The differential cross-section for π+ photoproduction from hydrogen by γ-rays of laboratory energy 187 MeV has been measured at four angles. Two identical counter systems, designed to detect low energy pions unambiguosly in intense electron and γ-ray backgrounds, were used in conjunction with a cylindrical liquid hydrogen target, of very low boil-off rate. The cross-sections at laboratory angles of 39.2°, 66.7°, 111.6°, and 134° are 7.49±0.47, 8.10±0.57, 8.36±0.61 and 9.54±0.61, ·10−30cm2/sr, respectively, where the assigned errors refer only to the relative values. The absolute cross-sections are in substantial agreement with the dispersion theory and confirm the front to back asymmetry.

Substantial production of the resonances ϱ, f and ω has been observed in this reaction. In contrast with the channel p p → 2π + 2π − , associated production of resonances was found to occur. The behaviour of the associated production of ω-mesons with other resonances is shown to be consistent with some very simple assumptions. Alternative methods of displaying data for p p → ππω are discussed; it is shown that the longitudinal phase plot for this reaction is unlike that obtained for any previously reported reaction. Reasonable agreement for the behaviour of this channel is found with the multiperipheral model of Chan, Łoskiewicz and Allison.

A study is made of η 0 production in p p → 3π + 3π − π 0 (7500 events) at an incident momentum of 720 MeV/ c . The reaction is dominated by production of ω 0 (≈68 o/o). The η o production has been studied by means of two independent methods: the first, a study of correlations between the (4 π ) ± and (5 π ) 0 and the (3 π ) 0 systems, circumvents the problem of ω 0 reflections. The second attempts to isolate the η 0 4π channel by means of rigorous selections using the decay properties of η 0 and ω 0 . The results of the two methods are consistent and confirnm the production of σ +- , D 0 and E 0 with the decays ifD 0 → σ ± π ± → η 0 π + π ( su −), E 0 → σ ± π ∓ → η ( su 0) π + π − , E 0 → η 0 π + π − .

The differential cross sections for the reaction γ + n → π 0 + n have been measured at pions angles of 45°, 60°, 105°, 120° and 140° in the c.m.s. for photon energies of 500–900 MeV. Both π 0 meson and recoil neutron from a liquid deuterium target were detected with a pair of Čerenkov counters combined with lead spark chambers and a hodoscope consisting of 16 modules of plastic scintillation counters.

Total cross sections of p¯p and p¯d have been measured between 360 and 1050 MeV/c, with high statistical precision. Structures are observed in both cross sections at about the same momenta. For p¯p, the central mass is 1932±2 MeV/c2, and a fit to the data with a simple Breit-Wigner resonance plus background gives Γ=9−3+4 MeV/c2. The data suggest that the structures are in the isospin-1 state.

At the Bonn 2.5 GeV synchrotron the differential photoproduction cross section d σ /d t of φ mesons has been measured at a photon energy of 2.0 GeV at fibe different t values between 0.23 < | t | < 0.73 (GeV/ c ) 2 . The φ meson was detected by magnetic momentum analysis of both charged decay K mesons and by a time of flight and angle measurement of the coincident recoil proton. We found an exponential behaviour for the t dependence of the cross section. The measured slope of the exponential decrease was b = (4.01 ± 0.23) (GeV/ c −2 . This result, combined with previous measurements at higher energies, implies that the slope of the pomeron trajectory is compatible with zero. In addition the experiment yielded a value of the φ mass, m φ = (1019.4 ± 0.8) MeV and a value of the φ width, Γ = (4.4 ± 0.4) MeV.

The dσ/dt′ distribution for the two reactions displays the same exp[−At′] shape withA⋍37 (GeV/c)−2 in both cases, thus indicating that the differential cross-sections are dominated by the deuteron form factor. The coherent inclastic interaction contains the channel π+d → θ0π+d with a cross-sectionσ==(20±5) µb and a signal for the B+-meson of about 12 µb. The four-pion masses display structures below 2 GeV/c.

We report preliminary results on the production of electron-positron pairs in the mass range 2.5 to 4 GeV in 400-GeV p-Be interactions. Production cross sections of the ψ(3100) near x=0 as a function of pt, x, and the decay angle are presented and implications of these new data for single direct leptons are discussed. A ψ′(3700) signal is observed at a level corresponding to σ(ψ′)σ(ψ)=(10±3)%.

We have studied ω photoproduction using 7.5- to 10.5-GeV tagged photons. Cross sections from hydrogen lie 22% below the bubble chamber results of Ballam et al., but have a similar slope. Density matrices indicate approximate s-channel helicity conservation. The proton-neutron cross-section difference is midway between zero and the value suggested by the γp−γn total-cross-section difference. Fits to the cross sections for D, Be, and Cu and those for Be, C, Al, Cu, and Pb from a previous experiment yield σωN=25.4±2.7 mb and γω24π=7.6±1.2.

The total cross section for hadron production by high-energy photons has been measured from a number of nuclei ranging from hydrogen to uranium. Some shadowing is observed at a level considerably less than predicted by conventional vector-meson dominance but consistent with a modified theory. The energy dependence predicted by vectormeson dominance is observed. The shadowing in heavy nuclei shows a smooth transition from electroproduction to photoproduction.

We report results from a measurement of the inclusive processes pp→Xp and pd→Xd in the range 5<Mx2s<0.1, 0.01≲|t|≲0.1 (GeV/c)2, and incident proton momenta of 65, 154, and 372 GeV/c. Both pp and pd data show an exponential t dependence and a dominant 1Mx2 behavior for Mx2s≲0.05. By comparing pp and pd data we test factorization and, using the Glauber model, we measure the XN total cross section, σXN=43±10 mb.

