Measurement of the $e^+e^- \to K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-$ cross section with the CMD-3 detector at the VEPP-2000 collider

The process $e^+e^- \to K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-$ has been studied in the center-of-mass energy range from 1500 to 2000\,MeV using a data sample of 23 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the CMD-3 detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider. Using about 24000 selected events, the $e^+e^- \to K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-$ cross section has been measured with a systematic uncertainty decreasing from 11.7\% at 1500-1600\,MeV to 6.1\% above 1800\,MeV. A preliminary study of $K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-$ production dynamics has been performed.

The total and topological 4Hep cross sections as well as the cross sections of the separate 4Hep interaction channels and the differential cross sections of the elastic 4Hep scattering were measured using the 2m hydrogen bubble chamber exposed to a separated beam of alpha-particles from the ITEP synchrotron at 5 GeV/c (the kinetic energy of the initial protons in the nuclear rest frame was 620 MeV). The data obtained have been compared with the results of the previous experiments and with the theoretical predictions based on the Glauber-Sitenko multiple-scattering theory.

Multifragmentation of Agnat and Au197 nuclei induced by 1.8–4.8 GeV He3 ions has been studied with the Indiana Silicon Sphere 4π detector array. Rapidity, moving source, and sphericity-coplanarity analyses are consistent with near-simultaneous emission from a source in approximate kinetic equilibrium. For the most dissipative collisions, the spectral peaks are broadened and shifted to very low energies, indicative of emission from an extended nuclear system with ρ/ρ0∼1/3. Predictions of an intranuclear cascade/expanding, emitting source model compare well with experimental multiplicity distributions and the evolution of fragment spectral shapes. © 1996 The American Physical Society.

New upper limits for H particle production in anti-p Xe annihilation at low-energy

A study of the reactions p Xe → K + K + X , p Xe → K + H(H → Σ − p)X and p Xe → K + K + H(H → Σ − p)X was performed using the 700-litre xenon bubble chamber DIANA, exposed to the 1 GeV/ c antiproton beam of ITEP (Moscow). From a sample of 7.8 · 10 5 antiproton annihilations at low energy in xenon nuclei 4 events were observed for the reaction p Xe | → K + K + X at rest ( P p ≤ 400 MeV /c ) and 8 for the same reaction in flight ( 400 ≤ P p ≤ 900 MeV /c ). The corresponding probabilities turned out to be 3.1 · 10 −5 and 3.4 · 10 −5 , respectively. No H -event was found in the two semi-inclusive reactions p Xe → K + HX and p Xe → K + K + HX . This lead to the upper limits 6 · 10 −6 and 8 · 10 −6 (90% C.L.), respectively. The corresponding upper limit for the fully inclusive reaction p Xe → HX turned out to be 1.2 · 10 −5 (90% C.L.), which is about one order of magnitude lower than the actual value reported in the literature.

Observation of subthreshold double strangeness production in anti-p annihilations on Xe nuclei: Search for stable H dibaryon

The double strangeness production has been observed in two final states of annihilation of antiprotons at momentum less than 0.9 GeV/ c on Xe nuclei: K + K + X (8 events) and K + K 0 ΛX (6 events). The probabilities of the reaction p Xe → K + K + X vary from 2 · 10 −5 (at rest) up to 7 · 10 −5 (in flight). The reaction p Xe → K + K 0 ΛX is observed only in flight with probability 3 · 10 −4 . The properties of the observed reactions are similar to those resulting from the cascade process with production of Ξ hyperon: p N → K ∗ −K ∗ , K ∗ → Kπ, −K ∗ N → ΞK, ΞN → ΛΛ . The new upper limit on the production probability of the stable H ( S = −2) dibaryon in the reaction Xe → K + K + H(H → Σ − p)X was obtained to be < 2 · 10 − (90% C . L .).

Cross-sections of He-4 interaction with protons and He-4 p elastic scattering at 2.7-GeV/c

The 2m hydrogen bubble chamber was exposed to a separated beam of α-particles from the ITEP synchrotron. The momentum of the 4 He-nuclei beam averaged over the bubble-chamber fiducial volume was equal to 2.7 GeV/ c (the kinetic energy of the initial protons in the nuclear rest frame was T p = 220 MeV). The total and topological cross sections were measured as well as the cross section of separate 4 He-p interaction channels and the differential cross sections d σ d t of the elastic 4 He-p scattering. Multiplicities of secondaries in interactions of 1.8-GeV/nucleon Fe-56 nuclei with photoemulsion and the cascade evaporation model

A nuclear photographic emulsion method was used to study the charge-state, ionization, and angular characteristics of secondaries produced in inelastic interactions of 56 Fe nuclei at 1.8 GeV/nucleon with H, CNO, and AgBr nuclei. The data obtained are compared with the results of calculations made in terms of the Dubna version of the cascade evaporation model (DCM). The DCM has been shown to satisfactorily describe most of the interaction characteristics for two nuclei in the studied reactions. At the same time, quantitative differences are observed in some cases.

The Quasielastic charge exchange reaction p He-3 ---> n(F) p p p at intermediate-energies

The basic characteristics of the quasi-elastic charge exchange reaction p 3 He→ n F ppp are investigated using the 80 cm ITEP liquid-hydrogen bubble chamber, which is exposed to beams of 3 He nuclei with momenta of 2.5 and 5 GeV/ c (the kinetic energy of primary protons in the rest system of the nucleus are, respectively, T p = 0.318 and 0.978 GeV). The experimental data are compared with the predictions of the Glauber-Sitenko multiple scattering theory and of the pole model, taking into account the interaction between spectator nucleons in the final state. In the mass spectrum of the 3p system at 3.05 GeV a clearly denned structure has been revealed, which is not described within the pole model. A possible resonance origin of the given structure is discussed.

THE H-3 + P ---> P + N + D REACTION AT A TRITIUM MOMENTUM OF 5-GEV/C

Using a liquid hydrogen bubble chamber of the ITEP, 80 cm in diameter, a study was made of the 3 H + p → p + n + d reaction with an incident momentum of 5 GeV/c for the tritium nuclei. The reaction cross section was 20.4 ± 0.2 mb. The angular, momentum and mass distributions of the reaction products in the 4π geometry have been obtained. We have separated the phase-space regions corresponding to quasi-free pn scattering and to the final-state Nd interaction. In the region of quasi-free pn scattering various experimental spectra are compared with the theoretical predictions, by using pole diagrams with nuclear vertex functions for three NN potentials: the Yamaguchi potential, the RSC potential and the potential in the quark-compound bag model. In the mass spectra of pn, pd and nd systems no evidence for the exhibition of two- and three-baryon resonances has been obtained.
