mass M z , the total width Γ z , the product of the electronic and hadronic partial widths Γ e Γ h , and the unfolded pole cross section σ 0 : M Z =91.171±0.030(stat)±0.030 (beam) GeV, Γ Z =2.511±0.065 GeV, Γ e Γ h =0.148±0.006 (stat.)±0.004 (syst.) We have studied the reactions e + e − → e + e − , e + e − → γγ , e + e − → μ + μ − , and e + e − → τ + τ − in the centre-of-mass (CM) energy range from 39.8 to 45.2 GeV using the CELLO detector at PETRA. Upper limits on the partial widths for new spin 0 bosons with masses both within and above the energy range covered are determined. No evidence for contributions of such new particles has been observed up to the highest PETRA energies in a model independent way. Under the assumptions of recently suggested models relating the existence of spin 0 bosons to the radiative width Γ τ of the Z 0 we exclude such bosons at the 95% confidence level for masses below the Z 0 -mass if Γ τ > 20 MeV.