The production of the ϒ family in proton-nucleus collisions is clarified by a sixfold increase in statistics. Inclusive energy spectra of protons, deuterons, and tritons were measured with a telescope of silicon and germanium detectors with a detection range for proton energies up to 200 MeV. Fifteen sets of data were taken using projectiles ranging from protons to Ar40 on targets from Al27 to U238 at bombarding energies from 240 MeV/nucleon to 2.1 GeV/nucleon. Particular attention was paid to the absolute normalization of the cross sections. For three previously reported reactions, He fragment cross sections have been corrected and are presented. To facilitate a comparison with theory the sum of nucleonic charges emitted as protons plus composite particles was estimated and is presented as a function of fragment energy per nucleon in the interval from 15 to 200 MeV/nucleon. For low-energy fragments at forward angles the protons account for only 25% of the nucleonic charges. The equal mass Ar40 plus Ca systems were examined in the center of mass. Here at 0.4 GeV/nucleon Ar40 plus Ca the proton spectra appear to be nearly isotropic in the center of mass over the region measured. Comparisons of some data with firestreak, cascade, and fluid dynamics models indicate a failure of the first and a fair agreement with the latter two. In addition, associated fast charged particle multiplicities (where the particles had energies larger than 25 MeV/nucleon) and azimuthal correlations were measured with an 80 counter array of plastic scintillators. It was found that the associated multiplicities were a smooth function of the total kinetic energy of the projectile. We have measured the differential cross-section and the analyzing power (polarization) for p-He4 elastic scattering at incident kinetic energies of 0.56, 0.80, 1.03, 1.24, and 1.73 GeV. The experiment used a polarized proton beam incident on a liquid helium target and a single arm magnetic spectrometer to detect elastic scattering. Both the differential cross sections and the analyzing power show structure near −t=0.25 (GeV/c)2 which decreases in magnitude with increasing energy. We present a study of the inclusive production ofK*(892) and ∑t+-(1385)+cc at 3.6 GeV/c from\(\bar p\)p interactions. The sensitivity of the exposure is 35.4 events/μb. Longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions are presented. The indirect production ofKs0 from parentK* and that of Λ's from parent Σ(1385) are studied. The shape of thex distribution of Λ's for\(p\xrightarrow{{\bar p}}\Lambda \) are calculated from\(p\xrightarrow{p}\Lambda \) and\(p\xrightarrow{{\pi ^ -}}\Lambda \) and compared with the experimental distributions. We have measured the differential cross section d2σdΩdTπ and the polarization parameter P for the production of π+ and π− in various target nuclei (H1, H2, Be, C, O, Al, Ni, Cu, Mo, and Pb) by protons with a kinetic energy of 585 MeV, for production angles θπ=22.5°, 45°, 60°, 90°, and 135°, and for pion kinetic energies Tπ of 24, 35, 46, 88, 151, 192, and 254 MeV (all quantities in the laboratory system). Our data disagree strongly with recent data for 580-MeV protons. On the other hand, for pion energies up to 150 MeV, our cross sections differ little from those measured for a proton energy of 730 MeV. For nuclei with A>20, the total production cross sections σ(π+) and σ(π−) show the Z13 and N23 proportionality expected from theoretical arguments. There is evidence in our data of a shift of the π+ energy distributions compared to the π− distributions due to the effects of the Coulomb field of the nuclear protons on the emitted pions. Virtual photoproduction of J/ ψ mesons has been measured for 280 GeV muon iron interactions in an iron/scintillator calorimeter target. The J/ψ's were identified by their decay into muon pairs. 315 events were observed, about half of which were elastic. The t , Q 2 and v distributions of these elastic events are presented. The v dependence is measured between 40 and 180 Mev and compared with lower energy photoproduction results. The Q 2 dependence is compared with the predictions of the vector dominance model.

For the first time we find indications of a second contribution to the peripheral rising of the proton-proton cross section in a region around 2.2 fm.

d2σdΩdT for π+ mesons produced in π−p→π−π+n was measured at seven incident energies between 203 and 357 MeV and the integrated reaction cross section was calculated. The matrix element, when extrapolated to threshold and compared with soft-pion calculations, determined the chiral-symmetry-breaking parameter ξ=0.05±0.26, which is consistent with the Weinberg Lagrangian. The large hard-pion contributions at 203 MeV demonstrated the absolute necessity for comparing at threshold.

An experimental analysis of p p interactions between the p p threshold (√ s = 1878 MeV) and √ s = 2 100 MeV leads to clear evidence for an s -channel effect in the reaction p p → π + π − π + π − π 0 at 1949 ± 10 MeV /c 2 (Γ ⋍ 80 MeV /c 2 ) . A comparison is made with the backward elastic scattering and charge-exchange behaviour. An interpretation in terms of an object strongly coupled to mesonic decay modes, with small or middle-sized elasticity ( x ⩽ 0.135 −0.06 +0.13 ) is given. No significant narrow structure is observed in the backward elastic scattering between 1.9 and 2 GeV. The experimental resolution of √ s in this case is 2 MeV.

POSSIBLE EVIDENCE FOR OMEGA(1670) RESONANCE.
The properties of the effect observed in the reaction p p → π + π − π + π − π 0 at 1949 ± 10 MeV /c 2 (τ ≅ 80 MeV /c 2 ) are studied. The ω 0 ϱ 0 , A 2 0 π + π − and π + π − π + π − π 0 (non-resonant) channels are found to be coupled with this object. The assignment I G = 1 − is established and an analysis of the √ s behaviour of the density matrix elements for the final state ω 0 ϱ 0 clearly favour J P = 2 + , 4 + … Comparisons are made with present theoretical schemes describing this mass region.
