A factorial moment analysis has been performed on the differential multiplicity distributions of hadronic final states of the Z 0 recorded with the OPAL detector at LEP. The moments of the one-dimensional rapidity and the two-dimensional rapidity versus azimuthal angle distributions are found to exhibit “intermittent” behaviour attributable to the jet structure of the events. The moments are reproduced by both parton shower and matrix element QCD based hadronisation models. No evidence for fluctuations beyond those attributable to jet structure is observed.
Corrected factorial moments of the rapidity distribution with respect to the sphericity axis. The errors shown are statistical only but include the statistical error onthe correction factor, added in quadrature.
Corrected factorial moments of the rapidity distribution with respect to the electron beam axis. The errors shown are statistical only but include the statistical error onthe correction factor, added in quadrature.
Corrected factorial moments of the rapidity (with respect to the sphericityaxis) versus PHI distribution. For each point the NUMBER of bins are constructe d from equal numbers of YRAP and PHI bins. The errors shown are statistical only but include the statistical error onthe correction factor, added in quadrature.
The inclusive jet cross section has been measured in the UA1 experiment at the CERN p p Collider at centre-of-mass energies √ s = 546 GeV and √ s = 630 eV. The cross sections are found to be consistent with QCD predictions, The observed change in the cross section with the centre-of-mass energy √ s is accounted for in terms of x T scaling.

Results are presented on two-jet and three-jet cross sections, measured in the UA1 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) pp̄ Collider, at the highest available subprocess cms energies ( s ̂ >150 GeV ). Precise measurements of the two-jet angular distribution are consistent with previous results but show significant scale-breaking effects. The three-jet Dalitz plot and the three-jet angular distributions show evidence for final- and initial-state bremsstrahlung processes, in agreement with the leading-order QCD predictions. A comparison of the yield of wide-angle three-jet events with the yield of two-jet events at smaller scattering angles gives for the strong interaction coupling constant: α s ( K 3J K 2J )=0.16±0.02±0.03 at Q 2 ≈4000 GeV 2 , where the factor K 3J K 2J may plausibly be assumed to be close to unity.

A charge hyperon beam has been brought into operation at the CERN SPS. Particles are identified by a DISC Čerenkov counter, and decay products are analysed by a magnetic spectrometer. Cross sections for the inclusive production of π + , K + , p , Σ + , Σ − , ζ − , d, and π − , K − , p , Σ + , Σ − , ζ − , ω − , d in the forward direction have been measured at laboratory momenta between 70 and 130 GeV/ c . This range of momenta corresponds to 0.35 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.66 for an incident proton momentum of 200 GeV/ c . Antihyperon ( Σ − , ζ − , Σ + ) and Σ + and ω − fluxes have been measured for the first time in a hyperon beam.

Measurements of the production inp-BeO collisions of charged baryons and antibaryons with strangeness between −3 and +3 at\(\sqrt s= 21.2GeV\)x=0.48, andpT=600MeV/c are reported. The experimental results can be interpreted within the framework of a simple proton fragmentation-recombination model.

The production of electrons with very high transverse momentum has been studied in the UA2 experiment at the CERN\(\bar pp\) collider (\(\sqrt s\)=540 GeV). From a sample of events containing an electron candidate withpT>15 GeV/c, we extract a clear signal resulting from the production of the charged intermediate vector bosonW±, which subsequently decays into an electron and a neutrino. We study theW production and decay properties. Further-more, we refine our results on the production and decay of the neutral vector bosonZ0. Finally, we compare the experimental results to the predictions of the standard model of the unified electro-weak theory.

Results on the protron structure function, F2, are presented for 0.3<q2<80.0 GeV2 and 10<ν<200 GeV. The results support the conclusions of earlier work at 97 and 147 GeV that scaling is violated. A new value for R=σSσT=0.44±0.25 has been obtained using all the Fermilab proton measurements.

We have measured the polarization of Λ's in inclusive pp and K−p reactions and of Λ¯'s in p¯p interactions at a beam momentum of 176 GeV/c. Data were taken in the beam-fragmentation region with hyperon transverse momenta from 0.2 to 1.5 GeV/c. The P¯ produced Λ¯'s have the same magnitude and sign of polarization as the p-produced Λ's, whereas the Λ's from K−p interactions are more highly polarized and in the opposite direction.

We have measured the invariant cross section for inclusive ϕ production in proton-nucleus collisions at 400 GeV/c near Feynman x=0. For transverse momenta in the range between 0.8 and 3.5 GeV/c the ratio of ϕ to π− rises from 1 to 7%. We also report on correlations with particles opposite the ϕ in the center-of-mass system as they relate to the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule.
