An experiment was done using the new accelerated polarized proton beam at the Argonne National Laboratory zero-gradient synchrotron and a polarized proton target. The total cross section for proton-proton scattering at 3.5 GeV/c was measured in the spin states ↑↑ and ↑↓ perpendicular to the beam direction. The two cross sections were found to be equal within the experimental error of ±5%.

An experiment was done in the external proton beam of the Berkeley 184-in. cyclotron to measure the production cross sections for pions from various target nuclei, from hydrogen to lead. The cross-section data are presented and the reaction mechanisms discussed. The hydrogen production appears to fit the one-pion-exchange model.

The scattering of photons by protons has been measured with a spark-chamber technique using 335-MeV bremsstrahlung. The experimental values obtained at 90° and 135° are compared with those calculated by Contogouris using dispersion relations. The agreement is reasonable except for a persistently low point for 310 MeV at 90°.
