We report on χc1 and χc2 production in the Feynman-x range 0.1<xF<0.8 in 515GeV/c π−Be collisions. The χc states are observed via their radiative decays into J/ψ's. The resulting photons are detected either as showers in the electromagnetic calorimeter or after conversion in the target as e+e− pairs in the tracking system. The fraction of J/ψ production due to χc1 and χc2 decays is 0.443±0.041±0.035. The ratio of the χc1 to χc2 cross section is 0.57±0.18±0.06. Our results on J/ψ, ψ(2S), and χc production indicate that 0.454±0.044±0.042 of J/ψ's are produced directly.

Isolated photon production is measured in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energies of 2.76 TeV in the pseudorapidity range |eta|<1.44 and transverse energies ET between 20 and 80 GeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measured ET spectra are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions. The ratio of PbPb to pp isolated photon ET-differential yields, scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions, is consistent with unity for all PbPb reaction centralities.

The transverse momentum spectra of charged particles have been measured in pp and PbPb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC. In the transverse momentum range pt = 5-10 GeV/c, the charged particle yield in the most central PbPb collisions is suppressed by up to a factor of 5 compared to the pp yield scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions. At higher pt, this suppression is significantly reduced, approaching roughly a factor of 2 for particles with pt in the range pt=40-100 GeV/c.

A detailed study ofJ/ψ hadronic production has been performed in a high statistics experiment (more than 1.5 106J/ψ observed in their dimuon decay mode). Data have been taken with incident π±,K±,p±, on hydrogen and platinum targets, at 150, 200 and 280 GeV/c. We find from the observed nuclear dependance of the cross sections, that about 18% of theJ/ψ are produced diffractively. Using known structure functions of the quarks in the nucleon and in the pion, we derive estimations for the gluon structure functions.

Antinucleon-nucleus annihilations into two-body final states containing only one or no meson are unusual annihilations (Pontecorvo reactions), practically unexplored experimentally, with the exception of the channel p d → π − p , for which only two low-statistics measurements exist. Their physical interest lies in the possibility of exploring small-distance nuclear dynamics, in which an important role can be played by non-nucleonic degrees of freedom. A new measurement of the p d → π − p reaction rate at rest, performed with the OBELIX spectrometer at LEAR, with the best statistics up to now and a careful evaluation of systematic effects is reported, together with a critical analysis of the existing theoretical models. The measured branching ratio, which confirms the previous results, can represent a reference point for the studies in the field.

The emission of protons from targets of Li6, Li, C12, Al27, Ca40, V51, Zr90, and Pb under bombardment from 800 MeV protons has been studied using a high resolution proton spectrometer. Spectra were measured at laboratory scattering angles of 5°, 7°, 9°, 11°, 13°, 15°, 20°, 25°, and 30° with special emphasis on the quasifree region. Outgoing momenta corresponding to the region of pion production were examined at 11° and 15°. Absolute cross sections have been derived by reference to known (p,p) scattering data at 800 MeV. The quasifree scattering has been compared to a distorted-wave impulse approximation analysis by summing over the unobserved (struck) nucleon. The systematics of proton production and the applicability of the distorted-wave impulse approximation analyses are discussed. We have measured the differential cross section of the reaction π − p→ π − p in the range 0.92 ⩽ cos θ c.m. ⩽ 0.99 at 15 momenta between 0.875 and 1.580 GeV/ c . The results we report complete the available data; previous measurements of this reaction do not extend beyond cos θ c.m. =0.90. We compare our experimental results with dispersion relation predictions. A comparison of our results for B , the slope of the differential cross section, with earlier results shows many discrepancies.
